Severus should have been ecstatic. He’d told the world Remus Lupin was a werewolf, a slavering beast that haunted nightmares and ranged at the side of the darkest of wizards. He’d stood up to Dumbledore—finally—and lived to tell the tale. He’d even gotten a coveted invitation to Malfoy’s late winter ball where Death Eaters and their sympathizers had toasted him.

Instead, Severus looked at the right side of his bed, the cold, unrucked right side of his bed. He wondered where his intrepid lover was at that moment. He didn’t regret their ploy, but still…he was not ecstatic.

Remus stood at the edge of the Forbidden Forest, looking across the Black Lake, looking for Severus. When a dark shape rose up and flew—without a broom—across the façade of Gryffindor Tower, he knew Severus was all right.

While he wasn’t ecstatic, he was glad that Severus and Albus’ plan had worked. He might hate being identified as a werewolf, but he regretted leaving Severus alone again. They’d only been lovers for a few months, but it felt as if they’d been made for each other.

He looked forward to an ecstatic reunion when this was all over.
