that was so good. i loved the layers of the story, each new scene made me rethink the one before it. so brilliantly done. it must have taken so much work! rarely does a story make me appreciate the effort behind it, but i can really tell that you've gone to great lengths to make a complex and realistic piece here. thanks for the engrossing read!

This is so fabulous! Long and intense and detailed and surprising. Until Severus and Harry were talking about the fact, I had no idea that nobody else knew--or could know--Severus was there And even better I had no idea there was a secret being kept from me; the narrative didn't feel forced or skewed in any way, which is quite an accomplishment in a story that depends for so much of its impact on a secret.

But not all its impact. I'm pretty sure I would still have been on the edge of my seat even if *everybody* had known Snape was stuck in his rooms, because you made his--and Harry's--daily struggle so real, and so gripping, so hopeful and so desperate. I loved the interaction between them, how you could see the relationship develop through the flashbacks and the conversations and the day-to-day living. Severus' wavering between determination and resignation and despair was so painful, but so completely how I could see him reacting to the situation. Harry's final solution to the problem was perfectly in character, too--very Gryffindor, but more than that an exemplary portrayal of his loyalty to those he loves.

I really liked Minerva here (I have a soft spot for her, anyway), and Hermione and Ron, the way they kept trying--gently and firmly and lovingly--to get Harry to come out, to go on holiday, to live his life, and I *love* thinking about how they're going to react when they find out what was really going on all this time; beyond my joy for Harry and Severus themselves, that's part of what makes the ending so sweet. Mostly, though, I love it because there is so much *possibility* in it, so much hope and wide-open futurity--just the way their lives should have been in the aftermath of Voldemort, but even better now because they're together.

Wonderful!

What a terrific fic! I loved the way you both showed the slow development of their relationship at the same time as ratchetting up the tension and the mystery. I let out a huge sigh when they finally got free. Now I have to go and do all the things that didn't get done because I couldn't stop reading this fic. Great work, mon Capitan!

*Salutes*

Oh, wow, that was like, craaazy mind blowing!! I couldn't beLIEVE it--you totally had me thinking it was going to be a focus on agoraphobia and internal challenges re depression, etc...which I fully bought into and thought worked SO well with the separation anxiety prompt...and THEN! My goodness. It was like all this ancient castle magic and I was totally infuriated by that castle!! I couldn't beLIEVE it!!! You made it all so palpalable--I think it was the care with which you took in building it, from the beginning. I mean, you never rushed it, never let slip any anxiety about getting to the castle magic part, completely lulled me into a sense that I could see where things were going and what this story was about...you stunned me, you know. STUNNED me!

I really liked your gentler Severus; he was really convincing, alternately limp and razor sharp. The very definition of stir crazy. And Harry was so sweet. And Binns! Like everyone else except Severus, I never thought of him as a person, really...not until this fic! Wow, this sure is terrific. If I wore a hat, I would doff it. A fabulous fic by a fabulous captain. ♥

I am on the best team EVER! Look at this fic! DUDE!

I loved your use of flashbacks and the way you eventually had to break Harry and bring him down to the bottom before things could start looking up. so sad, but it totally worked. I also loved Harry's threat, Severus' Muggle quotes, the use of the organized/disorganized theory, Albus' portrait, and THE CASTLE!

(I may also have thought that Harry losing it and taking Severus against the settee was so very wrong/sexy/uncomfortable/hot/wow.)

I am just envisioning the sit-down Harry is going to have with his friends now, and the look on Hermione and Minerva's faces when they find out who he's really been 'drinking' with. :D

Masterful storytelling. *loves*

When I finished reading yesterday, IJ was down; hence the belated comment.

That was awesome! I love how your fic is like the curve of a pendulum, showing first the story of Snape's despair (and tricking the reader, wonderfully done, that) until the point is reached where Snape makes his decision and risks everything. And then it turns, shows what really is going on, Harry's growing despair and his decision to risk everything.

There are many wonderful moments in the second part. Your idea of the castle as a sentient being with the intellect (and emotional capacity) of a five-year-old is fabulous. I love how it releases Snape in a temper tantrum. I especially liked the role of Binns (I don't think I've ever read him in a leading role before), and the showdown in the Great Hall is perfect.

But I have to admit, I like the first part even more. Your Snape, always on the edge, is fascinating. He's like a bomb, threatening to explode every moment, and it's Harry's control that saves him again and again. It's a great touch that the reversal of roles in the bedroom is part of their coping strategy.

