Pressure - that tears a building down
Characters: Harry, Hermione, Leila, Crookshanks
Status: complete
"When is Da coming home?"
Hermione set down The Red Fairy Book. Leila had been subdued ever since they'd left Ron's house, and Hermione couldn't blame her. There hadn't been so much as a word or an owl from Ron, not one, not even to Leila.
"I don't know, darling." She'd done her best to act normal, but this was so direct that she couldn't pretend anymore. "He's - "
What could she say that a young child would understand? He's possessed by the spirit of an evil wizard who died before you were born was more than any little girl should have to know.
"He's sick, my love." She leaned over and wrapped her arms about her daughter. "He still loves you very, very much, but right now he has to be somewhere else until Dada and I find a way to make him better."
Leila sniffled, very loudly. Hermione conjured a tissue and held it to her nose until she blew. "Why is he sick? I want Da!"
"We don't know," said Hermione. She began to rock back and forth, Leila cradled against her as the child began to cry. "We just have to wait until he's better - sh, sh, it's all right, Dada and I are here, you're safe - "
Eventually Leila cried herself out and let Hermione tuck her into bed. Crookshanks immediately hopped up and settled himself beside her, purring loudly enough that it was a wonder the bed didn't shake. Leila snuggled against him, cheek pressed to his soft ginger fur, and relaxed into sleep despite herself.
Hermione gently ran her hands over her daughter's brilliant hair and kissed her softly on the top of the head. She stood, a bit unsteadily, and headed downstairs for a drink. How much longer could she say that they'd help Ron if they didn't even know where he was?
