Who: Sirius Black, Eddie Kaspbrak
What: Building a hammock
Where: The Loser’s House
When: Saturday, 10-12

Admittedly, Sirius hadn’t really been the most helpful of the adults during this whole children debacle. Sure, he’d shrunk a few items down and helped a tiny version of Tony Stark find some groceries, but he wasn’t out there offering to feed kids thrice daily or setting up playpens or whatever it was the rest of the people in town were doing. Mostly because — well. When he’d been a younger thing (not all that long ago — Sirius wasn’t especially old, he’d only turned twenty less than a month ago now) he would have done an awful lot of things to have the kind of freedom these kids were having right now.

Some needed help though, and Sirius wasn’t the sort of wizard or man to ignore someone when they were asking for it. Or when they talked about how shit their mum was. Because if nothing else? He got that. So he left a note for Remus, stuck his wand in his back pocket and then got to gathering a few things that he’d need to transfigure the absolute best hammock that wizardry could make.

The thing about little Eddie was, Sirius didn’t know him. So he wasn’t even really all that sure if he was a kid on accident this week or if he’d shown up that way or not. He also hadn’t thought to ask where he lived. But Starklandia was rather small, and no other houses had initials carved into a spot that was bizarrely low down on the door. Or at all really. But there it was. R + E. It didn’t take anyone clever to figure that one out and Sirius was clever.

So he knocked.

Eddie would find out soon enough that Sirius wasn't much of an adult by --well. Whatever standards they measured that sort of thing in. He wasn't cut out for that sort of thing, and was just lucky, really, that he'd ended up here because his future would have forced him to do more growing up than any one person should have ever had to. And knowing about it (which he did, to some extent) was different than living it. Mostly now he was marveling over how adorably romantic and innocent the gesture of carving initials into the door was. "Maybe I ought to do one," he said, although most of his attention was focused on up the stairs -- from which no reply came. Probably for the best. Sirius was here to do work, not watch two kids make time with each other. "R + S. Moony'd love it."

Speaking of, Sirius decided that there was something about Eddie that reminded him quite a lot of Remus when he'd been about that age. Maybe it was the slight build or how he was a little twitchy. Or maybe it was just that he was so clearly exasperated with his best friend turned romantic interest for being ridiculous -- all while clearly still actually enjoying whatever it was he was complaining about. They slept in one bed and rough housed in another. That was just so. Cute. "S'fair. Hard to know who to ask when you just show up. Some people are better at getting stuff than others. I can do medium shelves. But hey-- What's wrong with getting picked up?"

Sirius plopped himself down on the floor and went about clearing out his pockets -- really just of a little tiny box and then a foil wrapped chocolate bar -- which he handed over to Eddie without being prompted. Sometimes chocolate was just required.

That was assuming that Eddie loved it. He didn't know when Richie had managed to do that or where he'd found something appropriately sharp to do it with. But there it was. Carved into the door at a height where Eddie (or Richie) could clearly see it while lying on the floor. That may have been why he missed it. He wouldn't, normally, do something like that. It made the spot a perfect, yet obvious, place for a confession. Sirius had noticed it, after all. Eddie probably would've too after awhile. Reaching out, he ran a finger over the carving and decided he did love it. Even if it announced certain things about them to the world. "He probably would." Eddie agreed. "Even if he doesn't say it."

Sirius had Eddie pegged. No matter how exasperated he got with Richie's ridiculousness or how many times he started an argument over these things, he enjoyed the attention. He liked the carving. He liked the teasing. He liked being leaned on or tripped into or just... anything. He liked Richie. Finding the nerve to express it, however, seemed to throw a few hiccups into their routine. Maybe it wouldn't have if Eddie had run away but, after hiding out and thinking about it, he knew there was a high possibility that Richie would've had the same reaction. They'd both grown uo in Derry and Eddie wasn't completely oblivious to what some of the other kids said about his best friend.

"We didn't know who to ask about anything. None of the other Losers were here." Sirius didn't need to know about the confusion surrounding Bills and a red door. They didn't know who to ask so they didn't ask anyone which didn't work out until Eddie got the idea into his head that they needed a hammock. He liked the idea of shelves though so he could kind of organize Richie's chaos and a sofa. With the sofa, however, he was pretty sure they would mostly push it around. Steal the cushions and a few blankets and set up a fort or something. With the exception of the hammock, anything that Sirius might be willing to conjure up for them would probably end up being used for something else.

"He won't take it seriously and drop me." Not on purpose and not hard. Eddie probably shouldn't even say that Richie would drop him. The other boy would just fall backwards with Eddie still in his arms. Then Eddie would have to freak out over whether or not Richie had hurt himself. Medium shelves that he could reach without much climbing were probably the better option.

