“Don’t be ridiculous: everyone knows Damocles Belby invented it,” his lover replied coldly, remembering...

... an autumn afternoon among the birches and Lily, looking up from Belby’s column in Potions Monthly to say, “One day I’ll invent a potion to help werewolves stay calm at full moon. Sanguinaria might work as a base.”

At the beginning of fifth year Lupin was just another Potter groupie to Severus. ”Ambitious,” he’d replied, returning to his arithmancy homework.

She died too young.

“I invented it for Lily,” he admitted reluctantly before adding, “She was inventing it for you.”

Thanks! The Muse actually seeded this drabble as an image of a devastated, guilt-wracked Severus gazing blankly at the wreckage of Godric's Hollow and feeling not only the loss of Lily now but the loss of all that she could have been and done in the future. I couldn't fit that all in!
