WHO: Natasha and Clint
WHAT: Another trip through the doors
WHERE: Small Town
WHEN: Today

The doors were still a source of mystery to Natasha, even after her trips through before had ended not quite happily she was still eager to go through again and see what she might find on the other side, and today she was roping Clint into coming along with her. After all what was the fun of an adventure with no one to share it with? And she hadn't had nearly enough time with him since she'd arrived, her own fault mostly, but she was looking to change that.

So there they were, "I've got a good feeling about this one." She'd told him as she pulled open the door and they'd stepped through.

"Look, it's not forever, just for a couple of weeks." Her manager had said to her.

Natasha hadn't wanted to leave, but she needed to get out of the city, even she could admit that much. After her relationship had fallen apart very publicly with her partner announcing to the world that he was getting married to his mistress who was also pregnant? Well she'd been hounded relentlessly with people wanting her to comment on it, but she'd still been processing it all herself, how was she supposed to tell them anything about what she felt when not even she knew the answer to that. "What am I supposed to do out there for a couple of weeks?" She'd complained.

But she knew it would be good to get away for a little while, where she didn't have a camera in her face every time she stepped out the door.

"Relax, take in the scenery, maybe you'll meet someone." Natasha had to hold back the groan that wanted to come out. But there had been no arguing it, and she'd been on a flight later that same day, which had ended in an hour drive to a little bed and breakfast that might have been sweet if she was out here for any other reason than getting over a broken heart. But things were what they were and she made her wearily inside, leaning against the counter and rang the bell.

"Oh!" When the bell rang, Clint squeaked in surprise and got up from his spot down on the floor beneath the counter -- dragging himself up to standing and bringing a stack of well-loved looking comic books with him. "Hi! Sorry about that, it's been a quiet day. Just kinda lost track of time." He smiled, and it was a goofy, honest kind of smile that said he meant well. "You booked a room, right?"

He glanced over at the book (yes book) of handwritten reservations -- names, dates, room numbers. "Romanoff?" It was possible, of course, that she was someone who ought to have been recognized on sight, but Clint either just wasn't letting on to that fact, or he was extremely unaware of it.

It was the latter. He just didn't know who she was beyond a phone call and name in a book -- and, well, now a pretty face in front of him.

Natasha's eyebrows rose up toward her hairline just a touch when a man suddenly appeared behind the desk, it didn't take a genius to figure out he'd been on the floor - it was, well she didn't really know what it was. A far cry from the five star hotels she was used to staying in perhaps. Still he had a nice smile, warm and friendly, even if a bit silly. She decided she liked it, even if it wasn't what she was sued to. "Ah yes, I think so." At least that's what her manager had said. So she hoped that things had actually been taken care of and she wasn't just going to end up standing here with nothing waiting for her.

And she nodded when he asked her name, not sure if he actually knew it on his own or just the reservation - but she saw it there in the book of reservations, no computers tucked behind desks here it seemed. It was quaint, and she got the impression that had been part of the point. A little bit of distance from things like the internet and comment pages and a little more time in the real paper and pen kind of world.

"That's me," She agreed. "It's quiet, is it always this quiet around here?" She wondered, curious now and well, she wanted to talk a little bit maybe, with someone who didn't look at her with pity or confusion. It was a welcome change.

He didn't have to sit on the floor. He could have grabbed a chair or sat on the counter or any number of things really, but if you were going to read comic books, the best place to do it was on the floor. That was just the rules. He didn't make them up, he just followed them.

"Well, you thought right," Clint agreed, with another smile before taking a few notes in his book and then opening up the drawer underneath him to pull out some paperwork and a set of keys. "And good timing too. I think it's supposed to snow later on, y'know? Real bummer when it comes to travel."

He considered the question and then shrugged. "Depends on the time of year. We go hard about Christmas, but you know how it is. Everyone's traveling somewhere to go see their families and there's not a ton of people here at all so..." He shrugged. "Kinda slow."

It was strange watching him take actual notes, and not just typing into a computer, and stranger still when he pulled out paperwork and actual keys too. This place was like stepping into the past, she couldn't remember the last time she'd had to use a key at a hotel of any kind, but maybe that was the point when you went to a place like this? To embrace the nostalgia and a simpler time.

Whatever the case may be she was still just sort of processing it, but at least he was nice. It was sort of exactly what she needed right then, just some sort of kind interaction with someone who wasn't demanding something of her. At least not anything more than confirmation of who she was.

"Makes sense," She agreed of his assessment of this time of year and it's effect on business. "So what were you reading down there?" She wondered, peering over the counters edge where she could just see the corners of what looked like comics.

Definitely it was about nostalgia and simpler times -- a town like this, hell, most people didn't even lock their doors to their homes. So all that fancy key card stuff would seem out of place. Clint liked it around here for those reasons -- no need to ever feel worry or concern about stuff you shouldn't have had to anyway. He liked to think that people who visited could get something good out of the experience, too.

"Comics," Clint said, grinning in a way that said he probably should be embarrassed, but he really just wasn't. No point in being shamed for something you liked if it wasn't weird, right? He pulled the stack up and set it closer to Natasha, to show off a varied pile. "You ever read any? This one's basically a space opera," he said, tapping at the top issue.

It was probably something she would have appreciated at some other time, maybe after she'd had a shower and a sleep - the sort of nostalgia of this place, days gone by and a simpler time all of that sort of thing. But at the moment it all just seemed to serve as a sort of reminder that she was running from something - which was exactly what she was trying to forget.

The comics at least were a welcome distraction, and she tilted her head a little to see the titles when he brought the stack up for her to see. It wasn't what she'd expected, but she certainly wasn't about to suggest that a grown man couldn't enjoy some comics if he wanted to. "It's been a while," She admitted, but enjoyed the look of the cover he said was basically a space opera. It was unlike anything she'd ever read before.

"I always liked the ah, I guess Archie comics?" She told him, not sure if that was the name anymore or not. "For a while there I told myself I could be a comic book artist, I had a whole shoe box full of my own hand drawn comics." She admitted with a soft laugh, surprised that the memory had come to her so quickly like that. But he was a welcome thing considering what had filled her head so much recently.

"Sure, Archie comics," Clint agreed, because he read a bit of everything, and who didn't love a little bit of Veronica and Betty, or Sabrina the teenaged Witch? It wasn't his favorite, but he could see why others liked them, and why they'd run basically forever -- years and years. Comics didn't last like that if they weren't popular.

He grinned at the idea of this woman hiding away shoeboxes worth of drawings and comics. It was charming, kind of. He didn't know why -- she just didn't quite seem like the sort. "It's never too late to start up again," he said with a smile. "You wanna borrow some to read, you feel free. Want me to --show you to your room?" Clint liked the conversation and all, but he knew better than to try keeping people for too long.
