Did Severus attend Muggle school?

Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
Hello, everyone!

I would like to get your opinions on whether Severus attended a Muggle school before going to Hogwarts or was he home-schooled (by his mother)? Or perhaps he mainly taught himself?

Everyone attends Hogwarts at age 11 or 12. By this age, students know how to read and write, etc. Given that Severus is a half-blood and resided in a Muggle town, do you think he went to Muggle school? If so, he should've met Lily there and need not introduce himself in the playground (it is possible, of course, that their town has more than one school and they went to different ones). He seems to be totally into his wizarding roots that he dislikes anything Muggle. His mother could've taught him the basics (along with his quite extensive knowledge of magic, etc.). On the other hand, he seems to be very neglected so I'm not very convinced that his mother or father spent a lot of time with him (besides Tobias not liking anything much as he put it)....

I'm very interested to hear your take on this.
  • You know, I was going to comment that I didn't see Lily as going to a private school, but the idea is definitely growing on me. I don't see the Evans' as rich, precisely (although as you say, definitely better off than the Snapes who lived on the dodgy council estate in the arse-end of their town) - maybe they scrimped and saved to meet the school fees, wanting their kids to get a good education, and in Petunia this translated into an obsession with keeping up appearances, as she was uncomfortably aware of not being so well off as some of her classmates.

But yes, I don't think they could have gone to the same school. If you believe JKR, Eileen would have been brought up in a tradition of homeschooling - but maybeTobias would have insisted on his son going to a proper school, where he was bullied and ostracised for being such a weirdo with funny clothes. I don't expect the teachers liked him either, as he would have been scornful of science lessons and other Muggle stuff, and was probably years ahead of the other kids by virtue of his own reading (although in rather different subjects than they taught).

Oh, and he was always crap at games, mostly because he didn't want to be there.
    • Yep, the Petunia thing is what absolutely nails it. Oh and the idea that the Evans' were so proud of Lily being special.

Oh, and he was always crap at games, mostly because he didn't want to be there.

      Without a doubt.
    • Oh, I vaguely recall JKR's homeschooling information. Thanks for reminding me.

It's possible that Lily went to an independent (private) school. But yes, I do see both her parents working hard to be able to do so (costs at least $5,000/year nowadays for day school only). And as she's described as intelligent, there could have been some sort of assistance for her by the school bursar. It's interesting if she did, I read in the Daily Mirror that only around 7% of British kids go to an independent school for their primary and secondary education. Of course, this is based current statistics but it does give an impression that most do not.

I can see the young Severus as being a 'hostile' student unless they were teaching him stuff that was interesting to him. And I can't imagine him wanting to be there, either. Of course, he would have felt awkward wearing those clothes, too. He seems so independent to me even at a young age - so he strikes me as 'not a team player', at least not with the Muggle ones so yes, I agree--he was always crappy at games.
