Something like Normal
Who: Lily, Peggy
What: A day at work
When: Monday
Where: Sterling-Cooper offices
Rating: Low, probably
Status: Complete

While Lily wasn't precisely certain what protocol was in regard to bringing in food, she didn't see the harm in it. That, and she'd wanted a donut, and had some cash to spare, so she'd bought a few boxes to leave in the break room. She intended to leave them anonymously, though she reasoned people would remember the young redhead carrying in the donut boxes. Not that it mattered much to her either way, and if she was breaking some unspoken rule, best to have someone trace it to her and let her know.

After abandoning the donuts to the break room, she wandered over to her desk and plunked down in her seat. As she took the cover off her typewriter, she eased her wand out of her blouse and put the two items together in her drawer. It very nearly undid her to close the drawer and put her wand out of sight, but if she was going to do this, then she was going to have to do it completely.

It was going to be a series of babysteps. Baby step one was leaving the wand in her drawer until lunch. If she was still feeling all right, she'd leave it the rest of the day, but she'd consider it a victory if she could make it until lunch without the presence of her wand against her. Besides that, she had been working on her wandless magic, and soon she wouldn't need her wand -- though she still had every intention of taking it out with her if she ventured anywhere at night. Or alone. Or alone at night. She wasn't stupid, after all.

She reasoned that by the end of the month she'd be comfortable leaving the wand in her drawer all day, and perhaps in a couple months she'd even be comfortable leaving it at home -- though there wasn't a need to. Her drawer was fine, and she could keep an eye on it then. It had occurred to her over the weekend that if any of them broke their wands, they were screwed. It wasn't as though they could pop over to Diagon and buy another one. It put a new perspective on the whole thing, that was certain.

Lily exhaled softly as she rested her hands on her desk. She could do this. She could.

Sorting through the materials in her in-box, Lily sucked on her lower lip and gave some serious consideration to looking into acquiring some hard candy to keep at her desk. It would perhaps save her from gnawing through her lip, which she was likely to do in the early stages of her wand-abandonment project.

As she organized her work (first by priority, and then by familiarity while maintaining priority), Lily glanced around at the others present. She wasn't sure what the general opinion of her was now. She knew she'd been a step away from a zombie on Thursday (aside from her crying jags in the loo, but honestly was she supposed to handle the news of her death without shedding a few tears?), and Friday hadn't been much better -- though she'd been more responsive then. With the weekend of flat-hunting behind them, she was feeling somewhat more normal. Now that she had a plan, determination was taking the place of angst and fear and sorrow. Soon enough, she'd be able to reflect on the idea of her impending demise with ferocity rather than sorrow. She'd fix it.

She inhaled slowly, managed not to make a face at the smoke, and bent to her work. She found she had her lower lip between her teeth more often than not, and after the dozenth time she'd caught herself, she decided to go see if she could track down a pack of Lifesavers or something somewhere before she bit herself bloody.

"That's really nice of you to say. Really nice," A genuine smile appeared on her lips. Why wasn't everyone here this easy to talk to? She had no idea what sort of person Lily was outside of the office and she barely knew her even inside, but talking to her was the least stressful thing she'd done all day.

Impulsively, she decided to take the chance of looking Lily directly in the eye. "We'll start in a moment, but, I'd just like to say... well, if you'd like to eat lunch together sometime, I certainly wouldn't refuse." Peggy tensed a bit, waiting for the potential rejection.

"Well, it's true," Lily assured her. Perhaps they were kindred spirits of a sort, and she wondered where Peggy would have fit, had she gone to Hogwarts. She didn't know enough yet, but it was an interesting thought to try to sort them all into houses.

"That sounds lovely," she agreed. "Perhaps this Friday then? Unless you've something conflicting with it. My schedule is fairly open." Well, as far as she knew it was. There was every chance James might show up, and then she'd have to beg off but she hoped that would be understandable as far as excuses went. "So whenever's best for you," she concluded with a light smile.

She thought it was a pity she couldn't work exclusively for Peggy, because so far, so good.
