Who: Anyone who wants to come by
What: Grand-opening party!
Where: Pancho's Bar
When: Friday Night

The streamers were up (because Jan had insisted), and the bar was as ready as it ever would be. Alcohol was stored in a few make-shift shelves on the back wall and a relatively well-cobbled together bar was freshly polished and ready to go. It wasn't the most well-put-together, place, but Pancho's definitely resembled its namesake in terms of dim lighting, chipped tables and a floor that looked like it should be sticky. All in all, Carol was pretty proud of what they'd made. The minifridge was even a good choice since it allowed them to keep some drinks cold (they were going to have to find a larger one in the future, though).

She had warned Peter that the pizza oven needed to be ready by that evening, but she wasn't sure how on the ball with that he was. She'd been busy doing damage control on some electrical issues they were having with the fridge and double checking to make sure they actually had drinking cups (that took a little bit of maneuvering, but Clint came through with the coffee mugs). Yup, vodka from coffee mugs, a mini-fridge filled with a variety of stolen beers, and mismatched chairs. And, of course, the balloons. The annoying, awful squeaky balloons that had floated into a couple of corners of the room, save for the two that kept dragging on the floor and that Carol dreaded would pop at some point that evening. Definitely professional.

Karaoke was set up in one corner of the room with a make-shift stage and Christmas lights (Yes, more Christmas lights) decorating around it. Old 80s rock music blasted from the speakers for now, and Carol stood behind the bar, ready to serve as needed but more than willing to drag anyone else into the position should they so choose that evening.

Remus always noticed Sirius. But not for the reasons most other people probably did. He didn't really know much about the Black family and all that. Of course he'd thought Sirius was beautiful the second he saw him but he'd also seen.. well, a lot more. Ever the constant observer, he'd always known there was far more to Sirius than what met the eye. Beneath that ridiculously handsome exterior was an even more incredible person. Others might argue he was selfish and arrogant, but Remus would argue that with every last breath he took.

In short, yes, his good looks were there and always would be. Sirius was just a gorgeous man. But it was what was beneath it all that really had always stood out to Remus.

"For once, I'm good for it," he said. It wasn't always that Remus could manage something like that but in this case he could afford at least a round or two. "So, whatever you desire." The Thing was there, bubbling under the surface of their intent to go out for fun. When wasn't it there, honestly? But right now it was at a simmer which was really pretty normal.

They might both be able to afford a third or forth round, considering that money didn't seem to mean much of anything in this place. Everything was based on kindness, favors and trade. Sirius rather liked that. He could do some transfigure work, or scavenging in another world, and in turn get snacks or drinks or clothes without needing to too much else. It felt strangely honest, in a way. And strange, because Sirius was used to just... having more than most, sort of. It wasn't bad, though. Not even a little.

But that... was not really the point right here, right now. It was more to do with The Thing. The Thing, and the little stars on Remus' shift, which probably didn't actually have anything to do with him, but he liked to think so anyway. Sirius leaned forward, elbows on the table, and eyebrows lifting playfully. "Whatever I desire?" He parroted, amused. It felt too easy. Or not easy enough. He never really knew which was which. "Surprise me, Moony."

The Thing. They'd been dancing around it for years, and though they'd been successful in not talking about it Remus felt uncertain if that was the right course of action. They'd both been too afraid of it to really give it a chance. Or at least, they were afraid of how things could go south if they messed it up. Losing what they had now was unfathomable. Remus knew what it felt like to lose Sirius once. He was entirely certain he couldn't handle losing him again and have the ability to come back from that. But Remus also knew full well the price they paid for not indulging in the Thing. He couldn't say for sure that things would've ended up differently, but he was pretty confident they would've had a better shot.

The little stars may have had everything to do with Sirius. Remus' sense of style had always been a little quirky, and now was no exception. But it worked for him. He couldn't pull off the 'devil may care' look that Sirius effortlessly seemed to just put together no matter what he had on but quirky, he could do. He turned just so he could look at his friend. A little smile pulled at his lips; it was unavoidable. But he also felt a pang of sadness in his heart. He'd been missing Sirius so much at home. He missed having nights like this when they'd go out and have a drink and a laugh. But he knew he needed to be present, now. He wanted to be present in the moment.

With the decision on him, he got them both some classic Old Fashioned whiskeys. Remus figured it was a good start. Once they had them, he held his glass in hand. "What do we toast to first, Padfoot?"

