Well, isn't this just the bee's knees.

Hello, everyone. My name is Sarissa, and this is not how I thought my day was going to go.

You are taking this well. Hi, I am Lizzie.

I may or may not be secretly panicking.

Hello Lizzie. Have you been here long?

Only a little over a month. We are not usually in this time period.

That's what I've heard, which is just as well. I do like modern conveniences.

That said, I won't miss out on visiting some speakeasies while we're here.

Same, but the outfits are fun here.

The flapper dresses for sure.

I do like the flow and feel of the beads. They're heavy, though.

I travelled a lot. I suppose I recently came from Chicago. And you?

NYC most recently, but I'm originally from California.

NYC is exciting, but California is home, you know? I grew up there.

Bees don't have knees?

They do! Five of them, in fact. The joints connect the six segments of each of their legs, but of course that's not at all why this phrase was so popular in this era.

Huh. Maybe I'll learn that in school.

Someone else asked me that. I'm not sure. I wasn't in a typical school back home.

I was homeschooled my first few years too, so I understand.

Do you know what grade they'll put you in?

Me too. Sort of no other options.

High school. I think the first year, whatever that is.

I'm Torunn.

No? Might I ask why not?

Ah, high school. It's quite a change from homeschooling.

Torunn. What a lovely name.

I come from an apocalyptic world. My foster dad did his best for me and my brothers, but survival was most important.

Did you like real school better?

Thank you. Yours is too.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. It must've been difficult. I'm impressed your foster father was wise enough to prioritize education. Not everyone would.

I did. It was terribly lonely, being homeschooled. And despite the rather...challenging types of people that were in the schools, I had so much more company.

What was challenging about them?

There are bullies who could give you a hard time if they feel like you’re not like them, or if they could get away with it, or if it made them feel better about themselves, or if they fear you.

But there are also lovely people who are great fun to spend time with. Those are the ones I spent my time with, and I just ignored the rest.

If you have any problems at school, Torunn, and would like to talk to someone with that homeschool-to-public school experience, I’m happy to listen.

Yes, that's right. I should've said they have five on each leg.
