Who: Roger Smith + Cameron.
When: Monday Morning.
Where: Underground.
What: Roger faces one of his biggest fears - The New York Subway.
Rating/status: TBD

The first time Roger had come face to face with the subway, he had been weakened by blood loss and he had been beyond relief when the whole thing had proved to be a trick of his mind. Who could blame him? As long as he could remember, the underground tunnels had been empty, many citizens too afraid to go down and learn what lurked in the darkness. Roger had used this to his advantage, transporting Big O to wherever he needed it through the many tracks crossing the city. Of course, there had been parts not even Roger had dared to explore unless he really had to...

And even then, the areas he explored had been never been like this. People went by, some talking, some engrossed in their newspapers, all of them waiting for the large metal monster to arrive so they could ride it to their many destinations. Roger had recently acquired a map of the subway routes, spending time at his room learning it - ot rather, remembering most of it. This place was so similar to Paradigm City that it both fascinated and worried him. After a lot of thinking he had decided he couldn't just stay away. He had feared it once and was determined not to let it get the best of him again.

Easier said than done.

Roger heard it approach, its loud arrival drowning the voices of the people around him. Has it been this loud that time? Yes, but at least he didn't jump back in fear now. When it stopped and opened its doors, peiople rushed by to get inside. All of them except for Roger, who found himself staring at the doors, wondering if this was a good idea after all.

Roger blinked a couple of times before turning around, the greeting taking him by surprise. When had he stopped being alert at everything around him? Dastun would be laughing at him.

He tried to put on his carefree smile. "Allison," he said. "I never figured you as the kind to take the train."

"I'm trying to get the entire New York experience. Besides, parking is always hard to find downtown, even for my little car. I suppose your big car is even worse."

"You know, we'll have to hurry if we're going to catch the train. Or would you rather go somewhere for a drink or something? How's the negotiating business going for you?"

"Tell me about it," he said. This city was much more traffic heavy than his old home. Getting a parking space was certainly harder.

He looked again at the train, thinking. "Now that you mention it, a drink would be great. If you don't mind being bored by negotiation stories."

"I promise not to bore you with stories about the ballet if you promise not to bore me with stories about negotiations. Deal?"

Cameron smiled up at Roger. "Any suggestions for a place to go or should we just ride the subway and get off somewhere and see what we can discover?"

"You got yourself a deal," he said, holding out his hand.

He smiled back as he thought his answer. He didn't want to risk a meltdown with Allison around. On the other hand, the irrational fear that had taken over him those times hadn't appeared yet. Only his own hesitation.

"Let's have a ride," he said. "I have to get used to all manners of transportation sooner or later, right?"

Cameron reached for Roger's hand. "If we hurry, we can still make this one." She started toward the car door.

"Has it been all work and no play for you? I'm still spending some of my free time exploring the city. Everything is so different from home. What about you?"

Roger followed as fast as the crowd would allow him, making inside just in time. There, that hadn't been so bad, right? Not as comfortable as the Griffon though.

"I've had my share of exploring," Roger admitted. "Knowing the city is part of the job. But I've used some of my spare time for my less known hobbies. Have you find any other interesting places while exploring?"

"Other hobbies? Besides your car? What else do you do?"

Cameron shrugged. "Oh, I'm not much for actually buying things, but I like to window shop and people watch. I found a few nice places to eat, and an old Irish pub, but mostly I've just been seeing the city - all the landmarks and things. Even Central Park during the daytime. I haven't been here that long, and I have all the tourist maps, but its different when you see everything for yourself."

"Oh not much," Roger said. "I read mostly. Sometimes I paint. I'm not very good at it, but I try."

"Maps are great, but nothing like seeing the actual places," Roger agreed.

"Old Irish Pub? I'd love to check it out sometime. And this place does have some great restaurants. Have you been to Lutèce yet."

As much as he missed Norman's cooking, Roger was enjoying himself, getting to try all the culinary wonders this city had to offer.

"Really? That's something I have never tried. I doubt I'd be any good at it, I don't have much artistic ability."

Cameron shrugged. "I've heard of it, but I don't care much for French food. Italian or Greek is my vice of choice. Of course I can't eat that much and keep my dancer's figure, but a little now and then is good."

"What else have you been up to? Anything interesting? That isn't work?"

"You're a dancer. That's a form form of art, right?"

"To be honest, I've never had French food before I got here," he admitted, remembering those haunting words Dastun had taught him. "Perhaps is the reason I've been enjoying it so much." He nodded as she talked about having to keep her figure.

"Not much. Besides the painting and sleeping in late, I've been keeping a low profile." He shurgged. "To be honest, I've never been one to go out and be sociable unless it was for work. Then again, there weren't many fun things to do where I'm from unless you were very wealthy."

Cameron shook her head in a quick negation. "Dancing in the cast means doing things the exact way the choreographer set them down for the show. Exactly the same every time, if you are capable of it. If I were designing the production it would be different, but I don't know if I'm creative enough for that."

"Well this is New York, the city that never sleeps. All sorts of things to do. Where would you like to get off the subway and start exploring?"

"I never thought about it that way," Roger said, then he smiled at her. "Maybe you should give herself a chance to try something new in production. You might even surprise yourself."

He thought about her question as the train stopped and Roger got the chance to read which station they were in. "I seem to remember a couple of places that seemed promising on this area. Let's get off now."

"We'll see. I need to do some supporting roles, and then maybe a starring role first, before I'd even be considered for something like that. Its a long, hard road, and like I said, I don't know if I can be creative enough to actually create a production. That's sort of why I thought I might like to go along on one of your negotiations to see what its all about. From my dancing, I have a good memory for details."

Cameron headed for the subway car door. "I wasn't paying attention." Not the truth; she knew exactly where she was. "Where are we and where did you want to go? Is this a safe part of town?"

"A good memory is always a valuable asset during a negotiation," Roger said. "Mostly you got to understand what each side wants and find a way to give it to them." He wondered if he made it sound easier than it really was. While most negotiations tended to go smoothly, somtimes you found the really dangerous one. And it was not as if he had Big O to solve those now...

"It's pretty safe," he replied. "A few shops and a couple of restaurants. I'm sure we can find something to entertain us."

"I've got the memory." Cameron nodded. "I don't know if I have the right people skills, though. A lot of times the reason people do the things they do are a mystery to me. I'm trying to get better, but it is taking me a lot of work."

"You lead the way, then. Pick us out something interesting and new."

"People can be unpredictable," Roger agreed. "A good negotiator needs to think fast when things don't go as planned." His voice changed slightly as he said this. Roger was a man of many rules and on the few occasions that he was not mentioning one of them in anger and frustration, he spoke of them with a cool, professional tone.

Something on the way way Cameron spoke made him think of Dorothy. He wondered how his old friend was doing.

"Very well then," he said to Cameron, offering her the crook of his arm. "Shall we?"
