It was a particularly difficult rune curse, one Severus knew would require more magical might than he currently possessed. There would be no more rare Spitting Hicorum from this cave until the protection set by another greedy brewer was dispelled.

He considered asking Weasley, then felt his gut twist at the very thought. Lupin had a modicum of Dark Arts knowledge and was less chatty. The werewolf could also be counted on to be accommodating. Severus might even get away with calling it a favour, rather than paying precious galleons as he would have been forced to do with Bill.


With Remus tucked into the curve of his body to maintain a smaller shield spell, Severus felt his stomach flip again -- or perhaps it was a flutter in his chest. Severus ignored the possibility as their enchantment synched, the energy warm and strong. The intricate curse began to flare with light, slowly burning.

Remus trembled, and Severus' body responded in-kind. Only years of Occlumency training allowed Severus to maintain focus until the last rune, Manwaz, burst into a cloud of embers. After, they remained standing together, breathing heavily. Severus imagined he could smell Remus' heat and then Remus looked up.