How ironic, he thought on the verge of sleep, all those years of begrudgingly protecting him, and now...now that I'd do it gladly, I can't. Ah well, something else to learn to let go of....

I think that was the moment when I fell in love with your Snape ...

I love the Alice references, Snape's tea cup that's waiting for Harry when he returns to the rabbit hole. When it was cold at the end, my heart missed a beat.

Anders' bloody fucking triangle You're completely awesome, you know that, mon Capitane. *hugs*

Wow. What an original plot line! The castle as nearly malevolent. I love it when someone comes up with something I haven't even thought of before. That was just great. I was dying to know what was going to happen for the whole thing. I felt so bad for Snape. And Harry, too. Well done.

omg, what a brilliant beautiful wonderful read! one of those stories where you can't stop once you've started. it's written so intense and incredible, the way both descend into madness and depression and their love for each other, harry's optimism and their failing to find a solution...!! what I also loved is that the punishment of the castle is reasonable, for severus did indeed abandon the castle even if it was for the greater good.
also, nice of you to give poor binns background and a star role.

You had me on tenterhooks from the start. I'm thinking how callous everyone was being about Severus, trying to force Harry to go on vacation. Then, I discover no one but Harry knows about Severus. Now I'm terrified that he'll be forced out leaving Severus alone. (!!)

I start off thinking it's plain agoraphobia with magical causes. Then, I discover that the wounds reopen and he bleeds out if he leaves his room. (!!!)

By the time the castle throws a fit and knocks Harry out, I'm hoping Severus has been released. But, you know, angry non-human entity with childish sense of things. . . Then, Binns says he's returned to the beginning. I'm picturing him bleeding out in the Shack.

I think they both needed a life outside the castle. I'm also thinking the reveal to Minerva and Harry's friends will be pretty interesting.

Great story!

Just in case you're wondering, this doesn't lose a thing on the fifth or sixth reading.

Excellent as usual. Such a unique situation, beautifully written, rich with details, a bit of hot smex and amusing banter working naturally alongside the tension and the growing desperation of the situation. Perfectly balanced and genius.

Wowie zowie. In your comments you said this story was 50% planning first, then writing. It SO shows--the way you set up the story to have us expect the typical things you see in Snarries--people not understanding their relationship, Severus not wanting to be with Harry's friends, etc., even up to Severus's antipathy for people turning into agoraphobia--all believable in a typical story. Then you started to pull the rug out, and with each reveal, the magnitude of the situation became more tragic. Then to find out that it was a punishment from the castle--brilliant!!

And that's just the plotting! The characterizations, dialogue and relationship between Harry and Severus were also fantastically well done. I loved them. Incredible job, and I can see why the quality of the stories in the Snarry Games is so high if you're at the helm, making sure of it. I love the worlds you create in all of your stories. Thank you for another fantastic one that will go in my top 5 favorite Joanwilder stories!!

It took me days to read this, but I finally finished! This was amazing. I loved your ideas that Snape was trapped in the castle as punishment -- one really does have to wonder what went on during that year of hell of Harry's would-be seventh year. And Severus was such a consummate spy that I had no trouble believing that he'd even fooled the castle. I also loved the genuinely caring relationship Severus and Harry had for each other. It made each bout of their depression, anger, despair, and even "good day" moments so much more poignant.

I'm so glad to see Harry managed to get the castle to free Severus at the end. Imagine the possibility ahead of them -- an actual future! :D

The afternoon sun of early May was hitting the high prismed windows just so, fragmenting shards of colored light across the painted tableau that stretched the length of the corridor wall, floor to ceiling.

What a gorgeous way to start a story. I was fascinated from beginning to end. I loved how you just jumped straight into the drama and let the plot unfold. And the ending was superb.

Actually, the whole thing was superb ;-)

I was confused by one point though. Harry couldn’t tell anyone about Severus but Minerva didn’t mind buying the whisky for Harry since she knew he wasn’t the only one drinking it. Who was she referring to?

This was such powerful story in both the telling and the characterizations. I loved that Binns was so intimately connected to the castle, and his relationship with Severus made me smile.

I really loved the incorporation of the school's motto, and how it had a deeper meaning. Very crafty of you!

Harry though... Harry blew me away. His optimism, Gryffindorish determination, and bravery in confronting the castle on Severus' behalf, the made my heart soar. I love a good, strong Harry who can handle Severus, push him that little bit further, and your Harry did all that while still being able to show how much he cared.

Brilliant job!
