So I’d give this AU!New York a full three stars. ⭐⭐⭐

It seems pretty accurate and I had been meaning to come back to visit. It’s missing a few of the best pieces though like my favorite coffee shop, everyone who lives here in my preferred universe, and also the ability to leave. You should probably fix that part because it seriously ruins the whole effect when the background loops. Have you watched animations like that? They're awful. Wraparound backgrounds may save time and effort but they’re lazy and they suck. Hanna-Barbera? More like Hanna-Barfera.

The ostriches are really great, though. I tacked on half a point just for them so you’re in solid "I’m already logged into Amazon so might as well" territory. But there’s still a lot of room for improvement. Unless this all turns out to be the inside of a giant snow globe again. That's not fun, it's not funny, and I’ll take it all back.

You've been here before?

Yup. Or well. Not here-here.

But I lived in Greenwich Village for a while.

I see. I misunderstood and thought you'd been to this particular version of New York. I was told I have.

So either this polly pocket dimension is drawing from multiple universes or we get a mind wipe when we leave free of charge?

I'm not sure there's a way to be sure if either is true.

Are there people here from your home? Do they have the same memories as you? That’s a really good way to test things out. It’s not a sure thing because some AUs are like fanfiction.net obvious but others can be more subtle.

It’s a start, though.

Some do, but most are from an earlier point in time. I don't recall any of them disappearing previously.

So we’re kind of like a replicate of ourselves? That’s not promising for anyone noticing good to know.

How long have you been here?

That is how it seems.

One week as of tomorrow.

If you subscribe to infinite multiverse theory then it could just be creating a new timeline every time someone gets picked up. We didn't at home though, timelines only split if the changes were big enough. Going theory is that people just get put back with their memories wiped. The real way to test it is if someone died here, but that's impractical for obvious not-murdering-people reasons.

Yes, not murdering people would be...impractical.

Just saying. There are people back home who'd do it without a second thought.

You say that like you're slowly backing away trying not to make any sudden movements. Obviously. If I was willing to do anything even half that bad my career would have been a hell of a lot more successful than "that guy who hardly ever follows through on any of his ideas".

It’s probably a good thing Hal isn’t here because he’d kill himself to test it out.

Totes shouldn’t kill people just to test it out.

I promise I'm not a sociopath, I just come from a timeline full of them. Makes it easy to know how to think like one.

I believe you. It would probably be really helpful, though, if you kept the murder talk to a minimum around most people because it’s like a huge social taboo.

Especially when it revolves around human experimentation.

We've still got the Hippocratic Oath, anyway. Never even tested half my work in case someone used it as the basis of something more sinister.

Sometimes things are perfectly fine before we try to change them, and we destroy what was meant to be in the process.

Is it just me or does he sound like every villain from back home trying to justify how they're not a villain while they have a cop strung up by their ankles?
