Who: Raven/Mystique, open to other mutants
What: The Visit
When: Monday morning
Where: The Xavier-Lensherr School For The Gifted
Rating: TBD
Status: Ongoing

Raven stood once again in the Port Authority bus terminal, newly purchased ticket in hand and butterflies in stomach. "Well," she told herself, "it's bite the bullet time." She handed her ticket to the bus driver and found herself a seat. Once seated, she lay her forehead against the cool glass of the window and closed her eyes, wishing for sleep. She'd spent most of the previous night awake, worrying about what would happen when she arrived at her destination. Unfortunately for her, she didn't have much time to fall asleep on the 10 minute bus ride to Grand Central, but she had better luck on the hour-long train ride to Westchester. After getting off the train, Raven hailed a cab for the rest of the journey, a feeling of nostalgia growing in her as she rode down these familiar roads.

The cab dropped her off outside the mansion's iron gate. A sign on top read 'The Xavier-Lensherr School For The Gifted.' Raven guessed Charles had ordered it made before the events which led him and Erik to part ways, but found it odd that he hadn't taken it down in the two years that had passed. The gate was locked, but easy enough for Raven to climb over. Once she had gone far enough up the gravel driveway to be hidden from the road, she abandoned her blonde disguise and continued on, finally feeling comfortable to be in her own skin, feeling... at home, in a way she hadn't since that day two years ago. With one last shift to flatten her belly, Raven stepped up to the door, took a deep breath, and rang the bell.

He had to admit that he was kind of glad Raven asked him to stay. Just having her here was sort of comforting, in a way he couldn't quite explain. "I'll stick around," he promised, and sat on the edge of her bed. His tail curled nervously around him, and he shoved it out of the way - the stupid thing had a mind of its own sometimes.

"Do you want anything? Are you hungry, thirsty...Mother?" He added that as an afterthought, swallowing the symphony of frogs performing a concerto in his throat. Maybe she didn't even want him to call her that.

Raven smiled, then joined Kurt on the bed. She watched his tail flick around, like Azazel's, but at the same time not. They were both tipped with an arrow-like point, but Azazel's always seemed menacing to Raven, whereas Raven couldn't imagine Kurt being like that. As much as he resembled his father's mutation, Raven was glad to see a kindness in him which she doubted growing up in the Brotherhood could provide. Maybe that's why...

"No, I'm fine... Son," she answered, but could only hold a straight face for half a second afterward. "I'm sorry," she said through a laugh, "that just sounded weird. I think I'll stick with Kurt."

Kurt laughed too - it seemed to relax him a little bit, because it was so genuine. "I think you should stick with Kurt too," he agreed. "My codename is Nightcrawler though. It was also the name I had in the circus." And when he had originally moved to the States and needed a codename at the Institute (of course the students chose their own), he just couldn't see himself giving that one up.

"Are you going to ask the Professor for sure if...I am your son?" he inquired. "Although I don't even need any more confirmation now, really." When the initial shock and fear had worn off, the truth seemed to reveal itself anyway.

Finally relaxing, Raven found herself able to talk to Kurt more freely now. "You know, the codenames were my idea. It's nice to see they've caught on. Mine is Mystique, by the way, so you can call me that, or Raven, or ...Mom, or whatever." That last one still felt weird, though, if Raven was honest, but she could see how happy Kurt was to have her there, and she couldn't take that away from him.

"I don't really need it either. I mean," she placed her hand on top of his, their shades of blue blending together like deep ocean water, "it doesn't get much more obvious." Her gaze lingered on their hands for a moment. A piece of her was still so happy that there was someone else who looked like her, someone she brought into the world, like a gift she gave herself. After a moment's reflection, she looked up at Kurt again, her face turning slightly serious. "I do still need to talk to him, though. It's... it's been a while since I saw him last."

"Mystique?" Kurt smiled a little. "That fits." What with that crazy insane shapeshifting - she could be anyone, at any time. It was intriguing (and somewhat frightening) thought.

He looked down at their hands as well, his other hand slowly moving over to cover her own. The image inducer wasn't on, so his hands were in their usual talon-like state. "What happened?" Kurt meant with the Professor, obviously. "Did you have a fight?"

