I see people speak of birthdays a lot here. They seem to mean a great deal but I've never had one.

Why not?

I'm an android. A prototype, so I don't know when I was made.

Really? Cool. Don't you have a date of when you were made?

No, I have no manufacturing date. My programming has been corrupted has been updated too often to know the original installation date.

Pick a day and make it your birthday. If you really want one.

I don't think I really understand the importance of the event? Isn't ageing generally seen as a bad thing for humans?

Ageing is going to happen whether we celebrate a birthday or not. So, why not celebrate living for another year?

That... is a really good point. Especially after so much danger in this world. Living another year is definitely worth celebrating.

Exactly. So, are you going to pick a day?

It seems strangely random. Maybe you should pick it?

It doesn't have to be. Maybe your bday is the day you figured yourself out or some other big event.

I'm not sure I'm ever going to figure myself out. It seems that another big event would be a celebration in and of itself?

I say close your eyes and point at a date then.

July 27th. The day I arrived in Goodland and the day my life started again. It seems appropriate.

I think celebrating a year in this would be quite an achievement.

I agree you should just pick a day. You'll never get a better "get out of jail free" card in your life.

[info]jericholeader

You use it as a way to commit crimes? I'm not sure I understand?

If it was up to me, it would be a completely legitimate legal defense but sadly I don't think any judge would agree.

But people will handwave all kinds of shit they wouldn't otherwise. You can show up late to work, say whatever you want to say, eat a blatantly obscene and unhealthy amount of sugar. Stuff that mildly to moderately violates social norms.

Promise me you won't attempt to prove the thesis? I would hate to be the cause of you spending time in jail.

So a birthday allows you behave in a way you otherwise wouldn't? Interesting. I hadn't considered that aspect before, though I doubt I'd take advantage of it.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]earsyrider
2019-10-19 01:09 am UTC (link)
Can't promise I'll never toe the legal line but I won't try to use my birthday as excuse.

Yeah, basically people will cut you more slack and be less quick to judge you because they don't want to ruin your special day. It's like a sacred thing. A day where self-indulgence isn't a sin and you get tons of free shit. People go out of their way to make you happy and don't expect anything in return.

The only downside is if you're weird about getting old or being the center of attention.

[info]jericholeader

That's about as good a promise as I'm getting, I can see. I'll take it.

I'm learning a lot about the way people think today. It seems strange to think that the day a child is born can affect the way they behave once a year for the rest of their lives.

I can see you're smarter than average.

It's not really the exact day that's important. Some people just need an excuse to take a day for themselves.

I have good programming.

It feels like a good excuse to take time out. A way to measure time, also, and what the year has meant.

Yeah, I guess you can get all sappy about it if you want to.

[info]jericholeader

Not anymore. I'm a person. I was programmed and my components are all mechanical but I became something else. I broke my orders and became free.

Sappy isn't always a bad thing. I came from a war-zone so time to reflect is a great gift.

I don't have a problem with sappy. My sister and my boyfriend can get pretty sappy.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]maguna

It can follow any basis you wish since it will be a day to celebrate you. It can be a date of importance, a significant date in your life, or just a date when you were happy.

Do you know the date you were given to Carl?

[info]jericholeader

I don't remember the day Carl took me home. I... think there was reprogramming.

Perhaps the day I came here?

...I'm sorry you can't remember that day, but since you can't I'm afraid you may be right. There might have been some reprogramming.

The day you came here would be a good choice,

Yes. No matter the kind of man he was, you should be grateful for your life...I know I am.

I have a lot to be grateful for.

So we put in a request with the entity for a cease in pranks and attempt to make the day memorable? Sounds good to me.

Speaking of celebrations. Good luck tomorrow.

I'm glad. It wouldn't be same without you.

You're gonna be fine. Just look out and your Mom and Dad will be there supporting you all the way too.

The bit where you throw your hat in the air or the bit where you have to be a grown-up. Make your way in the world and try to find a place in the world... cause I agree, that part is tough!

Have I ever told you that you have quite a way with words, Markus?

I don't know, I feel like I've been a "grown-up" for years now. I've planned out every single detail of my life since I was old enough to make to-do lists. It's the unknown part, the part where I have a good chunk of time between now and college. That is what is a little nerve-wracking. The not knowing.