It was a place like this that really made The Thing more of a Thing than it'd been back home -- at least for Sirius. Oh, sure, it'd always been there, sometimes right in their faces and sometimes calm and below the surface of things. But the very idea that there was some time for the both of them where things went to shit, where they would be without family and each other because of their own bad decisions? Well. It had Sirius thinking a bit more about it than he might have usually.

About what could be, and how things could be better between them. About how the very concept of being without Remus made him want to find a dark hole to crawl into and cry over. Certainly, he was aware that The Thing wasn't a magical fix all to things like lying and hiding truths. But -- he knew them both well enough to know how their own levels of commitment worked.

Plus Remus just looked bloody fucking good when he walked off to get drinks, and even better when he came back. "To us," he decided boldly, holding up the cup that he was pretty sure was meant for tea and not drinks, but fit liquid in just fine anyway.

There were still a myriad of excuses Remus could come up with to avoid The Thing, and he was sure Sirius could come up with plenty more too. Now his biggest worry, other than messing everything up and losing their friendship, was that he was being pushed by a desperate and devastating turn of events back home. He sure as hell didn't want that to influence Sirius either. That wasn't a reason to bring to light something that they'd been holding back for so long. It wasn't the right reason, but maybe it was still a valid one. To counter that, Remus could argue that really, it shouldn't matter what the reason was so long as the feelings were true and there. And bloody hell, they were. They'd always been there.

What they were doing now was falling back into old habits. They got just enough from each other to take the edge off of The Thing, but it never went away. It was a content place to be but it wasn't what it could be and Remus knew that. He was pretty sure Sirius knew it too. If they addressed it, if they acted on it, it wouldn't take away the pain of knowing what was going on back home for Remus or what was in store for Sirius should they ever get back there. But they also could see this place as an opportunity to finally get it right.

The toast Sirius chose had Remus' heart do that fluttering thing it always did whenever Sirius did something that made him feel special. He lifted his cup. Sirius was starting off bold, but then, Remus ought to have expected that. "To us," he repeated, and raised his cup, which most definitely was for tea, and clinked it to Sirius'. He held his best friend's gaze probably, definitely, a little longer than he should've before he brought his cup to his lips for a swig.

Yeah, they really had always been there. Practically since day one when James and Sirius had been immediate friends and then decided that they needed one more. Remus had been right there, and quietly shy but not in a boring way, not even remotely. Anyone who ever thought Lupin was boring was and idiot who was missing the point of him completely.

But sometimes Sirius wouldn't bother to correct anyone from that opinion because it meant he got to keep Remus to himself (And James, he supposed. And Pet--well. No. Not anymore. Never Peter again. But Sirius wasn't in the mood to consider him even a little right now).

That prolonged eye contact was really something else, and Sirius tipped his head forward slightly, smiling a smile that was about as smug as it got because -- well. Remus wasn't particularly subtle. Maybe they were just both at the point where subtle wasn't a thing that mattered anymore.

He took a drink too, probably more of it in one go than was necessary. It was a proper and good surprise, what Remus had picked. "Oh, very nice. Say," he said, leaning forward in a way that had him standing instead of sitting, half of him across the table in order to be in Remus' space, just a little. "You come here often?"

The opinions of others were never really all that important to Remus. Having it drilled into his head before he'd even turned five years old that most people were going to think the worst of him and that he was a horrifying monster, well, it made being thought of as boring or awkward kind of tame. That being said, once he'd gained friends, their opinions mattered more to him than they probably should have. More than that, he'd probably needed to have more faith in the fact that his friends would've liked him no matter what, so he probably shouldn't have turned a blind eye to some of their more reckless and 'mean' pranks out of fear of what they'd -- specifically Sirius Black -- think.

He'd always thought the world of Sirius. Sometimes he felt jealousy stir when others would get his attention (particularly when the full moon approached -- raging werewolf hormones and all), but he always knew Sirius would come back to him. Sirius was nothing if not loyal, he knew.

Subtlety had been the name of the game for far too long. They both knew why they were there, and if they wanted to drink and use alcohol as a convenient excuse to brush there flirtations aside then they were just fooling themselves. Wasn't that really the name of the game? Merlin, they were idiots.

