Who: Thor and Frigga
What: A royal reunion
Where: The children’s floor
When: Backdated to Wednesday Night
Spoilers: Endgame/Infinity War

Thor was so overjoyed to see his mother's words that he could almost feel the electricity rolling over his skin. His mother was here and it was something he never dared to dream of. Sure, he had thought it, idly, but he had never thought that it might happen.

But with the realization that she was here came the understanding that he had to tell her about everything. He knew that he could lie, he could hide his shame and failure, but to what end? Goodland had a way of making things come out, usually at inopportune times, and Thor didn’t want his mother to find out casually. He needed to be the one to prepare her, it was his duty as her eldest son.

But he was nervous. He knew how he felt about his inability to rule or protect his people--- he was not his father, and did not lead with the effortless grace his parents had. He felt like he stumbled, time and time again, and then to learn that he decided to leave them? That he never learned his lesson and decided to put himself before his people again? He trusted Valkyrie to protect them, to be the Ruler that New Asgard needed-- the one it truly deserved, but to know that he abandoned them again broke his heart.

He had been in the Kids area enough time to know where the guardian’s typically stayed. There was no hesitation, by the time he got to the door. He banged loudly, full of anxious energy and vast excitement. When his mother finally came to the door (mere moments felt like hours), a well of emotions hit him. Great Happiness. Deep sorrow. Guilt. Relief. He wrapped his mother in a tight hug, nearly lifting her off her feet.

“Mother.” He sighed, “It is so good to see you.”

She had known from the moment Tony Stark had told her her son was here that this would be an emotional moment. It didn't take a skilled and highly trained witch to figure that out. She was dead, her child had been through a great deal obviously, and she hurt for him.

But seeing that sweet face... Frigga could almost see the childlike features from when he was just a boy. Despite being plenty old enough to rule, in many ways he still was.

"My boy," she said softly, returning the tight embrace. She pulled back, touching his cheek lightly. "You're very different from last I saw you. Everyone is right, this place certainly is strange. Come in." Ushering him inside, she reached to take his hand in hers, guiding him to the small sitting area.

Thor hadn't even begun speaking, but from the moment his mother touched his face, he could feel the stinging of tears behind the eye that wasn't glass. He had to blink them away quickly, this was not the time for this. He took in the sight of her, as if his eyes had been betraying him thus far, and honestly smiled.

"Mother," he said again, as he moved with her. "I have... so much to tell you." He moved into the sitting area. There was the nervousness again. He would start with something light, "I have many people I would like for you to meet. Torunn, naturally. She is... an amazing girl. Fierce. Worthy of Asgard. And there is a mortal I am dating, Her name is Darcy, and she is beautiful and kind."

She watched him, as she so often had, listening not only with her ears but her eyes. And her other senses. Of course she had sensed her own passing coming. That was alright. She had died defending her people. And the universe, if the Aether was involved. That was important. But it did mean she had left this boy with no mother to scold him when he talked nonsense and to tease him regarding his apparent love life.

"If you weren't seeing a mortal, I wouldn't even know you. Though it seems another you finally listened to me and we'd the Lady Sif?" A smirk crossed her features and she fixed him with a 'look'. "I'm so looking forward to meeting the girl. And...apparently, my own daughter as well." That was one thing even her gifts hadn't shown her. Thor was the only child she had been blessed with, and Loki as her chosen son. The idea that not one but two little girls had come after was taking some time.

Thor couldn't help but smirk at his mothers teasing. She was right, not many women on Asgard had ever held Thor's attention for very long, but he seemed drawn to the people of Earth. He couldn't explain it, both as comrades and as loves, he had been pulled towards them in a way he couldn't describe.

"Angela was a surprise to me as well." He remembered the fear that had crossed his gut when he thought that Hela was the one who had arrived. "I hadn't known I had a sister for most of my life, and then suddenly I have two." There was a slightly pointed look when he said that, towards his mother.

"I have faced her." Thor said solemnly, bracing his shoulders for the things that he was about to say to her. He was not proud, and it shown on his face. "I was on Midgard, with Loki and father when his time came," He frowned then, "He had time only to tell us that he had locked her away, and that her power would only grow stronger on Asgard."

