WHO: Klaus Mikaelson and Hope Mikaelson
WHERE: Grazie
WHEN: 5/20/20
WARNINGS: Klaus? Talk of death?
SPOILERS? For the Originals season 5 and Legacies, season 2

Klaus didn't like to admit it, but he knew he'd done wrong by Hope. How could he blame her for doing what he had done? Just because it had broken his heart to see her in that position - when all he'd ever wanted when he'd died was for her to be happy - didn't give him the right to blame her for it. She'd acted bravely, sacrificing herself for others. Truly, how could he blame her when he'd set the example in the first place?

But she was his daughter, and his thoughts and feelings concerning her weren't always logical. Still, he owed her an apology and the two of them needed to talk. He didn't want to be here feeling that she hated him. This was a gift and he wanted to enjoy whatever time this place gave him to be with her.

He'd arrived first, and compelled the host to give them the best seat in the house. It was more private, even if Hope could certainly cast a spell to give them all the privacy they needed. He ordered a drink for himself and a soda for her as he waited for her to arrive.

The recognition surprised Hope and she looked up at her dad from across the table, giving him a small nod and a smile. "Yea, the boy I danced with. There've been a few more dances since then, and one coming up when prom happens."

Maybe it wasn't her place to share, but she'd already let the cat out of the bag at this point. "He's a phoenix. Which was traumatizing to find out, but it's come in handy a few times." And it meant he was the only person who couldn't die on her. That they knew of.

If she'd been taking a drink at that moment, she likely would have started choking. "Really? I didn't expect that."

Klaus's smile twisted a little. "I didn't say I liked the man." They'd definitely had their differences in the past, and he was far from being Klaus's favorite person. "I'm just glad that you weren't alone." He was trying to think of Hope, not himself. It was easier than it was with almost anyone else, although he would have preferred almost anyone else become Hope's guardian. He didn't have that choice, though. He'd given up that when he'd killed himself to save her.

"A phoenix?" He looked at her, obviously a bit confused. He'd been around a thousand years and had never heard of one of those before. "And...you're going to prom with him." He looked down. It wasn't his place not to be okay with that, but it was hard to hold in his opinions. He was seriously trying to be good here, but it was getting harder with each breath.

"If you'd said that I would have started looking for the real you." It was very obvious there was no love lost between the two, even years after Klaus' death. "He... pushes me. Believes in me. And he's a good teacher. But, I mean, he's got his own kids and everyone else at the school..." He might have been the closest thing she had to a father, but that didn't mean he was her father.

"We don't really know how it works, either. He bursts into flame when he dies, and comes back after. He sometimes has fire-wings. And we like him," she finished firmly, catching the expression on his face. "He loves me—" far more than she deserved— "he's kind and determined. He'd do anything for me." All qualities she hoped Klaus could appreciate, too.

"In a thousand years, I've never heard of such a thing." He thought he knew all the monsters that were out there, but apparently he didn't. He didn't like that feeling.

"Yes, the twins." He knew them too. He also knew they wouldn't have helped without Caroline. Saltzman would have been glad to see him dead - he knew that. But Caroline was a different story all together. "He is...not my favorite person in the world." He wouldn't actually have minded killing the man. But if Salztman gave his daughter a home after he'd died, well...perhaps he could be grateful just this once.

"Do you...love him?" It was an awkward question, and he wasn't certain that he wanted the answer.

"That's Malivore for you. I've seen dragons and gargoyles and unicorns. There was a dryad, too, a cyclops... a gross giant spider." Among other things, which was why it had to be stopped. But she wasn't going there when dinner hadn't turned combative yet.

Instead of responding to his opinions on Dr. Saltzman, Hope gave her dad a look. Somehow Landon was the safer subject here. "I just went on about some of his good qualities for nothing. Yea, Dad, I love him. A lot, actually."

"Perhaps once I did know these things, and they've been erased from my mind." He frowned, hating that idea. Although he manipulated minds on a fairly regular basis, he hated the idea of having it used against him. He accepted the hypocrisy of that.

His eyes darkened a little as she confirmed what he was already fairly sure was the truth. Of course, she was a teenager, and perhaps her love meant very little. She'd move on from this boy and find someone who deserved her more. Or, he could hope, anyway.

"I suppose you want my promise that I won't hurt him."