"First time, I must confess," he said, though his lips twitched into a bit of a wolfish smirk. "But I guess you could say I'm passionately curious."

It was true, Sirius was loyal to a fault. It was really something of a wonder that he hadn't ended up in Hufflepuff. It probably would have been a nice stint right there next to the kitchens. But no, his reckless nature and acting-before-thinking attitude had trumped most anything else. Well, that and the fact that he'd been brave enough to defy his family completely by not wanting anything to do with the Slytherin title.

It'd worked out well, anyway. He'd met and kept his very best friends in shared rooms and next to a roaring fireplace. Hogwarts had been a much simpler time, even when he'd been making mistakes.

Sirius liked it when Remus did that thing -- smiled in a way that was practically sharp, a little predatory. It suited him, even if it was a look that rarely came out. He liked it more that it mostly came out for him. "Well," he said, taking another drink to slow his words, "fancy meeting you here, then. I reckon we could find some way to sate all that curiosity if we try hard enough?"

Really, Remus had never quite understood why the Sorting Hat placed him in Gryffindor until he was older and understood how it worked. He'd thought he was a better candidate for Ravenclaw, given his thirst for knowledge and studious habits. He probably would've excelled, but it ultimately would've been a mistake because of his affliction. He would've been ousted, most likely, and it would've been disastrous. While the hat was on his head, he'd been looking over at the table where the two dark haired boys were sitting and he knew he wanted to be wherever they were. He didn't know why; he didn't think they'd ever want to be his friend -- he wasn't even allowed to have friends. He just wanted it more than he thought he'd wanted anything, and that was likely why the hat announced Remus Lupin was the newest addition to Gryffindor at the time. There were other moments when he thought maybe Dumbledore had rigged it on purpose, that he knew Remus should end up in the company of James, Sirius and (at the time) Peter because he knew they'd accept him. But he didn't want to give Dumbledore more credit than he deserved. He wasn't Remus' favorite person these days.

No, that title had always belonged to the bloke who was currently in such close quarters to him right now. Even back home, when they'd been at each other's throats, that hadn't changed. Nothing could change it.

That particular smile was most definitely reserved for Sirius. It usually didn't last long though, as his shyness sometimes crippled it. It was certainly trying in the way that his cheeks and the tips of his ears were starting to grow hot. "Reckon so," he replied, a little coy, with a dash of shyness as he brought his drink to his lips again for another little swig. "Anything you have in mind?"

Sirius considered that question with the sort of gravity that he might not normally. Really, they'd just gotten here but this was just a pub, and it wasn't like Remus and him hadn't seen one or five of those before (even if this one was new and quite possibly the new most interesting thing in Starklandia). But the curiosities they were speaking of weren't going to be found behind the bar or on the weird screen across the room (even if Sirius didn't really know what it was, and did want to find out at some point). No, it wasn't what was currently on his mind, or what he had in mind.

He smiled behind his mug and then tilted his head one way and then the other like he had a decision to make. Which-- actually. He kind of did. Now or later? Never wasn't in the cards and wasn't any kind of choice at all. The Thing was there, and always would be.

"Think we could take a bottle to go?" He asked, bolstered by Remus' coyness. "Maybe see the sights from the roof?"

They had only just arrived and were on their first drink. Were it the past, they might've nursed another two before holding onto each other and stumbling home. The Thing would still be ever present, maybe some cuddles went down that went a little far and they could never bring up would transpire before they passed out, and all would be normal the following morning. Hangovers, maybe, with Remus assuring Sirius a chocolate kiss would do the trick. But this wasn't Remus' past, or Sirius' present back home. This was their time, now, in Starklandia and they both knew what was at stake back home. They both knew the price of not acknowledging The Thing. So there they were, flirting and sort of letting The Thing out. It wasn't in full force, sort of as though it was sticking a toe out to test the waters. That was fine.

The thing about The Thing was that once it was out, it was out and there was no putting it back in. The way they'd been dancing around it allowed them to keep the door mostly closed without actually locking it. It was comfortable; it was what they knew. Comfortable and wonderful. But if they opened the door and let The Thing out? Would it be even better? More wonderful? That was the question Remus had always been too scared to answer but as they were sitting there and he was looking into Sirius' rather remarkable eyes he was pretty sure he knew the answer. He always had.

