I heard the news today, oh boy
Characters: Harry, Hermione, Lily
Status: complete
Haven Books was warm, and Hermione was glad. She'd gotten back from Italy the night before to a rapturous welcome from Leila ("Big Kitty" now kept watch over her bed), an hour of ritual shunning from Crookshanks, and weather that was cold enough to make her wonder why more people didn't go to Italy for the winter.
She'd also managed, barely, not to gape when Lily Potter turned out not to be a figment of Leila's imagination.
Something is off. She ordered a pot of hot tea and a plate of scones and seated herself by the window. The air felt different here, and not just because of the climate difference between Scotland and Tuscany. She'd nearly splinched herself apparating to Hogsmeade, and when was the last time she'd done that? And had she imagined it, or had there been a shadow on the wall where Mrs. Black's portrait had hung in Grimmauld Place?
I'll ask Jack when I go into work, or maybe tag Peony when she has a moment. If there's trouble brewing, I need to know.
She unfolded the Muggle newspaper she'd picked up near Ron's flat and started to read the opening headlines. Anti-war protests while the Americans rattled their sabers, the Cricket World Cup, John Lennon and Yoko Ono holding a bed-in for international peace in New York, an odd respiratory disease in China -
Hermione gasped and nearly dropped her teacup. "What?"
ROCK STAR RETURNS FROM THE GRAVE, GOES STRAIGHT TO BED
NEW YORK - Former Beatle John Lennon stunned fans, paparazzi, and his wife, Yoko Ono, by returning without warning to his old haunts in New York City. He was first spotted outside the Dakota, scene of his assassination, then reported in several clubs and galleries as he searched for his wife and son, Sean.
The words made no sense. Hermione read them over and over, tea and breakfast forgotten. Reunion...identification...pending DNA results...bed-in to last until Bush Administration pledges itself to non-violence...
First Lily and James Potter. Which almost made sense, since they were magic, and their son was a force of nature. But a Muggle? Who'd been dead for over twenty years?
She made a face at her cold tea and murmured a warming charm on her cup. The liquid burped slightly and began to steam, and she drank more to fortify herself than anything else.
Breakfast with Harry was going to be much more than catching up today.