Raven traced Kurt's ...unusual fingers with her thumb as she considered how she ought to answer. "Not a fight, really. More like a... disagreement. A clash of ideals." She pulled her hand away to run it through her slicked back hair. So far she'd been able to avoid the subject of mutant politics with Kurt, but there was no running from it forever. At some point he would know.

"There was a battle, where the first group of mutants got together and stopped what would have become World War III. But even though we saved their lives, the humans turned against us. Charles believed-- still believes, I suppose-- that mutants can learn to blend in with humanity and eventually be accepted. But Erik, that is to say, Magneto, believed we shouldn't have to change who we are to bow to their fear." Raven watched Kurt's expression carefully to see how he reacted to hearing about this.

"I went with Magneto that day. I... I was sick of hiding. I was sick of pretending I'm not proud of who I am."

"You are in the Brotherhood." It wasn't a question - where Kurt came from (or when, actually) Magneto's group was a terrorist organization fighting for mutant rights, with full intentions to end humanity. Even if they didn't come out and specifically say it.

Sighing, he thought of how to best formulate his answer. "I...I can't say I agree with Magneto's ideals." Or what will eventually become his ideals. But since Magneto was here in the school now, would he stay? Were they changing history by messing with time? Deep questions. "I know that humanity hasn't done much for me - hasn't done much for us," he added, placing his hand on his mother's again. "But I still believe in the Professor's vision. Now that you know, will you..."

He wanted to ask if she would love him anyway. But didn't do it. Maybe because he was afraid she wouldn't, and he desperately wanted her love.

"I am." There was no use denying it. She made a choice that day in Cuba and she would stand by it. "I know he can be harsh, and maybe he wants too much, but for me at the time, I couldn't do it anymore. I couldn't live the way Charles wanted me to."

She squeezed his hand with her own, a silent message of comfort. "Nothing changes," she assured him. "No matter what, you're my son. We might... see things differently, but we all have to make our own choices. Charles understood that. I hope he still does." She turned to face Kurt and cupped his cheek in her free hand. "Whatever you choose, all I want for you is to be proud of who you are."

"I understand..." Well, he could try to. Things were different for Raven than they had been for him (obviously) and he couldn't expect her to automatically share his viewpoints on everything. He also wouldn't count on himself swaying from his own principles either.

Leaning in, the half-demon looked like he was contemplating a hug. "I am proud of who I am," he assured her. And it was true. Kurt had days where he couldn't bear to look in the mirror, sure, but overall he knew he was a good person. "And I just want you to be proud of me too. All I've ever wanted was to know you, my mother."

There was nothing else Raven could say to that. She could only wrap Kurt up in her arms and do her best to cry into her sleeve instead of on his shirt.

Of course Kurt returned the embrace - because he finally got to hug his mother, something he never thought he would be able to do. And...was she crying? She was crying. He was getting a bit choked up himself and there was the potential for him shedding at least one Man Tear.

Because he wished he knew why. Why had she given him up? But the answer was something neither of them would get, at least not right now. He tried not to focus on it, however. "Here..." Smiling a bit, he pulled back only slightly. Just enough to BAMF into the other room for a box of tissues for Raven, then appear back in his original spot .5 seconds later with the offering.

Raven barely had time to react to Kurt's sudden disappearance before he popped back into place. She gladly took a tissue and dabbed at her eyes, chuckling through her tears. "Heh. You even make the same sound as Azazel when you do that." When she had cleared her vision, she lowered her hands into her lap and just looked at Kurt, doing nothing to keep the smile off her face.

"You're amazing, Kurt," she told him truthfully. "And I know I haven't known you for very long, so you can take this however you want, but I am proud of you. I am so proud."

Naturally, that remark caused him to blush! And turn a nice shade of purple because of it. Whoops. "Thank you. You are...pretty amazing too," Kurt said sheepishly, running a hand through his mess of curly hair. He looked thoughtful, remaining quiet for a moment before speaking up.

"What is my father like? Did you...did you ever love him? Or anyone?"

Maybe it was the romantic soul in him, but he still believed in things like the idea of there being a lid for every pot, so to speak, and sweeping someone off their feet.

