What is pumpkin spice, and why is it being put in coffee? Why is it being put in everything? Kids these days.

It's pumpkin pie spices. Cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves. Autumn in a latte.

Oh. That makes more sense than spiced pumpkin. Why is it autumn in a latte?

Cause pumpkins! And pumpkin pie! And it only comes out in autumn so it has trained us to have a Pavlovian response to the scent/taste of pumpkin spice. Even if it's still 70 degrees and green. But jokes on you, NYC. It's 70 degrees and green well into November where I'm from. I can down a PSL and put on Hocus Pocus in the middle of August no problemo.

I don't like pumpkin pie. Is the joke really on New York if you're still downing this PSL in August when they want you to start downing it?

I'm wounded. I wait all year for pumpkin spice season to herald the start of spooky season and clearly Starbucks just knew we were all so over this summer we needed it to come early. So yes.

What kind of pie do you like, though?

This has certainly been a summer. Do you want to start your spooky season tonight?

Key lime. You?

I may have already started planning out my October last week. But it does take me a month and a half to get everything in order. So... also yes.

I appreciate a good key lime. I can work with that. Personally I'm more of a cake person, but I like pecan, classic Dutch apple, and anything with merengue.

Does it Is this something that usually takes a lot of time to plan? How do you want to start it?

What kinds of cakes do you like?

I'd seriously debated doing anything at all for Halloween this year since the last two in a row have been a literal horrorshow, but then I figured that if I didn't it was like letting them win, y'know? So I gotta. And it's my favorite Holiday. It's where I come alive. So I'm going to make up for the last two years.

Movies tonight when I get home and maybe something a little more autumnal for dinner and more movies tomorrow night when I don't have to work after class?

Now you're asking the right questions! Tres leches, of course, rum cake, tiramisu, chocolate praline, German chocolate, and carrot. And I have a strong preference towards buttercream frosting.

A concentrated dose of Halloween to show them they didn't win. Any sneak peeks?

I like this plan. What would be considered more autumnal for dinner?

You're supposed to be the psychic one, not me. It's going to take me a minute longer than you to get to the appropriate dessert preference questions. I don't think we've even talked much about desserts. Is this the power of the pumpkin spice? And what about your preferences toward cupcakes and other sweet things?

Give me another week and I'll have some solid Halloween party ideas squared away. But I have two playlists, maybe a party, and between you and me I'm going to try to talk everyone in the building into decorating their hallways and handing out candy so the kids can trick or treat.

I have good transitional recipes for this odd in-between seasons time. Maple roasted cauliflower and wild rice and baked apple fries. How's that sound?

Pumpkin spice always makes a great conversation starter. People either love it or hate it. Though your dislike for pumpkin just forced me to dump half my seasonal recipes. I'm praying you still like apples. Because apples go in everything in fall. I think you will find that there are few things I don't like, though. Favorite cupcakes are strawberry or salted caramel. I love beignets and hamantaschen, apple and anise fritters, cheesecake, anything Oreo-flavored, anything coffee-flavored, and I prefer crullers to all other doughnuts. Also, apple cider doughnuts exist.

So what you're saying is HALLOWEEN: A Party By Audrey Jensen is happening? Is there someone you need to register this with? It almost seems like you've got to register these sorts of things so they don't overlap. I think that would be nice for the children. I don't know why people wouldn't want to participate in at least decorating the hall.

That sounds really good.

I'm really not sure what to make of it. It's certainly different. I'm not against all pumpkin. It just depends on how it's used. What were some of your recipes? I do like apples. That's quite the list. Why do I think this is just the tip of your sweet tooth?

I've got until October 1st to figure everything out but, yeah, I'll make some kind of announcement and it's not just my party. I'm not a party-throwing kinda person. That's more Brooke's department. So anyone who wants to come help with that is more than welcome to come help! But y'know, there are some killjoys around who might think it's dumb and not want to get into the festivities. Hopefully there are enough of us who do want to participate to make up for the ones who don't.

Then that's dinner for us!

I've got a pretty good pumpkin curry. And a lot of good soups and stews and things like that for when it's actually cold. But I can always replace the pumpkin with squash or sweet potatoes or regular potatoes. They're pretty versatile recipes.

As for my sweet tooth? It really doesn't have much of a limit.

Is it telling that my birthday is apparently the start of this Halloween season? If it isn't a party, what is it? If there are killjoys who do not want to celebrate, they can always stay inside or go elsewhere.

Wonderful.

I'e had Indian and Thai curries, and I've had currywurst, but I've never heard of pumpkin curry. I am both intrigued and uncertain. The same with soups and stews, though stews always seem like such a cold weather dish. I like squash and the potatoes. I also like zucchini.

Much of a limit? Where does your sweet tooth draw the line? Maybe that's a better question than what you do like.

A couple of you are pretty spooky. Mostly Allison. I wouldn't mess with her. So it makes sense. But yeah, anyone who doesn't want to come have fun can just not have fun somewhere else.

