Smiling and waving and looking so fine
Characters: Sirius, anyone at the Leaky Cauldron
Summary: Sirius sings

As he pulled out a leather vest that even James couldn't object to, Sirius smiled to himself. They had all been tired and vague when they woke, and had spent the day lazing about the house together, with James steadfastly pretending that nothing much had been said, and Lily looking alternately amused and anxious. When Gaius had finally come home from Hogwarts, Lily had drawn James off to the guest room -- Sirius thought to give him time alone with Gaius, but by that time it was almost time to go and get started on dressing for the show, and definitely too late to launch into a conversation about death.

The T-shirt and vest left his arms bare, so he cast his usual charm to highlight the tattoos on his right arm. Nothing happened. He didn't even feel a tingle. His mouth suddenly dry, Sirius tried again. It worked. Just a coincidence, he told himself. I was lazy with the wand motion. Nonetheless, he couldn't quite push down a feeling of dread.

He started the show with Bowie's Five Years. They might, perhaps, still be in danger, but their wasn't widespread perception of trouble; people should be able to take it as fiction. The charms, to his relief, all worked.

After that, he scanned the audience to see who was there, and then started into one of his own pieces -- Rumble -- with vigor, letting the guitar crash forward like a ship in a storm. He thought he'd made a change in theme until he got to the second verse

Tell me when the light is failing
I'll be the flame for your heart
Call iron bones from the mountains
When worlds would fall apart
Still doom, he realized, even as he dragged the bold chords down into a minor key and teased out the notes to shiver like unsteady ground.
Tell me when the light is burning
I'll save you from the scald
Give you shelter from the fire's storm
at the burning of the world

Won't you ask me
Won't you call me
Won't you tell me when you need me
Don't you know that I'm the one?
Lost from night to night
but shade shift shielding
at the fury of the sun
Still doom. And he wouldn't always be there, but then, no one was.

He switched into a little bit of teen angst with a bare-bones piece called Add It Up, and then went into Swamp, by the Talking Heads:
Now let me tell you a story
The Devil, he's got a plan
Bag of bones in his pocket
Get anything you want
Definitely in a rut, he thought, unable to keep from smiling around the words.
One time too many
To far to go
I-- We come to take you home
Oh well. He'd call Lily up on stage and make up for it. They had a couple of pieces ready, this week.

Hermione nearly choked on her pint at the thought of Leila singing "Suffragette City" for her grandparents. Then again, Molly had survived both the Twins and Percy, often at the same time, so one little girl would be almost normal.

"I think we've got another Gryffindor, love," she murmured, reaching for his hand. "She's even a redhead. Headmistress will think history is repeating itself."

Her hand in his, Ron signaled for the waiter with the other and ordered them pints, some juice for Leila and a basket of chips for them to nosh. "I've a feeling McGonagall might see another Weasley head her way and think it'll be time to retire. If Remus' oldest hasn't achieved that end by then."

"If she's smart, she'll hire extra staff. There are what, five so far?" Hermione ticked off the Snape/Lupin/Savage offspring on one hand. "Remus and Severus have three the last I heard, and then there's Tybalt and Severus' brother's twins. Can the school survive?"

She hadn't felt this good in months, this complete. "Look, she's bowing to him - looks like he's found another fan!" Hermione snuggled against Ron and watched as Leila clambered back into the booth and cautiously grasped her cup with both hands. "Careful now, darling - that's right, take it slowly, mustn't spill - "

Ron's arm draped lazily over Hermione's shoulders and his fingers toyed with a few loose tendrils of her hair. "If the twins didn't level the place, I reckon the Snape lot won't be able to. Not that I don't expect them, and our little princess here, to have a go at it."

He sat forward a little when Leila dribbled on her blouse and pulled his wand from his pocket to clear up the spill. His brow furrowed a bit when it didn't clear on the first attempt, but relaxed when the second worked fine. With his arms full of Hermione and the music thumping, it was no wonder his concentration was off.