"I do enjoy the sights from a height," he teased. "Bet we could lift a bottle without making too much of a stir." His heart was starting to beat a bit faster, sped up by excitement and nerves and wonder and just.. Sirius. "I chose our first drink. You choose the bottle."

Even more wonderful. Probably. Hopefully. Because Sirius had been sitting back and just letting The Thing be what it was for as long as he could remember practically but now that he was taking the wheel -- well. He didn't want to do the wrong thing, that was all. He wanted this to be good.

But with Remus sitting there with his little star shirt, looking handsome and brilliant and a little like he was ready for mischief (which was, of course, the best look on him)? Sirius didn't know how anything at all could go badly between them. Not even a little bit. This was going to be wonderful. Brilliant. And they both deserved that.

"Right, right," Sirius agreed -- and rather thought that he could sweet talk the woman behind the bar into giving him something rather than stealing. "Off you go and I'll catch you up, yeah?" Not that there were many people around who'd give any sort of a shit, but it was best not to cause any kind of commotion when he had plans that he wanted to be getting to. It'd be an absolute shame to get caught up in something else in the moment. He grinned, bright and flirty. And it was promise, maybe.

Remus didn't want to do the wrong thing either. He was highly intelligent and gifted in many ways, but it wasn't like he was overflowing with experience in these matters. He had plenty of experience with The Thing, but only as a bystander. It was almost as though he and Sirius were just watching The Thing be nurtured between them, growing more and more all the time. Right now, they were actively starting to really engage with it and as familiar as The Thing was, this was uncharted territory. If he messed it up, he'd be devastated.

They weren't going to mess it up, were they? Remus didn't want to think so. He felt like they both had enough care for each other that they wouldn't let it go sour.

"Mm," he nodded. His gaze lingered on Sirius, and he didn't really hide the fact that he was checking him out. He knew he was blushing but he didn't try to hide that either. Sirius knew him; he knew him better than anyone. It'd be abnormal if he wasn't blushing. "Don't be long," he said, and grinned back at him. Even though they both knew Remus would wait for Sirius forever.

No, blushing was an absolute regularity and Sirius was fond of it. Loved it even, rather. Because it meant that he was clearly doing something right. And Sirius was a confident sort, of course he was, but even he liked that extra bit of encouragement.

He winked at Remus and then made off to go get the bottle. Preferably something a little sweet so they didn't have to wince their way through it, although anything would do in a pinch.

Once he'd managed that, he made his way outside and glanced up at the roof, contemplating a way to get up there easily enough. Mind, he was a wizard and it wasn't hard even though sometimes Sirius wanted a little challenge in wall scaling.

"Oi," he said once he was up there, spotting Remus at the edge. "Found the best spot, did you?"

There was music in the bar, and it was just loud enough to be heard outside, a muffled sound that just covered what would have otherwise been silence. Sirius liked that. It suited him, really.

Coming out of the bar, Remus let the cooler air hit him and shivered just a little. It wasn't cold, but he'd been so flushed from the whiskey and Sirius that a little breeze felt good on his heated skin. He looked up at the sky, littered with stars which always comforted him despite the fact that the moon was such an anxiety triggering entity in his life.

It only took a moment for him to get up onto the roof, where he sat in wait for Sirius to join him. His heart was still racing. How long had they been doing this? Longer for Remus, given where he was in life. Too long. Were they really going to go there tonight? It was kind of exciting and a little bit terrifying but ultimately exactly what he hoped would happen. It might not, though. One of them might revert back to just barely avoiding The Thing, and they'd fall right back into their old habits.

When Sirius joined him, Remus turned to look up at him; he was stunning, truly. "Of course," he said. "Only the best for us. That edge of the roof just there is rubbish." A little smirk tugged at his lips. "This side, however, is the best spot."

"I love the best spot," Sirius declared, traipsing over in a playful sort of swish, and anyone else probably would have looked ridiculous doing so in a leather jacket and sunglasses, but Sirius wasn't really one for any kind of shame. "You're a proper good one, looking out like that, Moony."

He sat down, shoulder pressed firmly against Remus' even as he let his legs dangle over the edge of the roof. "I managed off with something green," he said, tone a little curious. "Melon liquor. Muggles are fun, aren't they?" He twisted the bottle open anyway, took a sip and handed it over to Remus all while putting on a thoughtful face.