"It's possible. That's how it works. That's why no one remembered me until Josie fixed all of that." Will remember her, she had to remind herself. The memories she'd gotten at the beginning of the month were starting to blend with the ones she had by her own merits.

His statement made her heart drop into her stomach, and she took some calming breaths. She could do this without getting overly emotional. "No, I wasn't thinking about forcing a promise like that from you. I was hoping I wouldn't have to, not after I just told you how I feel when he dies, and not considering that he hasn't even done anything worth being hurt over."

"I wasn't planning on killing him. He's just a boy." And, as she said, he hadn't done anything to deserve it, yet. That could change in the future but for now Hope's feelings were paramount in this regard. He wouldn't hurt the boy because it would hurt Hope. And that was something he hoped to stop doing entirely. "And I won't hurt him, either."

He might scare him, or try to have a talk with him, but he was Hope's, and apparently he made her happy, so anything more than that simply wasn't going to happen

Hope had some doubts that being young would stop her dad from killing anyone, but she kept those to herself. He wasn't going to hurt Landon, that was enough for her at this moment.

"That's settled, then. Now I just have to convince him he doesn't need to be scared of you or Elijah."

It wouldn't, of course, although Landon had more claims to his mercy than just being young. He apparently loved Klaus's daughter, and he couldn't blame him for that. He would just need to make sure that he always treated her well. If he didn't, well, they would certainly have something to talk about.

"Maybe it's good for him to be afraid," he said, a bit teasingly. "It will make him behave better."

She rolled her eyes, frustrated with this opinion he seemed to have formed based on absolutely nothing. "He behaves fine. And if he didn't, that would be my job to correct or whatever."

He couldn't deny that. Hope, he was sure, could take care of any man or boy who dared to treat her wrong. She was, after all, his daughter.

"Fair enough."

He looked at her for a long moment, a smile crossing his face, but then finally shook his head.

"You're everything I hoped you would be. Except happy."

Her heart squeezed almost painfully. Could he really mean it? Even now, what she wanted most was to be worth the lives that had been given for her survival. "Really?" The question slipped out before she even knew she was going to say anything, her brain racing to catch up.

"No one's happy all the time. And I have some really good days... My life can be hard, and there are things I regret, but I don't hate it."

"Of course," he said softly, as if that were a ridiculous question. "You're a brilliant, beautiful, powerful young lady. What more could I want?" Other than, of course, her happiness.

"We all have regrets." He certainly did, although he rarely spoke of them and rarely admitted them. "But what I did for you isn't one of them."

There were other people around, people eating their own dinners and having their own conversations. Hope knew it wasn't necessarily the place to start crying, out here in public, but by the time he was done talking, she couldn't help it. Fat, hot tears were rolling down her cheeks and she broke her silence only to gasp wetly for more air between quiet sobs. She'd had no idea how much she needed to hear those exact words from him.

There was worry in Klaus's eyes as she started crying, afraid that he'd said something wrong. He wasn't sure whether he should comfort her, or pretend that she wasn't crying at all, although that would be very hard to do.

"Did...did I say something wrong?"

"No," she forced out after a few minutes of trying, shaking her head before in the hopes that he wouldn't worry. "Was good." Her voice sounded strangled and alien in her own ears as her throat tried to close in on itself. "Needed that."

She was crying because she was happy, then? He smiled weakly, willing her to stop because he really wasn't good at crying girls, even his daughter.

"I hope that we can...have the time here that we weren't given back home. That I can be your father. If you'll let me, of course."

The catharsis of crying leeched into her, leaving her feeling suddenly very weak as her tears trailed off into sniffles. Grabbing her drink weakly, she was grateful for the straw so she didn't have to lift it.

"Like I said, I still need my dad. You're the only one I've got."

"So we can go about this together," he nodded. "I can...learn to be the father you need." He didn't need her to change at all. He already felt like she was everything he could want in a daughter.

He paused, a bit awkwardly. He wanted to do this right, but he'd never had an example of how to be a good father. But he'd try, harder than he'd tried at anything in his long life.

She managed to keep any hint of frustration out of her voice. He'd done it before, she believed he could do it again. "I just... need you to be here for me. You don't have to always agree with what I say or do, but you shouldn't make me feel like shit because of it." Of course, her mom had made her feel like shit for some of her decisions, but they'd been bad decisions. Her dad's morality on those things was a little looser. She'd leave those kinds of talks to her mom. Or Dr. Saltzman.

"I believe you can do it."
