WHO: Sirius Black and Janet Van Dyne (avac)
WHAT: Partner Thread! Adventuring in the unknown
WHERE: Starting at the House of Dimensional Doors
WHEN: March 11
RATING: Lowish. Some sad thoughts.

Sirius — was not having a great go of it the last few weeks. He’d be the first to admit it. Things were weird here in this place and there was a lot to process. Most of it was stuff that Sirius had yet to see, but had been told about. He did not question the validity of Remus’ story in that it had happened. But he didn’t believe it was how things had really gone down, either. Still, it had slowed down his cheer exponentially and it was difficult getting back to right in a place like this: mostly empty and filled with more people he didn’t know than he was used to.

Usually when he was feeling down, he’d search out Remus and demand attention, but now— well, now didn’t seem like a good time for that. Not with all the — well. All that.

It was too heavy.

So for now, he sat inside of the House. The weird one. He was camped out in the middle of the main room, right past the entrance, his legs tucked up underneath him. He had his wand out and he was lazily flicking it at a door, which was opening and closing at his will to reveal a hundred possibilities in front of him.

It was that easy, opening up a new avenue of life and then closing it off again, possibly lost for forever.

Sirius felt very small in comparison, which was something he’d never really felt before. Not like this, anyway.

Starting something new seemed like a grand idea to Sirius. No point in bringing home old cheese, was there? Surely new cheese was better. Even of the aged variety. "Why would we lug it?" He asked, vaguely amused at the idea of ever having to lift something with his back and knees. He wiggled his wand in her direction, although it did rather occur to him that maybe she didn't know what he was about.

Actually, no. She made it very clear she didn't know what he was about. Well! He'd just sort of assumed! "I am a wizard!" He proclaimed, lifting his chin proudly. "I'm a very good wizard, in fact." She was taking it pretty well, he thought. Excitement was always better than fear. Sirius was not especially interested in being burned at the stake.

Jan's jaw dropped as he confirmed his status, her eyes traveling from his wand to his face. "THAT'S THE COOLEST THING I'VE EVER HEARD!" She jumped in the air, her form shrinking as she did a loop-de-loop in the air, coming back down for a landing and growing to her usual size. "What kind of things can do you? When you say you're a very good wizard, do you mean good guys vs. bad guys or like, a really powerful wizard?" In her excitement, she hadn't realized she had done her own trick that might have sparked his interest.

That, however, didn't mean the other people on the streets hadn't seen it. At first, she didn't hear the whispers that seemed to circle them or see the phones as they were pulled out and videotaping their discussion. It wasn't until the whispers turned into a murmur that she looked around, her eyes growing slightly.

"Oops." She glanced at Sirius and gave him a sheepish smile. "Sorry, I was so excited! We should probably go somewhere else before this spreads."

Oh yes! Her excitement was nearly enough for Sirius to shed away his own problems for the time being. She was infectiously gleeful about it, it seemed. Particularly if her little size trick had a say in anything. He wondered if she was perhaps some kind of fairy hybrid? He didn't want to imagine that mating scene between her parents, but maybe there were stranger things?

"I--" but then he looked around, a little surprised by all the attention they were getting. It was against the rules of his own land, calling so much attention to himself in front of people who did not use magic. Apparently, it was not so for her. Still, the last thing they needed was a riot. So he grinned, took hold of her elbow and apparated --- they landed in an alley some few blocks away, and he didn't really give her time to breathe before he turned on his heel and walked in the opposite direction toward the street, meaning to duck into the next available store.

"I'm a good person and a powerful wizard," he said, answering her previous question. "What kind are you?"

Jan wasn't really sure what had just happened, but she knew she felt a little woozy afterwards. She doubled over, clutching her stomach, glancing up as Sirius started to walk away. "Wai-whoa." She put a hand out and grabbed him before he got too far ahead. "What was that??" She closed her eyes, wanting to make the pavement in front of her stop moving.

A minute later, she sighed and opened her eyes, giving him a recovered smile. "Sorry, better...but really!" She glanced around her, realizing they were in a completely different place. "Whoa." Powerful indeed! Her smile only grew with excitement as she started to wrap her head around what had just happened. "You're awesome!!" She stood up a little straighter, nodding her head that she was ready to move forward.

"I'm a good person and a powerful superhero!" She shrunk again and rested herself on his shoulder. He could do the heavy lifting after what he put her through. "What other kinds of things can you do??"