"She had destroyed my hammer, ruined Loki's attempt at trickery, and in haste Loki called for Heimdall, which unfortunately lead her to Asgard. She ... managed to send us to a place called Sakaar where we met up with a few people, who became instrumental in saving our people." He phrased that carefully, knowing that he was about to tell his mother that he had intentionally brought upon the end of days. "By the time we made it to Asgard, she had executed most of the Army that remained loyal to us... especially my friends. She was killing citizens. She was unstoppable.... So I caused Ragnarok."

He didn't look at his mother as he spoke, instead looking down at the floor, "Father had come to me. He told me that Asgard is a people, and not a place, so I destroyed the planet, and Hela with it. Our people got put on a ship... luckily Loki had gotten one big enough to house everyone... I suppose he knew we'd need it." He didn't always understand the gift shared between Loki and his mother, but knew that often times they simply knew things. "Mother, I'm sorry. Asgard no longer stands."

She didn't miss that look for an instant. It was his father's, for one. "Hela was not my story to tell, Thor, and you know that, I think. Your father was a very changed man by the time we were married. I'm not sure I could have loved a man so intent on war and domination." Loki had wanted to rule, yes, but never quite with the bloodthirst that Odin had once carried.

Her family was complicated.

She listened to the story he told, reaching to hold his hand firmly in hers. That man. That was the one she had seen in her final hours, the one she had been so sure hadn't been the boy she knew. He was old enough and strong enough to rule Asgard, but he was still so young by their terms.

"Odin was right, my boy. As long as the people of Asgard are alive, Asgard does still stand. Of course I would love to know our world was there and thriving, but you're alive and that will always be the most important thing to me."

Leaning in, she took his face in her hands, forcing him to look at her. "Ragnarok was prophecied. We don't scoff in the face of prophecy, love. While I wish it had never come to be, it had to. You did what you needed to do. You stopped her in a way your father never could."

Thor was thankful for her hand as he spoke, it reassured him of her love for him-- not that he had doubted that she would still love him, but he knew that she must be disappointed in what he had become. He had been disappointed. He had once been an undefeated warrior, a symbol of protection for their people… and now he had become their unintentional executioner.

“What I did was destroy our planet and kill my own blood.” Thor didn’t know Hela, but that didn’t stop him from wondering if she could be redeemed. Loki had. Loki had betrayed him time and time again, but Thor had shown him patience and Loki had become a better person for it. Thor regretted his actions, if only because he had not shown his sister the same kindness. She had been locked away and forgotten about for a millenia-- he was sure that that anger had been intensified for it. If he had known… if he had only tried harder...

He took a deep breath and muttered, “It gets worse.”

“Loki and I had decided to jointly lead our people… he was much better at strategic leadership than I was, but I was far more… admired than he.” He thought for a moment, his mother would be proud that they had finally begun to work as one, “But Thanos attacked our ship… Loki had taken something from the vaults of Asgard that he wanted.”

“The man killed Heimdall and Loki was I watched, bound… before he blew up the ship. Valkyrie had only enough time to load half the escape pods…” He cringed again. He remembered floating through space before meeting Quill and his group. He remembered wishing to wake up in Valhalla to see his brother and Heimdall again.

She felt tears prick at her eyes, but not for the reasons Thor thought she would. Yes, she was disappointed, but not in him. Never in him. Heimdall had been so treasured, so loyal to their family and the entirety of Asgard for so long. And Loki... How many times must she grieve her child? No mother should have to do so. She knew he had made horrible choices. Thor had once asked her if she regretted sharing her gifts with him and she'd said no and she still meant it, despite what he was able to do with them. She still loved him completely. Him not being born of herself and Odin had never made her love him less.

Frigga took a long, slow breath. She was a queen, a goddess, and most importantly, a mother. She had a duty to do at that moment. Her mourning could come later, when her son didn't desperately need her. "Hela...was complicated. Yes, you caused the end of her life, but you must remember you did not do so with your own hands. And she would never have been happy. She could have ruled all Nine Realms and still been an unhappy creature." Her stepdaughter was always going to be a difficult subject.

Thanos' name was familiar. One that had pricked at the back of her senses for far too long. "That was an attack even I could not have predicted, my child. The fact that any of our people survived is your doing. And...I suppose that of the Valkyrie as well." Frigga didn't hold quite the ill will towards the woman that Valkyrie thought she did. Honestly, she had no issues with her at all. The Valkyrie had been gone well before she'd taken her place at Odin's side. "My darling, you do know I don't blame you for any of this, don't you?"