He watched Sirius for a moment before moving to slowly plop down somewhere around him. He didn't want to be in the guy's way. He didn't know what he needed to do or how much space he needed. He was surprised to be handed the bar of chocolate but his face lit up a little. He broke off a piece to nibble on while he watched but it was probably obvious that he planned on offering, at least, half of it to his favorite person.

It was sort of cute, watching Eddie go all fond over some letters carved in a door -- especially because he'd just shouted at the stairs over the same thing. Apparently it'd just taken a moment to sink in. That one was clearly more impulsive than the other was about par for the course so far as he knew, and Sirius was sort of charmed watching Eddie figure out just what he was fond versus tolerant of. "He'd say so. Or sigh a bit. Which is kind of like saying so. You should meet Remus some time. You'd like him. He's very sensible."

Sirius didn't quite know why Eddie called his friends Losers, but it had that capital letter sort of vibe to it, like Marauders did, so he obviously approved. It was good to have a group of people, the ones you could tell anything to and really trust. Sirius missed that a bit sometimes, so he just nodded thoughtfully even as he pulled his wand out and tapped it on the little box that'd previously been in his pocket -- and suddenly it was the size of a proper trunk. He could work and talk easily at the same time -- if nothing else, Sirius was an expert at transfiguration and a task like this? He could do it with his eyes closed.

No spell of this nature had seemed particularly difficult since he'd mastered the art of being an animagus back in fifth year.

"Sometimes it's fun to fall," Sirius said, pulling out some bits of wood and looking around the room for the best placement for the furniture that Eddie wanted. "I know it sounds like it can be scary. But give it a go. More often than not, it's a laugh. When you're with the right person, anyway. Okay, look. This hammock, just by being what it is and how it stands, it's going t'be permanently placed, so you've got to pick a spot you know you'll like."

Was sighing the same as saying so? Maybe it was. He tried to think about whether or not the same could be said about any time he'd sighed at Richie's antics but didn't try to think too hard about it. Richie wasn't the type to settle for a sigh. Often times he kept pushing on a subject until Eddie reacted which, in his defense, didn't usually take much. Eddie had something of a short fuse and Richie had always known just how to push his buttons. Moony, however, sounded a little more patient. Like a mixture between himself and Stan. Possibly without the sarcasm and constant eye rolling. "I guess someone would have to be sensible." He teased because Sirius reminded him of Richie in a way though a little less hyperactive.

If asked about the Losers, Eddie could go on and on. He loved his friends with a fierceness that probably wasn't always obvious. He'd do anything for them. He'd already nearly died for them, broken his arm, and had been scared shitless. As happy as he was to have Richie's, mostly, undivided attention and not have to worry about the others catching them being a little too soft with each other he missed the others. Something he couldn't quite put his finger on made him miss Stan a little more than the others but trying to examine that one lead to a bone deep pain he wasn't about to try and look into. Whatever was hurting him about Stan would probably hurt Richie more so he didn't bring it up.

The Losers were the last thing on his mind as he watched the little box Sirius had pulled out of his pocket suddenly become larger. The size of an actual trunk. "What the fuck?" He breathed, eyes wide in a sort of astonishment as he jumped to his feet to make sure that what he was seeing was real. It was. Of course it was. He'd already accepted that magic could be (because when alien monster clowns that eat children are real the door's open) but, apparently, seeing it was still a shock. He ran around it, inspecting but not touching before he turned, wide eyed, towards Sirius. "That was so cool." Because it was and his favorite adult should know just how great Eddie thought he was.

He was an only child which meant he was his overbearing mother's only target. Sonia's care had left him isolated. Distant from most other children. Weird. He was lonely a lot. If he had been lucky enough to have an older brother he would've hoped they were like Sirius.

Stepping away from the trunk (and not touching the idea that it could be fun to fall. Falling wasn't fun. It was scary, duh) he moved to examine the room around him, even going as far as to close an eye and tilt his head as he pictured what things could look like with the hammock. He settled by the window for a moment, looking out of it, before pulling back and off to the side. Finding a spot where the light could filter through in the morning, where they could look up and out without the risk of someone looking in and seeing them directly. He was getting better with the idea that he could be in love with his male best friend and have it be okay but he still felt the need to hide a little. "Here." He said, motioning towards where he was standing.

Oh, no, there was definitely sarcasm and some eye-rolling. A lot of people probably forgot or didn't realize, for how mild mannered Moony tended to be, but he was one of the Marauders same as him and James. Moony was sarcastic and fun-loving as the rest of them. He just hid it better in public. And was, yes, generally more sensible. Eddie would probably like him.