Pumpkin curry is just a Thai yellow curry with chunks of pumpkin instead of meat and then coconut milk. You can use basically anything in it. I like it with sweet potatoes too. And it's got a bit of a sweet flavor to balance out the spices. We'll have time to experiment, I think. And I like cooking for you - for all of you.

I don't like peanut butter. That's where the line is drawn. If peanut butter is involved, I'm out.

I wouldn't mess with either of my sisters, especially if they didn't know it was all in good fun. I'd pick them to be on my team. Rather them with me than against me and all that. I don't think they'd pick me first, but I don't blame them If there's anyone who doesn't want to have fun, hopefully they'll come to this same conclusion.

Oh, I see. If you made it for others, I'd be willing to try it and pick around the pumpkin if I didn't like it, but if you're only making it for us, I think I'd prefer to try it with the sweet potatoes, or possibly anything else. I know someone would eat it if it had the pumpkin, but I don't want to waste food or your time. I also like the idea of experimenting. I can't speak for the others, but I like when you cook for me. I know you don't have to, and I know I'm capable of feeding myself, but I do really appreciate it. Thank you.

In anything or just in sweets? I'll take your peanut butter infested food should you find yourself in the strange predicament where you've discovered it's been overridden with peanut butter.

I would punch anyone who messed with Vanya, honestly. Just straight knock them out. She deserves better than that. But for sure would not mess with either of them. I'd mess with Luther, though. I think I can take him. He looks big, but I bet he wouldn't swing back.

I can do it with sweet potatoes! It's hard to find fresh pumpkin without a really good farmer's market around and I don't know if there's going to be anything like that around here this fall. You're welcome, though. I like doing it. Especially for you. Even if you are perfectly capable of it. I'm perfectly capable of punching my way out of any fight, but if one comes along I'd still let you do it for me. Cause why not?

If there's a peanut sauce in something, I'm cool. There was a noodle place back home that did this Thai peanut noodle bowl thing with cucumber and green onions and chicken and it was amazing. But the idea of a Reeses Peanut Butter Cup makes me nauseous.

You punch them, and I'll snap I think Luther could take it from you. My money would be on you. I just think he'd be able to last longer than the average person. Definitely longer than I imagine Diego would last.

I thought I read something about a farmer's market, but I don't know the details. We can always keep an eye out for one and inspect the produce for anything that looks good, pumpkin or otherwise. Why especially me? I think you just want to see me in action. Get a little entertainment with dinner. Although, we could always tag team.

That sounds really good. I may have to look up recipes now. I might even cook for you. Reeses Peanut Butter Cups have a weird ratio, and I can't ever figure out if I want more or less peanut butter.

He's pretty bulky, I might not be able to floor him like I can most people, but I'll climb him and punch on him from the top down. :P I couldn't beat up on Diego, though. Have you seen that face? It's just too sweet. I couldn't make that face go all :(

Of course I want to see you in action. What's wrong with dinner and a show? But we should definitely see about this farmer's market.

I think I'd like you cooking for me. I mean, you've seen the kind of junk I eat so even if you start off with something basic, it's not like I won't love it. I live off of ramen, cereal, and Oreos most of the time. Most things are higher quality than that.

There's always the backs f the knees as well as jumping down on him. I have seen that face. I've also knocked him out. I have no problems making his face make that face, though I don't currently have a reason to.

Maybe one day you'll get to. I would say I could try sparring with someone for you to see, but I can't promise I could hold back. That isn't bragging. I'm broken. They took me apart, and they broke me. It's second nature. It's instinct. There's nothing wrong with dinner and a show. We could look into dinner and some kind of show. Movie. Play. Murder mystery. If we find a decent farmer's market, we could make it a whole day.

I'll try to find some recipes. Anything I should absolutely avoid besides peanut butter? Any allergies I should be aware of?

I don't know why the first thing I thought was "Why, is he ticklish?" You mean swiping the legs, though. I gotcha. I can spar with Diego just fine, though, but we have a strict "not in the face" policy.

Are you offering to take me on a date? First you want to cook for me, now you want to get all old-fashioned. I like it.

I don't eat pork. Not for any kosher reasons, because I still like shellfish, just that I was emotionally traumatized by a pig once. The smell of week-old rotting pig really puts you off of ever eating bacon again.

He could be, but I've never tried to find out. Sweeping the legs, though, yes. Now that I would like to see, though I don't know that he'd want me watching. That's a good policy to have.

Offering. Asking. As long as you like it. I might even go so far as to bring you a flower or two.

Rotting meat of any kind is an awful smell. So no pork. Got it. I'll stick with chicken if there's a meat in the dish. Chicken's pretty harmless and great for absorbing flavors.

Maybe next time you might come down and watch? I don't think he'd mind. And I certainly don't mind. Though finding time in my insane schedule to get a good workout in is more difficult than it looks.

I would love that. All of it.