"Love you," he whispered, leaning in to nuzzle at her neck and causing Leila to giggle at them.

"Love you, too," she murmured. She frowned slightly, then decided that Ron had been too distracted to cast properly. "Both of you."

She rolled her eyes as Leila giggled and pulled away slightly. "Half a mo'. I need to send Sirius a note." Fortunately she had a notebook and quill with her, and it only took a few seconds to write a note and send it winging toward the stage.

If you're taking dedications, I'd like hear to Fields of Gold - make it "to the three of us." Leila thinks you're wonderful!

Love,

Hermione

She smiled and waved at the stage as the paper headed toward Sirius. She hadn't had seen him or his brother in far too long, and she wondered where the time had gone.

Sirius smiled at the note -- Leila had already drawn his attention to the couple with her. He should stop by later, he thought, and offer to give her some stage training. Ron might turn interesting colors.

Fields of Gold was after his time, but he'd heard it in Muggle establishments, and trying to resolve the story of it had set it in his mind fairly quickly. He wasn't entirely sure that the man was supposed to be alive and around at the end -- there was that last "remember me". It was possible to turn that all sorts of ways, though, and when he looked at Hermione, with the love she had left and returned to, and the child she had taken as her own, it was easy to just make it contentment and a finding of home.

While he had picked out the tune, he had never charmed in the accompaniment for it, so he lightened his amp and prepared to go it alone.

"This is a request -- for a marvelous little girl and her parents of the heart."

Hermione sighed at the first notes of the song. Fields of Gold was one of her mother's favorite songs, and Hermione had come to love it, too. It made her think of the countryside and the fields surrounding the Burrow on a late summer day.

And now that she and Ron were together, and they had Leila -

"Want to have a picnic this weekend," she whispered in Ron's ear. "Just the two of us?"

Ron grinned while Leila swayed with the music and waved to Sirius, his heart warmed by the way he'd framed the dedication. Hermione's whisper in his ear distracted him and he turned more to face her.

Momentarily sidetracked by her request, he tried to remember anything he'd ever heard his female teammates say about picnics and swallowed a bit. "A picnic? You mean baskets and wine and cheese and reading poetry? That sort of thing?" His tone indicated he'd really rather not have much of the latter if it was all the same to her.

"What's wrong with a jug of wine, a loaf of bread, and thou?" Hermione teased. "We can skip the poetry and chase gnomes, or just explore. Whatever you like."

Her arms tightened about his neck. "As long as we're together, it's fine. I know a beautiful little town outside of Florence if you're up to a long-distance apparation. Wine, olive groves, warm sun - "

Ron didn't even try to hide the relief. "Nothing wrong with the wine, bread and you. It was the poetry readings I was a bit leery of. One of my teammates in Oz went on and on about this romantic picnic her bloke took her on, and there were readings involved. Love you as I do, that's not quite my thing." Grinning widely, he leaned in to peck her cheek and his hold on her tightened for a moment.

"I think it sounds perfect, love. Much as I love the peanut, we need some 'us' time, too, I think."

"We can drop her at the Burrow with Crookshanks and let them chase gnomes." Hermione laughed softly and gave Ron a light kiss on the cheek. "Or play dress-up with my cat. Would you believe he missed her?"

"Because Mum and Dad will hate every moment of that," Ron joked, already looking forward to their afternoon away.

"I thought for certain that Crookshanks' dislike of me would carry over to Leila, but in her typical fashion, she's won him straight over. Course, he'd still like to use me for a scratching post...," Ron trailed off with a grin and looked ready to duck at a second's notice.

There would be time to punish Ron later, after Leila was in bed. Hermione still gave him a mock-scowl and pantomimed dumping her pint over his head. "Only if you deserve it, love."

Leila was calmer now, lulled by the music, and Hermione pointed to her and mouthed thank you at Sirius. He really was in rare form tonight.
