Who: Martha Jones, Simon Tam, or the (real) doctors!
When: Early Saturday morning
Where: a random intersection
What: helping!
Rating/status: TBD

Martha Jones was not usually up at this hour. Something was rattling her, and it wasn't just the snow. She slipped out of her room in the TARDIS, down the corridor, to the control room, and out the main door, making sure the door clicked shut. She had her key - oh yes, she had her key! - and she set off in the semi-tranquil streets of Manhattan. She'd been having a bad dream, she missed her family, and she felt lost over the fact that she didn't know her own future. It wasn't just getting over the Doctor - he'd made a fair point that day that they'd talked - but it was all the stuff she knew the Doctor wasn't mentioning, and how chummy he seemed with Donna, and all the adventures she never got to have but he'd told her about. She wanted to go home. Home and sit down and not deal with any of ... this. Snow. In August.

What she wanted was highly irrelevant as there was only what she had. New York. 1964. No moon landing. No cell phone. No functioning TARDIS. And a lot of crazy that she had no choice but to bear.

It was nice, the snow, peaceful. Reminded her of home at Christmas. Home. An ocean and several decades away. Maybe a walk hadn't been the best of ideas.

A screech of brakes to her left and the unmistakeable sound of metal on metal caused Martha to come crashing back to reality. Two cars lay in a crumpled heap, the stop light above them flashing yellow in one direction, red in the other. It was silent, for half a second, before all the noise hit her at once; without even processing, she dashed over to the cars to see if there was anyone she could help.

"Someone call 911," she yelled to the empty, falling snow. "Help! Someone!"

She tugged at the door of the first car and a man tumbled out, groaning and holding his bleeding arm. A piece of metal was firmly embedded in. "You're gonna be alright sir," Martha said, ripping off a length of her own shirt. "Don't pull it out. I'm going to tie this around your arm to help the bleeding, then check on the other car."

Had no-one honestly woken with the racket? What time was it anyway!

"Help!" she yelled again, as loud as she could. "Someone! Call 911! Help!"

"I know bit how you feel, my sister Tish got into some trouble a little bit ago with Lazarus ..." Martha trailed off. Sometimes she wondered if they wouldn't have if she'd never encountered the Doctor in the hospital. Or if her mum and dad hadn't fought at Leo's party and she just wanted to get away. Or what if it all had just been one trip, like he promised?

She gave a nervous laugh, "Gosh, it's funny how one thing will just happen and then BOOM, the rest of your life is ... defined. And you wind up in New York 1964 with no way home."

She flicked open her menu. Bacon and sausage links sounded fabulous right about now. And some hash browns. Maybe some waffles too.

He nodded his agreement as he picked up his menu to survey the selection of foods. He had to admit that it was nice to have civilization, even if he was trapped. It would be nicer to have some familiar faces around, though he felt guilty for wishing them here. He was sure that eventually they'd find a way home. Somehow. Someone would work it out.

"Funny," he agreed before he shook his head. He hadn't really thought about it that way, but it was true, wasn't it? He'd addressed the issue at least peripherally, when it was pointed out he was only living for River, and not himself, and he was working on forging his own path.

Well, he had been. Now he was on another path entirely, and he felt completely unprepared for it.

He glanced again to the window, uncertain what the appeal was, or what he thought he'd see there. Shaking his head, he turned his attention to the print.

He looked lost in thought, and Martha didn't want to interrupt, but she was curious - "So, what sort of aliens are there? Where you're from? first ones I ever met were the Judoon. Then we met the cat-people on New-New York. Scariest was the Angels though, if they even count."

Pancakes. Pancakes and bacon. That's what she'd get.

"Oh, and the Face of Boe," she added. "But I think everyone's heard of him!"

Simon shook his head. "Aliens, no. There are no ... I mean, not ..." He frowned. He couldn't even call reavers aliens. Not really. They were people. Or had been, at one point. They'd gone berserk and engaged in mutilation and cannibalism, but they were still ...

"There are ... reavers. But it ... they were people once. They're not really ... aliens. And I've never heard of the Face of Boe," he said, his brow furrowing. "What ... is that, exactly?"

He had a feeling even if she did explain it would be one of the many things that was beyond his grasp just then.

Martha frowned, upset at that. "No aliens? How do you survive as just humans?"

She had no idea how to describe the Face of Boe. Other than a giant face. In a bubbling jar. Who died to save a city. She waved a hand, "It's like reavers, maybe. He used to be human, they think. Once upon a time. But he's just a face now. Or was. He died. But reavers? We never came across those."

Simon kind of had to stare because he really had no idea how to answer that one. "The ... same way people here survive without aliens?" He guessed, his brow furrowing. "It ... must be different, where you're from," he concluded.

A slight grin crossed his lips briefly as he tried to imagine 'just a face' and was having trouble coming up with anything remotely resembling a possible visual. He also doubted it was anything like reavers, but he didn't think he was in a position to argue it.

"I ... think they're somewhat unique to our universe. It was a matter of terraforming gone wrong. A chemical introduced to the environment it ..." He shook his head. Thinking about Miranda just brought up thoughts of River, and he didn't want to start worrying all over again about her. "Well, it killed off most of the population of one planet, but the part it didn't kill went ... insane and turned into reavers."

He knew he wasn't explaining it well and he should just give it up as a lost cause, so he shrugged and offered her a little smile.
