Who: Narcissa Malfoy and Lily Evans
Where: A deserted alley. Yes I can do cliche ;p
What: she's just arrived!
When: Wednesday Evening
Rating: PG
Status: Complete

Narcissa had been heading to dinner when she ended up somewhere else. Somewhere she didn't recognise at all which, so soon after the war had ended up her on alert. It wasn't just everyday one was transported from their home to a completely new place and not be aware of why or where they were. At least without a decent reason, which she did not have at the moment. The sensible part of her brain said she would have known if someone had managed to get into Malfoy Manor without her knowing with all the extra wards around the Manor. Perhaps Lucius had planned a surprise for her but at the same time, even this wasn't how he would go about it.

So all in all, Narcissa had no idea how she got where she was or where she was for that matter and she didn't like it at all. Her mood wasn't improved either when she tried to apparate home and failed, in fact she just landed back where she was. Which made no sense to her as she hadn't sensed any anti-apparation wards around, it just hadn't worked. Pulling out her wand, which she thankfully had on her person still she cast a simple lumos and discovered that it still worked. That was something at least.

Now all she had to do was find where she was and then find a way home before Lucius and Draco became too worried about her.

Lily knew she wasn't meant to be out after dark, and really, she hadn't meant to be. It was just her knack for losing track of time. She'd already used her mirror to alert Sirius to the fact she was on her way home. She could have apparated, she knew, but she still didn't trust it completely in the confines of this cage. For all she knew, the cage would spontaneously shrink while she was mid-movement and she'd get stuck in some sort of limbo.

It was highly unlikely, she knew, but she found it just as easy to walk and not deal with the worries of it.

When she passed an alley, she paused and cocked her head curiously. Was that --? She frowned a little as she saw what she was fairly certain was a witch with her wand out. "Excuse me," she said gently as she started down the alley. "Have you just arrived?" She asked politely. It was possible the woman had been here a bit and had just ducked into the alley to hide her wand from the Muggles. If that was the case, then Lily would excuse herself and be on her way.

But if the woman was newly arrived ... well, she'd want to help her out.

Narcissa twirled towards the voice keeping her wand drawn in case the other person was to attack her. Though, if it had been Narcissa she would have attacked immediately without asking a question. It was better to be safe than sorry, especially in a new place so soon after the war. The woman, she looked vaguely familiar though Narcissa could not place why, seemed relatively harmless but that wasn't enough to let her drop her guard.

"I have, yes," she replied still training her wand upon the other woman. "Where are we and how do we leave?" she demanded of the woman. It didn't occur to her that the other woman wouldn't be here if she could leave, to her it was the only acceptable solution and therefore she would go through with it.

While Lily wasn't completely comfortable with the woman's wand being pointed at her, especially with the news she was about to deliver, she also trusted she could manage a wandless protego if push came to shove. She had been practicing, after all.

Still, she kept her wand hand up, free and ready, just in case. "We're in New York," she began to explain. "1964. No one knows why we've been brought here, or how, but we can't escape presently. We can't even ... leave the city and some surrounding areas. It's nothing to do with Time turners or apparation gone wrong, or ..." She hesitated. She didn't know this woman, nor which side she might be supporting, so it seemed best not to bring Voldemort into things just yet. "Or anything else from our world.

"We're not the first. A few of my friends are here as well, from our world. Some are closer to my time than not, but there are some from further along the timeline." Lily kept her voice quiet and even, though her focus never left the witch's wand.

Narcissa frowned. That didn't make any sense but then again how she arrived here didn't make sense either. "Why should I believe you? I'm sure there are plenty of people out to get my family and I after the war," she replied cautiously. Though taking a quick glance around from what she could see from her current position, it could very well have been New York. She had been there once, years ago but it wasn't the sort of place you would ever forget.

"This could be some elaborate trap for my actions during the Battle," she replied carefully. She knew her family wasn't liked by either side after her lie so it could be possible. Just unlikely but then not as unlikely as the situation that was being described to her by the other woman. Witch. She said their world so she must be a witch then.

"Suppose you have no reason to, but unless I'm mad, why would I be telling you things like that?" Though Lily guessed the woman could well think she was mad. Why not? "But you can try. Try to apparate out, or even leave the area. You'll see for yourself soon enough. They've got a welcome center set up for ... for people who've fallen through. They only let you stay there a month before you have to move out to your own place, have a job, things like that. It's ... they're helpful about it. Finding people work, I mean. Sometimes you get lucky, too. Gin met someone on the bulletin board who ... well, anyway, that's a tangent."

Lily's brows furrowed when the woman mentioned 'the battle' making it sound as if it should have capital letters. She'd heard about that, of course. Some details; as many as she could stomach and as many as Ginny was willing to tell. "Who are you then?" Lily prompted, wondering if she was going to end up drawing her wand after all and having a duel in the alley. It was silly to think so; the battle wasn't here and this woman had no reason to attack her. Which didn't mean it wouldn't happen, but she'd rather not have to explain any injuries to her flatmates.