Oh right. Sirius had forgotten that first time riders of apparation tended to get a bit sick. He bit his lip and waited until she looked like she was over the idea of spiffing biscuits before moving on ahead. Whoops. Still, he'd saved them from impending doom, or maybe just a lot of strange attention to he didn't much plan on apologizing.

"Aparation," he said, like it was obvious. "Some people might call it teleportation, I think." Like a muggle science fiction term, maybe. He thought he'd heard that before somewhere.

"A superhero?" He asked, peering around the street curiously. "Of what? And -- most a lot of things, I can do." It was hard to narrow down something like magic since it was just a part of his every day life, if he had to be honest.

"So...you can literally do ANYTHING?" Jan's voice seemed normal enough as she was sitting close to his ear. "Wow...you really are a powerful wizard!" She glanced at him, poking him in the cheek. "But I'm guessing you can't appar..rate?" She looked at him to see if she was saying it right. "From Starklandia?" That seemed a stupid question to ask since if he had the ability, he wouldn't still be here...right? At least Jan assumed if anyone would have found a way out, they would have taken it. And then there wouldn't have been an exciting adventure in store for the two of them.

Jan grew back to her full size as they turned a corner, none of the bystanders from earlier in sight. "Superhero of the people?" She shrugged. "Whenever the world's about to end, my friends and I dive in and save the day!" She said it with a bit of smugness in her voice, but she was genuine in her feelings. Her friends were the best and they could conquer the world if they wanted. But instead, they decided to protect it.

"Let's check this place out!" Jan grabbed his hand and pulled him into a promising looking store. It had displays like a department store. If there was one activity that would test their newfound friendship, shopping was definitely the one.

"How many people do you think are in town?" Really, they should buy more than what they needed so new arrivals wouldn't have to put up with the lame change of clothes the town provided.

She was so small on his shoulder, he couldn't help but think that she might just be a fairy for real. But fairies weren't so clever, and didn't get big again, so. Probably not.

"Apparating is more short distance stuff," Sirius admitted. Not too short, but he was pretty positive he wasn't getting to another country, let alone another world. So. Yeah, no, he couldn't do that.

"Sounds like you've got good friends," Sirius said, sounding suddenly sullen and sad. Because -- it reminded him of his own. He and James had been ready take on anything, once upon a time. Now he was dead, apparently. Right along with Lily and Peter. And Sirius wasn't really -- he hadn't been able to figure out how to cope with that yet. Maybe he never would.

He glanced over his shoulder then, watching the people on the streets watch them even as they stepped into the store. Weird looks, he thought. Too open. Too interested. And these weren't the same ones as from a few blocks before, either.

"What?" He asked, not having been paying attention. "Oh. Dunno. Twenty or sommat?"

"Hmmm...twentyish...yeah, that should work! What if we picked out fifty pairs of clothing and bring it back for everyone? We could get like...various sizes and if they don't quite fit, I'll tailor it for people!" This was perfect! "If only I had my shrink discs...it'd make it a lot easier to get more stuff out without the baggage of...well, the bags!" She giggled, looking over at Sirius. He seemed to be looking at something else and she turned her attention to what he was looking at.

The people. While they weren't the ones at their first location, they were openly staring at them, a few pulling their phones out to...take pictures? Videos? At least that's what Jan assumed. "What are they doing?" she muttered, glancing from them to Sirius. "We didn't do anything weird just now, did we?" She went back through. No, she had grown larger before they had come into any populated area. And she was sure Sirius hadn't done anything wizardy.

"Maybe we're trending?" She pulled her phone out, but it seemed like they didn't get service in whatever world they were in. Weird. "Maybe we should just make this a quick shopping trip!" She grabbed a bunch of baskets, handing some to Sirius, before scooping stacks of tees and jeans into them.

Jan's generosity, just the way that she thought of the whole group before just herself really said something about her that even proclamations of being a superhero had not. She cared. She wanted everyone to be good, and not just herself. Sirius wondered if he was that good, if he would have considered doing the same if left to his own devices. He wasn't sure.

"Shrink disks?" He asked, but then waved the idea away. "I've got a spell for that. One bag total. It'll be light, too." And great, she was grabbing things up left and right for the baskets and he added a few things to it, too, because apparently weird cardigans were still a thing and Remus would like those, he figured. The store was weird, but he found a pair of sunglasses for himself too, putting them on his face with the tags still intact.

It didn't stop him from keeping an eye on the people who were still around, keeping a distance but not enough of one to not make the hair on the back of his neck raise in warning. They weren't menacing but they were -- imposing, somewhat? Sirius could not describe how. "This...might have to be a free items day," he said softly.