Sirius had been an older brother, but the whole of the experience had been incredibly underwhelming, considering Regulus Black had never much liked him. They might have gotten on when they were younger, but their parents had pitted them against each other until there was no point in trying to socialize. Sometimes it made Sirius a bit morose to think on it for too long -- but then there were times like these when he thought someone who wasn't Regulus would have been a more thrilling experience. Eddie was clearly good little brother material, all clever and easily excited, but also cautious enough to have reasons for Sirius to be cajoling. It was fun. He grinned, all dimples and bright teeth and wriggled his wand like it was show and tell. "I am cool," he said, and firmly believed it.

Eddie picked a good spot, Sirius figured. Not too bright, but still in a spot that'd be warm with sunlight later on in the day. And it wasn't like it was exactly in a walkway or anything. He nodded his approval even as he popped his trunk open and started pulling out supplies. "A shelf next to it," he decided. "You muggles don't have accio. Dunno how you do it, sitting down and knowing you've got to get up for something if you forget it on the first go."

Either way, he got to work, eyeballing the space thoughtfully before building up sturdy support beams with wood and stone. "Transfiguration is just making one thing into another thing," he explained as he worked. "It's easy, once you figure it out."

Eddie would love Remus. He would probably attempt to follow Sirius home and just live with them if it weren't for Richie. Knowing Richie meant knowing his family and realizing that, maybe, Wentworth and Maggie Tozier weren't terrible people but they were distant with their son. Maybe worst. None of the Losers had had ideal family lives but none of them had truly understood that either. What it meant, however, was that Eddie was protective of Richie. He was wary of the adults he brought his friend around and that had nothing to do with the possibility that the adults could become annoyed. It had everything to do with Richie's feelings. Eddie understood that there were some wounds no amount of band-aids could ever fix and some sorrows that ran so deep even he couldn't pull Richie out of them.

They didn't actually need adult supervision anyway. They were fine. They were eating, they were (mostly) staying out of trouble, and Eddie made sure they kept clean. They were sleeping too even if they were staying up way past whatever bed time had been established for them back home and just relying on themselves to pass out wherever when they became tired enough. Best of all, they'd spent hours just running through the house without Eddie getting short of breath once. They'd rolled around in the grass (Richie more than him) without Eddie's allergies acting up. The alarm set on a watch that was too big for him had gone off several times reminding him to take the pills he didn't have and nothing had happened. The last one still made him panic a little. Feel a little more anxious because his mother had him believing he'd die without it. He was still alive though. Still in one piece so he was probably fine.

He returned pretty quickly to the place he'd been sitting before. Near enough to Sirius on the floor to see what he was doing but far enough to be out of the way. He wasn't Stan so, normally, he wouldn't mind being a little annoying but he was a little too amazed by what Sirius was doing, could do to actively try it. "I've never been cool." He laughed, sharing the information a little easier than one would expect. He was fine with it, really. The Losers had never been popular but it didn't matter. They had each other. While they weren't here he, at least, had Richie.

He scrunched his nose up curiously at some of the words Sirius used. "Muggles? Accio?" He was smart enough to realize that the first word probably meant him and people like him. Individuals without magic. Those who couldn't wave a wand and do something useful like shrink clothing or turn something into something else. He couldn't figure out accio. "If I ask nicely and he's in the right mood, Richie will get it for me." That was a lie. Eddie never had to ask nicely. "And sometimes I'll get Richie whatever he forgot. Or we both get up and get it ourselves." Look, it wasn't perfect but it was something that had to be done. They had a system and a lot of friends who were willing to toss things over to one another.

He fell silent after that, just watching Sirius work in a silent sort of amazement. "Easy for people like you, you mean." He said because he could never figure it out. He didn't have magic and he wasn't Ben so he was terrible at building things.

Sirius laughed when Eddie outright admitted to never having been cool -- it was charming in it's own right, and he didn't doubt that the kid figured it so. But Sirius wasn't so sure he believed it, either, because Eddie again reminded him a little of Remus. Who was a little nerdy, and looked a little fragile maybe but had a dry wit about him that was unrivaled, and who had easily fit in with Sirius and James -- coming up with some of the very best pranks that had been unleashed in the halls of Hogwarts. Eddie looked like he could cause some real mischief if he set his mind to it, and Sirius made a mental note to encourage a bit of misbehaving later on.

"Non-wizards, basically," Sirius said with a nod, standing up to test the sturdiness of the hammock frame he'd built up. "S'what we all call you. It's not overly polite sounding around regular people, I s'pose, but it is what it is. And accio --" He grinned. "Accio blanket," he said and a bit of cloth that he'd had in his trunk flew out of it, directly to his hand. "Summoning! Like I said, I dunno how you lot do it. Even if you ask Richie very politely." Which Sirius wisely doubted was the case, because two best friends were never all that polite to each other if they didn't have to be.