Narcissa did have to admit those were excellent points. Plus it was such a convoluted story that there was no way it could be a lie - or at least the woman believed it to be the truth. Though the detail in the story gave it a lot more credibility than a pure lie would, it was just too convoluted to be anything but the truth. No matter how far fetch it was.

"Alright," she said taking a deep breathe. "I suppose I have no reason but to take your word on this." In time she would discover if it was truly the truth or not she supposed, though at the moment she was willing to say that it was. Plus it was better to be safe than to be attacked in the middle of this place. "Narcissa Malfoy," she supplied surprised the woman didn't know who she was, "and you are?"

The name alone triggered a reflex in Lily that almost made her draw her wand. The name had certainly come up in the telling of war stories, and her jaw clenched briefly. It was hard not to react to the name of people who -- in her time -- were highly suspected Death Eaters. Who had been confirmed as such by Ginny.

But ...

She'd saved Harry's life, hadn't she? In a way, for less than altruistic reasons, but the fact remained, didn't it? "Lily Evans," she replied finally to the question. "Harry's mum," she added in case the woman had no idea of her maiden name. Why would she see reason to remember it? They'd barely shared time at school, and what older witch paid any mind to first and second years?

"Suppose now's a good time to mention we all come from ... different points in time. I'm from 1978. Sirius and Remus are from '81. Ginny's here as well, from 2012. Severus is from ... I don't know, exactly. Around my time, I think. A little past it." She tried to recall if there were others, and she knew there were but names and ages were escaping her. Neville, she knew. And Dean. But she thought it could get ridiculous, naming people all night. The ones she'd named though, she thought they might provide some sort of points of reference for the woman. Maybe not though.

Narcissa blinked and took a deep breathe to stop her from reacting to that name. She recognised it of course - who wouldn't recognise the name of the mother of the boy who lived? She would have to have been an idiot not to have. Just another thing to add to this place. Different times too.... Given that it was Evans talking to her though, she supposed that was the proof that she needed. Now she had the name she could vaguely recognise her despite it being years. There had been enough pictures of her after the first war had ended after all.

At least Severus was here. From the names Evans had mentioned, he seemed to be the only one she would consider spending time with. She supposed she would survive though, if there was one thing she could do, it was survive situations she did not like or enjoy.

"Anyone else I would know?" she asked curiously. She hoped that her family was here but given this place, perhaps that was too much to ask for. After that she would get her to show her the welcome center. If she was stuck here she might as well make sure she was comfortable.

"Neville ... Longbottom. Dean Thomas. I don't know that you'd have any cause to know either of them." She'd also heard the name Tonks tossed about, but she hadn't actually seen any sign of this supposed other witch here, so she thought to leave that one alone. Maybe she'd been somehow sucked back or had found a way out or they'd simply not crossed paths. "Neville's older than me. Twenty-seven. Dean's a little younger than me," she continued.

She glanced around, but it was getting darker. "We ... I can take you to the welcome center," she offered. "They can at least give you a place to stay and food and ... get you set up with some Muggle clothes." She felt a little awkward bringing that up. She knew that Malfoys were Pureblood, and from everything Ginny had said, they still were the elitist sort. Merging with Muggles was probably going to be horrific for the woman. But what choice did she have, really? Lily just hated being the messenger.

She recognised Neville's name of course from the Battle but the other name meant nothing to her. So no one she would like to spend time with essentially. Such was life though and Narcissa would make do as well as she could, until more people arrived here who she desired to spend time with. "Of course," she said with a nod to indicate she had at least appreciated the information - even if it wasn't what she had desired for.

Muggle. That made Narcissa cringe slightly but then looking around the place she supposed she had no choice even with how distasteful it was for her. She hoped there was just some stylish Muggle clothing available. If she was to be stuck here and had to blend in she wasn't going to look like she was average, she had a status and image to uphold, even in this place. "Fine," she said with utter distaste in her tone.

It wasn't like she had a choice at the moment. Perhaps in time she could leave the woman, find a way home or at the very least find the local Magical community and intergrate herself into that.

Lily didn't miss the cringe, but she didn't comment on it, either. The situation was what it was and she wasn't in a position to change it. Nor was Narcissa, though she imagined the woman would like to think otherwise.

Tilting her head to the side, Lily turned to start to walk toward the welcome center. "You just missed the unseasonable weather," she offered by way of making conversation. While she couldn't imagine the other witch would care ... it was something to talk about. It wasn't as though that freak snowstorm had written that it was the only unseasonable snowstorm ever; for all Lily know, they'd have one in the middle of every month. "It ... snowed," she explained awkwardly, glancing over to Narcissa before she fixed her eyes forward again.

"That is good," Narcissa nodded. "It was coming up to summer back home," she replied in a neutral tone. Actually she was glad to have decent weather here given she wasn't dressed for anything else - especially snow. "Is it still June here?" she asked, suddenly occurring to her that it might not be the same time.

She hoped it was, that would be one less thing to worry about in all of this.

