Who: Nebula and Gamora
What: Sisters
Where: Another late night angst run turned rescue
When: Late Thursday/Early Friday

It had taken time, but Nebula had allowed herself to believe that she was no longer on Paramater and that Tony Stark was indeed alive, the how of it all had not yet illuminated itself but she would find the answers. Until then she followed Stark through the door he'd entered the world they had found themselves on and back into the land where he was now living.

She did not understand any of it, not how she had been transported nor how he had found her, or this world where he now lived. And despite being offered a place to sleep Nebula had found herself out on the street.

The night air was still, and the local network quiet in a way she was not used to of places where people lived, there was so little there on the network to connect to, none of the vivid and vibrant things she might normally find on other planets and in other worlds. Here there was only the communications the residents choose to share with one another. And none were all that interesting or worth her time exploring.

Nebula was on her way back to the house they had come through, if she had entered that way then surely she could leave it that way too, back through the door and returned to Paramater and to the current mission, not here where she would be no good at all to the Guardians or Gamora.

What had begun as an idle walk, became one full of purpose when she decided that the way in must be the way out too and she made her round back toward the house when she stopped there ahead of her in the street was someone she would recognize in the middle of the night, in the middle of a haze, in the brightest light. It was another impossibility, she could not be here, it was too convenient, too much to hope for. And yet, "Gamora?"

It was a lot to try to absorb, that things were different, that she was different. These people, Nabula and The Guardians, the person they knew was a stranger to Gamora and she was hesitant to get too close to her sister because she expected her to lash out. They hadn't been able to stand together since they'd been so small, since Nebula had been more girl than machine and Gamora still had her guard up.

Her lips pressed together as Nebula told her about the universe pulling people from where they belonged and she felt guilt then, because she'd stayed, had that been what had done this? Gamora didn't belong and perhaps it had been her fault that they were here. But none of that played out on her face, blank as she made her way around the small square, listening carefully.

But it was all silent.

"It's so quiet," she said softly. Gamora was used to the hum of a ship, the bright lights of a planet. This? It was so quiet it was deafening. "Why were you looking for me? To make me go back?" Gamora questioned, harder now, more guarded.

It was quiet, Nebula didn't like it, it was a kind of quiet that wasn't natural for all that they lacked technology in this place, there was a network but it was small, there was no chatter for her to find, no conversations to stumble upon nothing out there but the few that had been dragged to this place. And she did not like it, even if it meant that she got Tony again, that she'd found her sister, there was too much about this place that they did not understand and she would not feel at ease until they did.

"Yes." She agreed, because it was all she could say to that, it was, it was the first thing she'd noticed when she'd found Tony too, the way the city around her had grown quiet until there was nothing but the two of them.

Nebula tipped her head to one side when her sister asked why she was looking for her, not anger in her tone but something unsure, it was odd being on this side of things with her now. It had been the other way for so long that Nebula had forgotten there had been a time when they had only ever been at odds with one another. No hope in Gamora that they might actually be friends one day, too twisted and turned by their father into the monsters that he desired them to be.

"I never got the chance to tell you what happened to you." She said instead of answering her immediate question. The loss she had suffered of her sister hurt more than the loss of Thanos, more than the death of Stark or anyone else. Nebula had been the first family she'd had since her own had been killed and that had been taken from her first by the years of training and torture of Thanos and then once more when he used her to get the soul stone. Gamora was no fool though, she would have an idea of what her fate had been.

"I lost you once. I do not plan on losing you a second time." Wherever in the galaxy she might go, wherever she ran Nebula would follow until they managed to find their way back to what they had had just briefly.

Oh Gamora knew just how Thanos had got the soul stone, what he must have done to her. The only thing that surprised her was that there was love enough in his heart to ever come to posses it, that he truly cared for her to result in earning anything. There had been a time she wanted nothing more than to please him, a time where she'd protected herself by doing as he asked and besting her sister time and time again to grow to be his favourite. But that had been a scared little girl looking for the man who'd taken everything from her not to turn his viciousness on her, it had been self preservation.

"I know that I was traded for what he wanted most," Gamora said with a shrug as she returned to being in front of Nebula having done another lap of the strange area. "That I didn't take my own life in time."

