Snape's Wand

We don't know anything about Snape's wand. What sort of wood? The core and length? For info on known wands for comparison, here is a link to the Lexicon wand page.
  • Random comment but if the wand chooses the wizard, would Snape be able to be thinking of a certain type of wand or would whatever fit be what he got stuck with?
    • this is where we pretend i didn't just comment with a rp journal

I agree with this. The wand is based around the wizard's abilities. Ron's first wand is not as good a fit for him as his second one, which is more suited to his magic. I think it's that each person's magic is different, they will be talented more at certain kinds of magic than others, and the wand is a means of focus - the kind of wood/core that is most effective will be that which their personal magic is most suited to. The sorting hat would take into account his more refined desires, like the desire to be in Slytherin. The wands don't function in the same way, Harry isn't asked what kind of things he wants for himself or the kind of magic he wants to excel at, the wand simply shows that it is very reactive to him. I don't think that any of Severus' opinion would be a deciding factor in the wand, it is chosen purely on physical/magical reactivity.
    • I don't think his conscious opinions would matter, but his innate desire to be allied with a strong tradition with a lot of history would. So he might wind up with a wand made of teak, which has been imported to the UK for a long time and is part of their traditions by now, but would not be likely to get a wand made of mimosa or purpleheart or koa, because those wouldn't (directly) connect to the traditions he desperately wanted to be a part of.

I suspect his desire to associate himself with pureblood wizardry would give him an affinity for the kinds of wands historically used in the UK.

I think it more likely that he would have a traditionally 'english' wood wand precisely because it was made by Ollivander. In other words, I tend to doubt that Ollivander was using imported woods to make wands. Do we have any example of an Ollivander-made wand that was made of an imported wood?

For instance - while Bella, Lucius and Draco's wands ARE traditionally 'english' woods (walnut, elm, hawthorn), so are all the other wands made by Ollivander and listed on the lexicon page. I'm under the impression that even Krum's is a traditonally 'english' wood (hornbeam) tho' I could be wrong about that. I do think Fleur's was an imported wood, since I tend to associate rosewood with the orient, but I do not know enough about it to be certain it isn't grown in Europe as well. -- Hwyla
        • James's was Mahogany and that isn't very English.
        • Rosewoods grow in Africa and South America (various different kinds, unless some have been transplanted from one place to another.) They need hot, humid places with rich soil and bugs the size of rabbits. It's imported all over the world, and has been for a long time because it travels well and is (or was, before the last 60 years when massive industry changed things) easy to find in its native lands.

The extreme density and the oils that give it the rich colors are part of its protection against bugs. (Which is why you normally don't see eating utensils--salad bowls or wooden spoons--made of rosewood. Not because it's too expensive, because in some cases, no expense is too much. It's that any natural oils that are too toxic for Amazonian river bugs are not ones you want to put into your body.)

Do we know for certain Snape's wand is from Ollivander? Hagrid says he's the "only place fer wands, Ollivanders, and yeh gotta have the best wand," but that doesn't mean he's literally the only one. (Nor that Hagrid was right about him being best.)
          • We know there were other wandmakers accessible to British wizards, as the first years in HBP and DH managed to get theirs while Ollivander was in the Malfoy basement (and we know not to take anything Hagrid says literally). Ollivander was Dumbledore's favorite wandmaker (Dumbledore gave him 2 of Fawkes' feathers, Dumbledore invited Ollivander to test the wands of the Triwizard Champions), and it seems Voldemort thought he was the most qualified to explain the 'Priori Incantatem' and how to get around it (well, he was the maker of those twin wands) but we don't know what Eileen thought of him.