"I know, I know," she said, waving a hand at him. "They need a better name. I'm working on it." But it was the best descriptor for them. She could just toss them on whatever, press a button, and the item would shrink to whatever size was convenient! Made shopping a whole lot easier!

But then he was talking about a spell and Jan should have figured that he'd be able to help in that department. She giggled as they just started tossing every kind of garment and clothing item into their baskets. She tried to choose a variety of things, but figured people couldn't be TOO picky; they were trying to give some variety to their choices!

"Tres chic," she commented with a nod when she spotted him with the sunglasses on. She walked over to join him, trying on a pair and making a face. "What do you think?" she asked, turning to look at him, her hands held out to either side in an indifferent expression.

His comment made her pause and she shook her head. "I have money!" There was a reason she had made a pocket on her suit especially for this reason. Well, you never knew when you might need something while on the job! She knew she was always famished after a fight, so she had to make sure she'd have the funds to pay for it! She unzipped an untraceable pocket on her hip, pulling out her AmEx Black Card. "Anything else you wanna get before we blow this popsicle joint?" Which the sooner, the better. The crowd that had been staring at them before had increased in number and they were just...well, standing there. Jan felt like an animal in a cage, all of them waiting for something to happen before they acted.

"Do you think if we just make slow movements, they won't do anything?" she muttered back, hoping she didn't have to fight for the clothes she wanted to get.

But she would.

Eventually Sirius would want to see these shrink disks in action, but it was becoming steadily clear between them throwing things in baskets and trying on sunglasses (which were, in fact, tres chic) that maybe, just maybe, they didn't have time for extra play.

He'd have to ask later. Just like he was pretty sure they ought to be just dipping and weaving out of this place instead of worrying about paying with mysterious black cards. Or any money in general. "Keep the glasses," he said -- because even now they had a little time for fashion and they were really cute.

"But maybe -- ah. No. I don't know. Have they gotten closer?" He asked, glancing around them. They were nearly surrounded now, a circle about them. "I don't think how we move matters." And he wasn't quite sure he wanted to see how some defensive magic would make the crowds react either. "Hang on to your stuff tight," he decided, grabbing onto her elbow. "And maybe clench your stomach this time." Hey, at least he'd warned her this go around.

Jan was about to argue about stealing and how a superhero would never steal until she looked up and saw the group that was beginning to congregate around them. They weren't menacing, but there was still something about their stare that made her feel uncomfortable; it was like they were waiting for them to make the first move before they pounced. She thought Sirius had the right idea to get out before that could happen. She grabbed his arm, wondering how she could clench her stomach, but just glanced at him with a nod to show she was ready.

And there they went.

They arrived at their original starting point, Jan keeping her eyes closed as she tried to reorientate herself. At least she had been warned and was able to mentally prepare herself; physically, she wasn't so sure. At least she didn't feel like she was going to hurl as badly this time.

"Are there people here?" she asked, her eyes still closed. "And if not, what are the chances you can teleport us through the door?"

Stealing wasn't great, but Sirius liked the idea of it a hell of a lot better than -- than. Whatever this was, that was about to be happening. He got the impression that either of them being trapped inside a circle of thise people, or in an alleyway wasn't tremendously great.

Mostly because he didn't know what their deal was at all. It wasn't a good feeling, that curious and slight dread. Not a good feeling at all.

He considered the question even as he muttered a few words and all Jan's items, baskets and all shrunk down to very small things so that they might fit all into one instead of being many. It'd be easier to carry that way -- certainly easier to run. "No. Not through it. I can't -- it's like a different kind of magic, you know? It could mess up and go all kinds of pear shaped. But I can do it again so we're closer to it. Next to it? Can your stomach handle that?"

Jan dared to open one eye to peek through, noticing she didn't feel as dizzy as before. But she also saw the group of people who were already noticing them and making their way over. Except this time, they were running.

Both eyes popped open and she tugged on Sirius' shirt, pointing at them. "Yes! Yes, gogogogogogo!" She closed her eyes again, maybe squeezing him a little too tightly as she waited for him to do the thing one more time. While the speed and distance were efficient, she really didn't prefer the feeling like she was being pulled inside out by her bellybutton.

Still, it was better that they arrived closer to the door, close enough that they could run through and shut the door, safe on the other side. Jan panted, but otherwise, wasn't any worse for wear. She looked over at her new friend (because how could you not have a new one after that ordeal?) and grinned.

"You're pretty awesome, you know that?" She held her fist up for a bump from him. "I think we make a great team!"