This Nebula was so much a stranger to her, yet at the same time like a glimpse of the past. The hate that she expected there wasn't and it threw her, because what remained was just her sister. In the quiet the other woman was softly spoken and it brought Gamora closer, even if she was still skittish. Their father was dead and honestly she didn't know the first thing about being a family, not really and here Nebula was, had been searching for her.

Gamora hesitated before she held out her hand to her, curious more than anything if she might take it.

"You know he'd have never allowed that." Nebula said shaking her head, that any of them had found their way free of his influence, with Gamora he'd have never allowed his favorite child to end her life before she could finish being of use to him.

"I tried to end him before he had the chance to find the stones." She confessed, "I nearly had him." The memory still clear in her mind, like every memory she had since Thanos had begun upgrading her. It hadn't been enough though, she had not been able to save her sister, and Gamora - she had given herself for Nebula. Told him where he could find the soul stone if only he'd stop torturing Nebula.

"You could have kept the location from him." Nebula told her, in that same quiet tone, letting Gamora approach her further. "You could have stood by and watch him take me apart piece by piece and kept the universe safe from him." She extended a hand toward her sister, but didn't touch her yet, leaving the final step to Gamora. She didn't need to tell Gamora that she hadn't done that of course, she knew what had become of her in enough detail to know that Thanos had found the stone, and it was because she had told him where to find it - to save her sister.

"You are-" She started and stopped unaccustomed to the intensity of emotion she felt for her sister, for the first time they were free of Thanos and they could simply be sisters again. "You saved me."

Gamora had watched everything unfold on earth and knew it was because she hadn't been able to stop him. She couldn't understand how he'd got the soul stone, but now she knew. There were some things she wasn't willing to sacrifice, Nebula had suffered so much at his hands, before of her. Obviously it had been too much, her sister's pain after a lifetime of abuse.

As little girls she remembered holding hands, playing games and sharing secrets. But that was so long ago, to see her reach out for her, it reminded her of that innocence. Part of her was still unsure, this could all be some kind of trick and that was why she hesitated. But after a beat Gamora took her hand and something in her settled, the fear and the itch to run from it all.

"You are my sister," Gamora said as she squeezed her hand. "I should have a long time ago."

Gamora hadn't felt real, not seeing her in the past not seeing here once more in the present, and not here on the streets of this town, not until this moment. When her sister's hand found its way to hers. Nebula squeezed gently, just to feel her just a little bit more, to remind herself that she was real and here and this wasn't just some game being played since she'd followed Tony back through the door he'd come from.

Her sister had always been the one to hug, Nebula had never known what to do with it. It still wasn't a gesture she had a great deal of experience with but she knew enough of it to know that in this moment it was what she wanted. Closing the remaining distance between them she continued to hold Gamora's hand and with her free hand wrapped it around her sister drawing her close.

"We did not get the time we should have." She admitted after a moment, drawing back once more, she did not linger in it the way she saw humans do, that they had done it was enough. "Before."

"This place is not ideal," It was lacking a great deal of things that Nebula would have called necessities, "But we can have time here." She didn't know what waited for them on the other side of this, but while they were here - they could have this time.

It was surprising and she tensed a little as Nebula got closer, like maybe it was a trick after all. She hadn't hugged her since they'd been little, a lifetime ago. But she knew it was her, it felt like her, a little awkward and unsure but happening. Gamora wrapped her arm around Nebula's neck and held her for a moment and her eyes closed and she breathed in slowly.

They pulled away and it sounded like a trap, but Nebula was so sincere and Gamora wanted so badly to believe it. "We never have," she agreed quietly.

Here, that reminded Gamora that they were in this strange place and she looked around again. "We can't leave?" That was clear because if Nebula had been looking for her and stopped it was because she couldn't continue. "And there are others?"

It was a first step, in all of this, in getting Gamora back. This hug. It was a gesture though, something that was new for Gamora, the shift in their positions was strange, it was not something she had ever expected, and yet now here she was and she would not let this slip through her fingers.

She could have stayed with Gamora once, it would have meant staying with the Guardians too, something she had not yet been prepared for. And she had turned down the offer when it had been extended to her. And she wondered now if maybe it was something she should have done, if she could have spared them both this or if it would have happened the way it had regardless. The variables were too great, no matter how many times she ran them through her mind she never came out with a satisfactory answer.

To wonder was a ridiculous waste of her time. All she had was the truth of what they had done.