"Your father is..." Raven paused to think of how exactly she ought to describe Azazel. "He's a powerful man. He's taught me a lot, in the time I've known him. I wouldn't say he's the loving type really, but he's been kind to me, in his own way." His way being not outright shunning her like Emma and not eyeing her greedily like Janos. His way being teaching her martial arts and flexibility. His way being sharing a bed on long hot nights...

"I was hurt by love before, by someone who I thought could accept me for me." She gestured at herself, indicating her natural appearance. "You're young, Kurt. Don't get hurt like I did. I don't want that for you."

"Oh, I..." Well, it was nice to hear that his father wasn't a total asshole. Or something. Kurt hadn't expected a fairytale romance so it wasn't like he was let down by the lack of white picket fence and wedding photos encased in silver frames.

He was remorseful that his mother had been hurt though. "I wouldn't want that for you either," he said honestly. "I am sorry it happened. But I...you don't need to worry. I haven't really dated much or anything." He had never loved, but had never lost either. Both seemed to be a part of life's experiences, however.

"Don't worry," She said, patting him on the knee, "there's plenty of time for that." She crossed her arms behind her head and lay back onto the bed casually. "Your turn. Tell me all about yourself."

Kurt blushed, thinking of Cindy then. She had kissed him even when she knew what he truly looked like, and had seen him in his natural form. It was safe to say that he had quite a crush on her. But he cleared his throat, and focused on Raven's inquiry instead.

"Well, I grew up in the circus as you know," he began. "I was there for most of my life until one of the acrobats suffered a fall during a performance. I tried to save him and that's when I first learned I could teleport. The whole thing sort of confused me so I left then, to try to find answers." He stopped, rubbing the back of his neck. "I found a mob instead, in a small town, and they called me a Child of Satan and tried to kill me. That's when the Professor found me and I returned to the States with him."

He wasn't sure if that was a good story or if she wanted to know specific things, like his favourite colour or that he had a sweet tooth for Twinkies and other snack cakes.

Raven nodded along with Kurt's story. She'd been called things like that, worse than that, even. It was one of the first things she and Azazel had bonded over, now that she thought about it. The curse of looking next-to-normal.

"So how do you like it here?" she asked. "The States, I mean. Or here here, I suppose, too." She remembered watching Hank and the others' reactions upon seeing the mansion for the first time, but she imagined coming from their (relatively) vanilla lives was different than coming from running for your life in the woods of Germany somewhere like Kurt had.

"I like it a lot," he replied immediately, and that was the truth. Kurt didn't even have to think about it much. "There are lots of opportunities here, things I wouldn't get to do in Germany. Like getting my pilot's license." That was definitely something he was proud of. "And it is stressful, yes, but we are also fortunate. It's good to remember that."

Raven rolled onto her stomach and propped herself up on her elbows, legs kicking lazily behind her. "You're a pilot?" she asked excitedly. "You'll have to take me sometime!"

The vibe between them was starting to feel more like one of friends rather than the complicated mess that was mother-to-be and son-from-the-future. It was strange, still, and maybe not where the relationship would logically lead, but Raven found it a relaxing change.

It was still definitely strange. But Kurt wanted to know her, wanted to know his mother because she was already so important to him - perhaps she already had been all along. And being friends with her was certainly better than nothing. "Of course I'll take you, Raven," he promised, chuckling a bit at her enthusiasm. "The X-Jet is still here and...we can always go flying."

A bright smile lit up on Raven's face at the mention of the X-Jet. "They fixed it!" Well of course they'd fix it, she thought to herself, it's Hank's baby. "Can we go now?" She sprung off the bed and grabbed his hand, meaning to pull him along down to the hangar, but she paused long enough to gauge whether he'd agree. He was the one who'd be flying it, after all.

"I...well, yes, they did!" He was glad he hadn't been around for any initial crashing. The X-Jet flew like a dream and Kurt was always glad to have a chance to man the controls.

Grinning, a flash of pointed teeth, he allowed Raven to tug on his hand and he began the trek toward the hanger. "Alright, we'll go now. Just don't jump out or anything. Not without a parachute."
