No trouble like a friend that you can't refuse....
Characters: Sirius, Gaius, ghosts
Summary: A day at the fair
Sirius couldn't keep from frowning as Lily absently returned his wave from where she was floating near the door. Sometimes, he couldn't help but feel that he must have imagined their closeness when she was alive, but every time he sat down and thought about it, he was sure it had been real. Now, though, she hardly bothered to look at him. It was Harry that she floated after, Harry that she watched. She didn't pay any attention to James either, but unlike Sirius, he didn't seem to care -- or even to notice. Sirius frowned again. That wasn't right either. Lily's behavior he could attribute to being tied to the emotions of her death -- Harry was everything, okay -- but if that had happened to James, shouldn't he be fixated on Harry and Lily? Instead, he seemed to want to make up for lost opportunities to have fun.
On cue, James showed up, leaning nonchalantly against the wall, as if the ground wasn't three inches below his feet. "Nothing to do, Pads? That lounging around in leather is more effective where there are girls -- sorry, people to see it, you know."
"I'm waiting for Gaius, actually. There's a festival in Hogsmeade -- the Equinox Fair."
"Excellent! I'll come with you." James sighed. "All that food and drink and I can't have any ... I hate being a ghost."
Sirius was getting a headache. "Come with us? You don't even know Gaius. You disappear whenever he shows up!"
"I should though, shouldn't I? Say hello, see if he might be worth all this fuss...."
"We might want some privacy!"
"At a fair?" James laughed.
"You know what I mean!"
James looked away. "I won't haunt you the whole time, all right? I just think I'll need some help getting there. Every time I try to go down to Hogsmeade alone, I end up in the Forbidden Forest."
When he put it like that, Sirius couldn't refuse. He nodded jerkily. "Yeah. Oh -- I never told Remus you were back."
"Why not?"
"Just didn't get around to it, I guess. We don't talk much." Before James could wholeheartedly say how understandable that was, Sirius pushed on. "Trying to puzzle you out first, I think."
"What's to determine? I'm me; I'm here."
"Not all here."
James laughed and swept his arm through the stone wall. "Sadly, yeah."
That wasn't what Sirius had meant, but he the motion of the door opening caught his attention. Was it Gaius?
