“Severus?” Remus queried from his corner of the settee.  “Have I done something to upset you?”

Severus sat turned away, his jaw clenched.

“Of course not, Lupin. What would make you think so?” he replied stiffly.

“You have said nothing nor looked at me since Bill left an hour ago.  Can you explain?  Does this have something to do with my inviting him to accompany us?”

Remus watched the spasmodic workings of the other man's throat.

“You may do as you please.  It is nothing to me.”

“I see…

“You do trust me, don’t you Severus?”

“As far as I can throw you, wolf.”

~~~~~~O~~~~~~
They had looked beautiful together, Bill and Remus...shoulders and hands nearly touching, bent over the desk, smoothing parchments.  Their hair, Gryffindor colors of red and gold.
Remus would mentor the younger man in the ways of the moon-sickness.  Severus would brew the Wolfsbane.
He could appreciate the rightness of it.  Two tawny men touched by the wolf.
He stood apart...ever the outsider, even in this, especially in this.  Soon he would be alone, completely alone.
“You do trust me, don’t you Severus?”
To break me, yes Remus, I trust you.
“As far as I can throw you, wolf.”
Comments
Ah, poor Severus. *weeps for his certainty that no one could stand by him* Well done.
Thanks! It makes the revelation that he can be loved all the sweeter, though.
Oh, very well done! *Cries* for Poor Severus' insecurity.
Thank you! Yes, we do torment the poor man, don't we?