"Not yet." There would be an answer to this, Nebula knew, they would find a way out in time. But for now they were stuck here. She trusted Tony when he told her they were stuck, just as she trusted that he would no doubt be part of finding the answer and the way back to their lives.

"Yes." She nodded. "There are others. People I knew. Some I have never met. All trapped here as well."

She couldn't remember the last time that Nebula had extended any kind of physical affection, any affection at all really. Not that Gamora could blame her. Things between them had changed, they weren't little girls anymore, but she still wanted a relationship with his sister far closer than they'd ever had. Thanos had come between them, used them against each other and Gamora wanted to repair that damage and to see this Nebula did too was almost unbelievable.

The hug was short, but treasured and she wouldn't forget it in a hurry.

If they were stuck it meant that they were at least together, Gamora wasn't going to just suddenly vanish back to where she'd come from. So it was almost a relief really, for now. Although they couldn't stay there forever and when that came up, they'd handle it then.

"What people?" Gamora asked. She still hadn't let go of Nebula's hand, holding it gently in her own, a point of contact and something to keep them both together. "Is there a ship?" Because a ship would feel safe, would give them shelter even if they were stuck there.

The moment of affection passed, even for Nebula it was still new. It would take time for it to feel the way it had once, though even then it had been stilted and strange for them. To have been at odds for so much of their lives, finding their way back had been a journey, and Nebula was not fool enough to think that the same would not be true now.

For now though they had this to deal with, the reality of this place and their new situation. "Avengers. Some of them fought on Earth against Thanos. Though they do not remember it." It was confusing, to realize that the people here did not seem to recall the things she had, like they had not lived it even though Nebula had seen it with her own eyes, experienced it with them in some cases.

"They have been pulled from an earlier time." Much the same way that Gamora had been after everything. "And brought here, for some reason." That she was still trying to understand. Why these people, why this place, why now. And why so many who did not know their own futures.

"There are pieces of ships that I have seen. None whole or functioning." But they could fix one, the two of them.

Growing up they'd been sisters in more than just name, the two little girls had played together and it had felt like having a real family. Gamora wondered if it might feel like that again, if in time they'd be back there in a new and grown up way. All she knew was that she hoped they would be.

It seemed like this place was relatively safe, what with people from the battle on their side and it so small. Gamora nearly always felt safe anyway, she could look after herself. "Oh so I'm not the only one now who doesn't remember," Gamora said and she was a little bit pleased to consider it. She'd spent a lot of time thinking about what she didn't know, what she'd missed and how now she'd never live it.

Because now she knew, even returned to her own time it wouldn't play out as it was supposed to. Her future was forever altered no matter what. Which considering she wasn't alive in the time Nebula was from might have been for the best.

"We'll have to take a look at them. Do you have shelter?"

She nodded, Nebula did not think any of them would do them any good, but they would look and see what they could do with them, if there was anything to be salvaged or repaired and made whole so they could take them out of this place. That was for another day, today there was just the two of them, making sure Gamora knew she was safe and that this was not a trap or a trick, the Nebula had feared it might be when she had first found Tony.

"I was offered a place with Tony." And Rogers, they were cohabitating here in this place, odd when they had seemed so distant with one another in her time. But they had been here living their lives perhaps making peace in ways they had not been able to in the past.

"But there are houses." She explained, holding out a hand around them to the surrounding buildings. "We can take one for ourselves." The space with Tony had been welcome, she would have stayed there of course, been grateful for it - but if she had the option of staying with Gamora then she would. "Make it our own."

It would be strange, perhaps. The freedom to live together in a place of their own choosing, not in the cramped confines of a ship, but in a home - a Terran home perhaps, but one none the less. This was not something she had ever envisioned for herself or her sister, even after playing over her options for the day that she finally tracked down Gamora again, this had not been what she had seen.

Nebula had a place and yet she was going to give it up to make a place with her. Gamora squeezed her hand, absolutely still not ready to give it up. A house together, something to make their own. Even if this was on a planet of some kind and felt all wrong? Getting to have that with her sister actually made up for it.

Thanos was dead and that meant her purpose was gone, Gamora hadn't known what to do with herself alone and now here they were, back together. "Make it our own," Gamora agreed. For the night they could stay with Tony and then in the morning they could see about something for themselves.

Gamora held her sisters hand all the way home.
