Summary: Severus and Harry have finally arrived. *yawn*
A/N: I'm not JK Rowling. This was betaed by the luscious lemondropseven
Harry looked into their bathroom mirror and for once admired his reflection. The robes he wore fit his body perfectly and the colors did his skin tone justice. His frameless glasses made the slight crows feet he was sporting look more like a fashion accessory than a sign of age. And his hair had finally—finally!—been put under control, and at forty-five it was about damn time. He refused to think it was thinning—it was simply a life-long rebellious streak that was at long last being put to rest.
He smiled as Severus came into view, embracing him from behind. "We'll be late if you don't stop admiring yourself."
"Shut up. I actually look respectable today," Harry said, attempting to adjust his tie. "Took long enough."
"Indeed," Severus said, finally taking a good look at their reflection. "You look...very dashing." Severus was silent as he took a moment to stand up straight next to Harry, then put a hand on the small of his back. He examined them—their reflection—as he often did his potion ingredients.
"I believe something I have long-awaited has finally arrived."
"What's that?" Harry asked, trying and failing to notice exactly what Severus was seeing in the mirror.
"Look at us," he commanded, but Harry didn't see anything different. "After all these years, we finally look like two respectable men. Not a poor schoolteacher and a misfortunate boy; not a gangly, ugly curmudgeon and an awkward, yet beautiful, adolescent."
Severus adjusted Harry's tie and smoothed down his own white hair.
"It might have taken twenty years, but I believe we have finally reached our pinnacle." Severus gave a deep sigh and then looked to Harry, and said, "Nowhere to go but down from here."
Harry laughed. Some things would never change. "No, I think you're right. I think we're just hitting our stride."

It was hard to ignore the way people chattered as they entered the room. Harry had always known they were talking about them, but his earlier conversation with Severus had him actually listening to what they were saying.
'Dapper' and 'elegant' were the most repeated words, along with 'gentlemen.' As much as Harry tried not to allow the words to affect him, he couldn't help but notice how all the women—women, not girls—watched them as they crossed the room. Or how men who had shunned them ten years ago now stopped their conversations to greet them as they walked by.
"When did we become respectable?" he asked Severus when they'd finally procured a moment alone.
"Hmm," Severus hummed and took a sip of his champagne. "I've been looking forward to this day for so long, and now that it's here..."
"Yes?"
"I find myself...bored."
Harry hid his smile behind his own glass
"And there was a time when these people...hated us." Just as Severus said this, Lucius Malfoy waved from the furthest corner of the room.
"Case in point," Harry said as they both returned the wave. "Well...what are we going to do?"
Silent, they watched as the men swept the ladies across the dance floor; as the waiters offered people little pastries and men pontificated as though their thoughts were the most important in the world.
"So..." Harry said, not taking his eyes off the other occupants in the room. "You want to go to the broom closet and fuck?"
Severus looked down at him and plainly said, "Yes." As they turned to go, he sighed, "Well, it was nice while it lasted."