There had always been a little sense of giddiness, a rush of warmth that spread through him and usually resonated in the form of tinting Remus' cheeks pink whenever Sirius praised him for something. It seemed childish now, after everything they'd been through, all the hardships and pain and fighting (in his timeline at least), but somehow, Sirius still brought that out in him even just by jokingly complimenting where Remus decided they ought to sit. The simplest things could bring forth the greatest joy, and the funny thing was Sirius likely had zero idea he was making Remus so happy.

"It's so green," he marveled at it, curious. Remus was always a little cautious, only because of his senses being, well, hyper-sensitive. Tastes and particularly scents were always a bit amplified. He sniffed the bottle when Sirius handed it to him and thought on it for a few seconds. It smelled fruity and alcoholic which, he supposed, fit the bill for melon liquor. "Muggles are most definitely interesting." Half of his family were Muggles. Granted, Remus never really had been around them much but his mother had told him plenty and taught him a great deal about Muggle culture. He tipped the bottle and took a swig, swallowed and let his taste buds sort of figure out if he liked it or not. It was a bit sweet, but he thought that might be best. He'd gotten used to hard whiskeys back home. This was better. It fit the mood better.

And what a mood, indeed.

Sirius was ridiculous, wearing sunglasses at night, but it was those silly little things that made Remus' heart flutter. He held the bottle between them so Sirius could have more if he wanted it. He leaned to the side, pressing their shoulders even more together, and shifted one of his legs just so that Sirius' calf could rest against his shin. There were a million and one things, at least, that he wanted to say. But instead he looked up, looking at all those stars, and thought maybe all the answers to everything he had to say were right there, or maybe they were just beside him. His gaze fell to his best friend, and again his heart started to regularly skip beats.

Sirius rather decided that he liked the liquor -- it was very sweet but also light, not so cloying that it stuck to his tongue and made him regret any of his life choices leading up to this moment. No, it was fairly mellow and he could see the both of them finishing the bottle off without problem or complaint. And wouldn't that be fun?

More fun yet, Sirius thought, after he took the bottle and took another drink - a swig instead of a sip -- was what Remus might taste like past the liquor. Sirius had always wondered, sometimes rather intensely. It'd taken up daydreams and late nights alone.

It was probably about time he found out. More than. He glanced up at the stars for a second, let out a huff of a laugh, mostly at himself because he'd never treated kissing so seriously before in his life, and he'd done plenty enough of it. But not with Remus, who mattered. That's what made it important.

"Hey," he said, when he looked back over and found Remus staring at him. He didn't know why, he just loved that sort of thing, when the whole of Remus' attention was on him. "C'mere." But he didn't wait anyway, he only curled in closer until he could get in close enough for a kiss.

More times than Remus could recall -- which was saying something, considering the capacity of his memory was pretty extensive -- he'd wondered what it would be like to kiss Sirius Black. He might have even imagined it a few times, while holding onto his pillow at night and pressing his lips to it, wishing desperately he was holding onto his best friend instead. Sometimes he felt guilty about that, as though maybe he shouldn't think of Sirius that way, that it wasn't fair to him. But as they grew older, as The Thing became far more apparent that it was something they both knew and acknowledged existed even though they didn't act on it, he didn't feel as bad. He just wanted it all the more.

There had been times during the war, when Remus really thought they were going to do it and so much more. But there was a fine line between looking at each other like they were ready to pull each other apart and ready to pull each other's clothes off. Somehow, some way, they'd never managed to cross the line even if it blurred every so often.

But now, sitting there on the roof, Remus felt like everything seemed much more clear. There wasn't a reason to bury The Thing anymore. They didn't need to hide it. It was there, it was theirs, and rather than run from it, it only made sense to embrace it. Sirius was far braver of the two of them, so Remus felt some relief when he spoke. He'd already been looking at him, which made him smile as their eyes met. And finally, finally, they took the plunge together.

For as often as he'd dreamed about kissing Sirius, the real thing exceeded it in ways Remus never knew possible. He'd kissed a few people before. He didn't have the experience Sirius did but there'd been a few times he'd done it. It never meant anything which in turn made him feel sick about it. But this? This meant everything. His eyes closed as their lips met, and Remus lifted a hand to cup the side of Sirius' face. His heart felt like it was going to beat right out of his chest, he was so happy. Finally, he could wordlessly convey what he felt by means of kissing the boy he'd loved for so long.
