Searching [Open to Anyone!]
Who: River Song, open
What: archaeologist at work
When: early evening
Where: downtown
Status & Rating: Open, TBD

Arriving someplace new was nothing out of the ordinary for River Song. It wasn't her preferred method of travel, of course, but sometimes she was needed in places she had neither the inclination nor means to travel to. Her vortex manipulator was functional enough, but it was no TARDIS. And not even the TARDIS was completely dependable.

New York City was one of those places so unique to the universe that it took less than a second for River to identify her geographical location. Being an archaeologist as well as a time traveler, it took less than a minute to pinpoint the decade. And that was when the doubts had started creeping in.

There was one constant in her life, one that she sought out at every encounter, and so she left him a note that had caught his eye. Young him. Quite young, in fact. She knew all the Doctor's faces, but not the order in which they went.

Still, knowing that the Doctor was here, no matter which version of him it was, settled things. She would find him, and spend as much time as she could helping him with whatever the current situation was. It was what she did, after all. Until then, the archaeologist in her wanted to have a good look around.

River turned, a smile broadening on her face. "Oh, so I'm going to be a professor someday?" she said, cheekily. As if she had any other tone. She gave the woman a looking over, and automatically reached for her diary.

"Not sure at the moment, but I've got a feeling things will sort themselves out soon." First impressions were important, even if if was only first one one side, and so far, she liked this hot-headed ginger. River tipped her a wink.

Donna looked at the woman like she was stupid. "Don't start with all that rubbish again, Professor. You know very well-" Donna sighed. Back to front, that's what Amy had said. "Do you know who I am, this time? Last time you didn't know me personally, but you knew who I was. Donna Noble."

"Well, come on then. TARDIS is this way- or it was this morning when I'd left. I assume that's what you're wandering around looking for? You're lucky- I had to wait a bloody month 'til he showed up."

The smile immediately faded. "Donna Noble," River repeated, surprise blooming in her eyes. "Yes. I do know of you." The smile returned, but this time it held sadness. "I knew I liked you."

Then she tossed her hair and laughed. "Never on time, is he? For all the bragging, and all the Time Lord this and that, he still manages to never be on time."

Being in time was a different story altogether. And the Doctor was always just in time.

"Never one to turn down some directions. But New York City, 1960s? Always a brilliant place to explore. Seems a bit different from the last time I was here."

There was the sadness again. Why the hell did this woman look sad when she heard Donna's name? "Right. What's that all about then? How come you look sad when you recognize me but Amy's never even heard of me?"

She smirked a bit. "That's true. Such an ego on him, but no sense of timing or direction."

"1964. Last time you were here in 1969, right? Amy said that's when she was here. Nice girl, her. Doesn't take any of his bollocks, which is something he needs. Pity her husband hasn't turned up yet." Besides which, this wasn't 1964 as it should have been. But she was sure the woman would figure that out. She wasn't stupid- the Doctor couldn't stand stupid people. In fact, she seemed more than a match for him. Donna just wished she made sense.

River only shrugged. "Spoilers, Donna." She smiled again at the mention of Amy. "Ah, yes. Amy's very good for him. Rory too, but..." She frowned just a bit, then shook her head. "I wouldn't worry about that. Rory would rip his way from one end of the galaxy to the next to get to Amy. He's a good man."

Still, she couldn't stop looking around. Not just up or down, but at dozens of other clues. Water pipes and sewer caps. The shapes of the buildings. The newspapers. "The Daily Bugle?" she read. "What happened to the New York Post? The Daily News? The New York Times?"

Her face never registered confusion. Thoughtfulness, maybe. Then excitement. "This ought to be good," she said, smirking again.

Bloody well fuck your spoilers, River Song, you rubbish talking cow!, Donna thought, but instead took a deep breath and rolled her eyes. "Whatever. Amy Pond, Amy Pond, good old bloody Amy Pond who's just sooo fantastic that she's never even heard of me, unlike you who can't even make a face that doesn't look like someone died at the sound of my name!" Donna was a bit snippy, alright. It was true. But it was hard enough knowing in the back of your mind that eventually the Doctor moved on- it was even harder to meet your replacement who'd never heard of you, and to have his next regeniwhatsit never even return your bulletin notices. For Christ's sake, she's even a ginger! Couldn't have gotten himself another blonde or something?

She took another deep breath and sent a tense smile River's way. "Right, the Bugle and also The Daily Planet. This isn't the intended 1964- people from all over time and space have been pulled out of their proper timelines and ended up here- none of us can leave and no one knows why."

After a beat, Riven laughed gently. "Oh, Donna," she said, eyes twinkling. "I very much like you. Think about it for a moment. How often did the Doctor speak to you about his previous companions? Who they were, what happened to them? Over all his life, all his regenerations? Everything dies. Everyone, eventually. Sooner or later. Any nobody knows it like the Doctor." She put a hand on Donna's arm, her smile warming. "But I think all the suns in all the worlds would go dark if he ever, for even a moment, accepted it."

She slid her hands casually into her pockets looking back at the city around them. "You were good for him, too. More than you know. In a way, for just a while, you were the most important woman in all the universe. Just because of who you are. Just by being you." Her eyes shifted, returning to look at Donna. "You don't want to spoil that for yourself, now, do you?"

As far as what was going on with New York, River nodded and absorbed the information. No answers, not yet, but the differences were cataloging themselves in her mind. "Anyone notable?" she asked. Knocking on doors to find the excitement was bloody boring, but knowing there was a mystery around had sharpened her interest considerably.

"I heard way too much about Rose and Martha and Sarah Jane and Mickey to satisfy me, Professor." She scowled, knowing that River was right. Even if he'd told her about them- there were others. "Well, fine. It's still ridiculous."

Her face softened at the hand on her arm and River's reassuring words. "It's just difficult. I mean, apparently he- Amy's Doctor, that is- has been in town since shortly after she got here, but he didn't even contact me when he knew I was looking for him. Did he forget about me? If I'm so important, why wouldn't he have found me?"

"Well," she said smirking at the final question, "aside from the obvious bits of company I'm sure you're used to, I work at Wayne Enterprises, Stark Industries is downtown, and there's a school for mutants run by a Professor Xavier- all of which are from comic books. There are apparently several types of magic users running about, some which have wands and some that don't. That fit your definition of notable?"
