While I'm not usually one to look a gift horse in the mouth, I'm a little confused by the sheer volume of paperwork I woke up to on my desk this morning.

Back in Lakewood, I had applied and been accepted to a couple of schools. I'd pretty much decided on NYU Tisch. Which is conveniently located right over there. But I still had a semester left to finish at GWHS. Do I test through that last semester of HS classes and start college classes or do I need to finish HS classes here? Does it not matter because of time travel and magic and all that jazz? Should I just throw my shit at Tisch and start signing up for classes?

I mean, I had already been talking to admissions because Peter and I had that conversation about it and I was going to do it anyhow and turns out they did still have all of my records on file and it was fine regardless.

I do have to say I'm really jazzed about the idea of being able to do this, though. Not that you need a college degree to be a filmmaker but at a certain point it's about honing your technique and making connections and networking and having access to equipment and technology that you wouldn't normally have as a lowly Vimeo videographer. And there is a very particular skill set that comes with documentary filmmaking. Journalistic ethics is kind of a big deal. And you do need credentials to gain access to certain places and people. Like the holy grail of true crime interviews.

AH. Yeah, that makes sense. Gotta get that muscle memory back, right?

Exactly. I mean, I wasn't that good as a kid, but I still have a lot to learn before I'd want to audition, you know? I foresee a lot of bloody toes and bruises this fall.

I have faith in you and your toes! I'll be there cheering you on the whole time.

Thanks Audrey. That won't make my toes feel better, but I'll still appreciate it.

Poor toes! Why must they suffer for art? We'll just have to schedule a lot of pedis to make up for it.

"Transcend the pain" - but in a Russian accent. That's half the battle.

It's a good one. I think it works for a lot of things in life.

My favorite has always been "the smoothest way is full of stones", which still doesn't completely make sense to me literally, but in terms of meaning, I get the message. I'm sure there's something lost in translation somewhere.

Yeah, but it doesn't always work for other things.

I get that, I think. Bleak but true.

Like when you burn the roof of your mouth on tacos? How could you play me like this, tacos?

Yeah, but life can be like that sometimes. You gotta go through some shit to get to the good stuff. So you have perspective for what the good stuff feels like.

Taco betrayal is kind of the worst.

I read something in a book a couple months ago, that sort of fits. I mean, it's about ballet but you can apply it to other stuff:

“It always feels like death. At least at first. Your muscles stretch and burn until they might rip. The bones in your hips threaten to rotate right out of their sockets. Your spine lengthens and twists into impossible shapes. The veins in your arms swell, blood pulsing through them. Your fingers tremble as you try to hold them taut but graceful, just so. Your toes jam into a pretty pink box, battering your feet with constellations of blisters and bruises. But it all looks effortless and beautiful. I hope. Because that's all that really matters.”

That's beautiful. Evocative and painful and beautiful. I love it when words can make such a perfectly clear image like that. And in the end, all that effort and pain, the struggle and sweat and blood and the cycle of failure and victory to make something beautiful. That really is what matters, no matter what it is.
