"Well." Snape looked the skinny young man up and down. His uniform was grubby and frayed at the cuffs, his nails were ragged, and if his jaw motions were a guide, he was either enjoying a large chunk of flavored gum or chewing his cud. "I see I have my work cut out for me."

"Why's that?" Shunpike blew a purplish bubble. "I deal with the public every day, don't I? You think they'd send me on the Knight Bus if - "

Snape forced down the urge to turn Shunpike into a garden slug. "We have standards, young man."

“What a beautiful day!” Pomona wiped a smudged hand across her brow as she gazed around her.

Severus slipped a handful of delicate plants into his collection bag and walked over to stand beside her. The two of them gazed contentedly down the verdant hillside at the distant castle gleaming in the afternoon sun.

Pomona pulled a flask from her pocket, took a swig, and held it out to her companion with a smile. “I’m ready for a break. How about you, Severus?”

Taking the flask, he swallowed some of the contents with a sigh of satisfaction. “My thoughts exactly.”
