WHO: Klaus Mikaelson and Hope Mikaelson
WHERE: Grazie
WHEN: 5/20/20
WARNINGS: Klaus? Talk of death?
SPOILERS? For the Originals season 5 and Legacies, season 2

Klaus didn't like to admit it, but he knew he'd done wrong by Hope. How could he blame her for doing what he had done? Just because it had broken his heart to see her in that position - when all he'd ever wanted when he'd died was for her to be happy - didn't give him the right to blame her for it. She'd acted bravely, sacrificing herself for others. Truly, how could he blame her when he'd set the example in the first place?

But she was his daughter, and his thoughts and feelings concerning her weren't always logical. Still, he owed her an apology and the two of them needed to talk. He didn't want to be here feeling that she hated him. This was a gift and he wanted to enjoy whatever time this place gave him to be with her.

He'd arrived first, and compelled the host to give them the best seat in the house. It was more private, even if Hope could certainly cast a spell to give them all the privacy they needed. He ordered a drink for himself and a soda for her as he waited for her to arrive.

He couldn't deny that. Hope, he was sure, could take care of any man or boy who dared to treat her wrong. She was, after all, his daughter.

"Fair enough."

He looked at her for a long moment, a smile crossing his face, but then finally shook his head.

"You're everything I hoped you would be. Except happy."

Her heart squeezed almost painfully. Could he really mean it? Even now, what she wanted most was to be worth the lives that had been given for her survival. "Really?" The question slipped out before she even knew she was going to say anything, her brain racing to catch up.

"No one's happy all the time. And I have some really good days... My life can be hard, and there are things I regret, but I don't hate it."

"Of course," he said softly, as if that were a ridiculous question. "You're a brilliant, beautiful, powerful young lady. What more could I want?" Other than, of course, her happiness.

"We all have regrets." He certainly did, although he rarely spoke of them and rarely admitted them. "But what I did for you isn't one of them."

There were other people around, people eating their own dinners and having their own conversations. Hope knew it wasn't necessarily the place to start crying, out here in public, but by the time he was done talking, she couldn't help it. Fat, hot tears were rolling down her cheeks and she broke her silence only to gasp wetly for more air between quiet sobs. She'd had no idea how much she needed to hear those exact words from him.

There was worry in Klaus's eyes as she started crying, afraid that he'd said something wrong. He wasn't sure whether he should comfort her, or pretend that she wasn't crying at all, although that would be very hard to do.

"Did...did I say something wrong?"

"No," she forced out after a few minutes of trying, shaking her head before in the hopes that he wouldn't worry. "Was good." Her voice sounded strangled and alien in her own ears as her throat tried to close in on itself. "Needed that."

She was crying because she was happy, then? He smiled weakly, willing her to stop because he really wasn't good at crying girls, even his daughter.

"I hope that we can...have the time here that we weren't given back home. That I can be your father. If you'll let me, of course."

The catharsis of crying leeched into her, leaving her feeling suddenly very weak as her tears trailed off into sniffles. Grabbing her drink weakly, she was grateful for the straw so she didn't have to lift it.

"Like I said, I still need my dad. You're the only one I've got."

"So we can go about this together," he nodded. "I can...learn to be the father you need." He didn't need her to change at all. He already felt like she was everything he could want in a daughter.

He paused, a bit awkwardly. He wanted to do this right, but he'd never had an example of how to be a good father. But he'd try, harder than he'd tried at anything in his long life.

She managed to keep any hint of frustration out of her voice. He'd done it before, she believed he could do it again. "I just... need you to be here for me. You don't have to always agree with what I say or do, but you shouldn't make me feel like shit because of it." Of course, her mom had made her feel like shit for some of her decisions, but they'd been bad decisions. Her dad's morality on those things was a little looser. She'd leave those kinds of talks to her mom. Or Dr. Saltzman.

"I believe you can do it."
