Character A fought bravely in WW1, in fact he received a few medals for his bravery and even made it to the rank of sergeant. Unfortunately none of that mattered when he got home to Ireland. He came back to a country that was still at war with its mother country. The streets of Belfast were often as explosive as the battlefields and legitimate work was awfully hard to come by--which is why he said when the IRA came calling asking for his expertise despite his fighting for the English crown during WW1 he rose up the ranks quickly well liked, and well feared. No one knows about the nightmares though, no one knows it takes opium to put him to sleep most nights, that his hands shook without whiskey, because his hands never shook when he was holding a gun or making a bomb.
Character B could be a friend from when he was young, someone who served with him, a cop who knew him in the war, a diehard IRA man that doesn't trust a war-vet. I am totally open
Character A was the second son born to a wealthy estate in England. He comes from a house of maids, butlers, and valets. Since he was a child he had someone to hold his jacket while he put it on. He joined the army during WW1 because it was the noble thing to do. He was promoted for his last name more than anything. When he came home he was suddenly the heir, his older brother had died in the war, and Character A left a piece of himself there as well, particularly a chunk of his right thigh and most of the vision in both of his eyes. He was never taught to be the oldest son, to do business, know the estate, handle the money, he's overwhelmed more than anything.
Character B would LOVE for this character to be a war buddy who needs a job who is hired as his new valet despite having no experience.