Lily shook her head. "Late August, here," she admitted. "It was December of '78 for me," she added. "Before I was here, I mean. Nearly Christmas." Which was nearly January which would have made her truly 19 as she was pretending to be here. Then it would have been time for her wedding. A wedding she'd never have, now.

She lapsed into silence for a moment, honestly unsure what else to talk about with Narcissa. "I ... if you had anything else to ask before we got there, I could try to answer your questions," she offered. She'd been through it all, after all, so she knew the drill.

Well that wasn't that bad and a part of her was not surprised by the jump in the month either. None of this place made sense so why would the date stay the same? That would be too neat and tidy compared to everything she had picked up about the place.

"Are there a large amount of Muggles here?" she asked. The list of Wizards and Witches seemed to be rather small so she prayed that the amount of Muggles were small too - she would very much like to avoid them.

"Ah," Lily said, hedging a little. "It's ... it's mostly Muggles. There are a few other magical sorts that fell through, but not our sort. We ... there was a meeting, a couple of weeks ago. I went, but didn't really participate. It was just after Sirius had shown up and I ... he told me ... what happened to me and James. I wasn't really in a good frame of mind just then."

Lily exhaled before glancing almost apologetically to the woman. "You'll have to ... find some sort of Muggle job. I'm ... working as a secretary. Remus is at the library. Sirius found a place to play with cars and bikes, and Gin managed to get something at least close to what she'd been doing at home.

"I'm not sure ..." Lily trailed off before she shrugged helplessly. "I'm sure you'll find something." She was equally sure the woman would find it distasteful, but what really was to be done about it? She'd have to work to afford things -- or marry someone who was willing to pay for her.

Well that sounded horrible and she didn't bother to hide her reaction to that and the bit about the job either. Narcissa did not work and she wouldn't, for all she knew Evans was just having her on to see if she would actually work. Yes, she didn't trust the other woman but that was to be expected considering she didn't know her or agree with many of the things she knew of her.

"We'll see," she murmured under her breath though loud enough for the other woman. Plus even if it was true, she would have at least a month before she had to start working for real and that was surely long enough to find a way home or at the very least find a respectable job for one of her standing. One that actually didn't involve working.

"So where is this place?" she asked looking around them, having no idea where they were.

Well, she would see, and Lily felt the same sort of sympathy she felt for everyone who was displaced, regardless of what role they'd played at home, or whether or not she'd known them. She nodded her agreement to the woman's murmured words before she gestured ahead with one hand.

"It's not ... very far," she assured her. She nearly said they could take a bus, but for the distance it was she didn't think it was worth subjecting Narcissa to the crowd of Muggles that would be on it.

"So ... so when are you from, exactly?" Lily wasn't sure Narcissa had said, or if she was interested in sharing more details to fill the silence on their walk toward the center.

"June 1998," she replied glancing around the area as she walked. It looked a bit like the New York she could remember seeing when she was a teenager, the differences were noticeable though. Then again, she had only really stayed in the Magical area of the city, not venturing out to the Muggle section. After all her family would have sooner died than have done that.

Narcissa had no idea what else to say, not that she really wanted to spill her entire life story to Evans. They weren't friends and it was none of her business. Instead she just walked next to her in silence.

Lily nodded, but since Narcissa didn't seem inclined to converse -- and she didn't blame her, really -- she'd join in the silence as well. She was glad it wasn't far, because she'd never dealt well with uncomfortable silences and this one was headed that way.

She decided she'd tell the others once she got back to the flat, though beyond that ... she wasn't going to broadcast it. She was sure Narcissa would use the boards if she wanted to contact anyone else, and they could explain everything at the welcome center. So really, Lily felt no compulsion to try to take care of any of that.

Once they had turned onto the street the center was on, she gestured toward it. "That building, there," she said. She assumed Narcissa wouldn't want her company longer than necessary, but she'd wait to ensure she made it in all right all the same.

"Thank you," Narcissa said with a nod of her head. She might not like that woman but it was better than being left alone to find her way her by herself. That would have been disastrous. She could be polite though and at least thank her for going out of her way to direct her to the building she was after. Many people would have just left her to make her own way there - she wasn't delusional about that.

Hopefully this place would allow her some normality in her life, but she wasn't holding her breath given what she had learned so far. All in all, she was glad to have somewhere to stay when it came down to it. She would see how this place fared, though her hopes weren't high for it.

"You're welcome," she replied. "Best of luck," she added sincerely. They were all in the same situation, yes, but some of them were better equipped to handle it than others. Lily had grown up on the Muggle side of things, so she was better set to adapt than someone like Narcissa or Ginny.

Lifting her hand in a wave, she turned to head away toward her flat, pulling out her mirror to let Sirius and Remus know why she was going to be running later than predicted just so they wouldn't worry.

Giving Lily a nod she watched her start to walk away before taking a deep breathe and entering the building. She hoped she could get it sorted out quickly and either home or settled. Either way she didn't want to stay here for a long time.