The blanket, he changed a bit, turning it into something thicker, more durable but also still comfortable and flexible, and attached it to the frame he'd made. "And oh. I dunno? I think in general. Mugg--regular people. They've got science and alchemy and can turn plenty of things into other things even without magic. Although being here -- there's a lot of different kinds. I don't think it's unlearnable even for people like you." That last bit was a tease based on Eddie's own words. "Try your new hammock out," he invited.

The Losers had been cool in their own way. Unfortunately, they were the only ones who'd thought so. Eddie couldn't say what it was about them that made them targets for bullies. He assumed it had something to do with their differences. There were other criticisms too. Darker, meaner things that hit closer to home and forced both himself and Richie to deny a lot of who they were. Sirius, however, was doing wonders at getting Eddie to accept himself and open up a little about it all. He could probably talk Eddie into a few pranks pretty easily.

He listened to Sirius explanation of the phrases, the other confirming what Eddie thought he'd meant. "I've been called worst." He admitted. Muggle wasn't a slur. It wasn't supposed to hurt, he didn't think. It was just meant to differentiate between those with magic and without. In any case it sounded far more polite than anything any of the Losers had had thrown their way. Falling silent again he watched as the blanket flew over into Sirius' hand. That was probably a better trick than getting Richie to grab something for him. He'd never actually been too polite about asking but something about the way the other boy looked at him when he was a little mean and a lot demanding made him think that Richie preferred it.

"I'm not the building type." Eddie said as he got up and walked towards the hammock. "That's Ben. Ben's the builder. He reinforced our clubhouse." He'd found it too though Eddie wasn't sure how. He also wasn't sure what a place like that was doing in Derry but the town was strange so he wasn't trying to think about it too hard. Climbing in (with just a little struggle because hammocks were weird without someone else in them already) he stretched out in it and smiled. It was comfortable. More so than the one in the clubhouse but only by a little and it was big. There was room enough for Richie and himself. They could probably fit a whole third person in with them. "It's perfect. Richie will agree." He said, smile big and bright. "Thank you, Sirius."

Sirius was an accepting sort. He believed very much in being yourself, even if no one else around wanted to agree with it. If that meant shunning family and other adults and just doing what felt right with those who felt right? Then that was the proper course of action. He knew this, he knew it to be absolute fact even if he'd lost a lot of things when he'd taken his own path.

He hoped Eddie wouldn't have lost so much too, but didn't feel all that worried about it because it seemed like he'd be just fine, like he had a lot of friends to back him up. And a very important one of them with him in the here and now.

"I'm not done yet," Sirius said with a smile, even as he moved to work on some shelves. "So you've got some time. Tell me about your Losers."

Eddie couldn't help but smile when Sirius brought up his friends. They were his family. Occasionally he believed they were more of a family to him than his own mother. Of course, he immediately felt guilty whenever that thought crossed his mind. His mother did so much for him. She loved him so much... but her love was suffocating. It wasn't like his friends.

"I love them." He said simply. It was true. He loved each and every one of them in an intense sort of way. He often wondered if everyone loved their friends like that or, maybe, they were just a special group. Maybe they loved each other so much because no one else loved them. "They're... It's like, when I'm with them, I feel..." How did he explain it? "Well. I can forget that I'm not or that there are things I can't do because, when I'm with them, I feel like I can." Maybe that wasn't the best explanation but, for a kid like Eddie, it meant a lot.

"I wish they were here. You'd like them. All of them. Bill's our leader." And Bill was great. He was somewhere close to being the best. Eddie loved him. Just not as much as he loved Richie. The same could be said for any of the Losers. They were all great in their own way but no one came close to being Richie. Though Stan did come in a close second if only because there were similarities between him and Eddie. "Then there's Stan who has a cute nose and likes birds but doesn't like when I tease him. Richie, of course. Ben, who found and fixed up our clubhouse and hung the hammock Richie and I fight over, Mike is homeschooled but he knows a lot about nature and Bill seems to really like having him around. He hasn't been hanging out with us as long as the others. I don't think he really considers himself a part of the group but he is. And then Beverly is the only girl. Richie's best friend who Ben has a crush on. She has a crush on Bill but that's..." He shrugged his shoulders as if that was no big deal really. "Everyone has or had a crush on Bill once. Anyway, Bev's probably the bravest out of all of us and has the best aim. She hit Henry Bowers in the head with a rock during the rock war."

It was just a short little description of most of them. He wasn't about to talk about Richie because he wouldn't actually know when to stop. Not with Sirius encouraging him to talk and telling him it was okay to feel certain things. He had a little less of a filter with the other.
