A/N: I need to thank my two wonderful Betas – Abigail and Krishna. I especially need to thank Krishna for help with the title.
Severus had always hated Valentine’s Day, with lovesick fools drooling over each other and all the red and pink everywhere. Although he had tried to temper his disdain for the holiday at the headmaster’s request, he always thought that the celebration of a holiday devoted to something so sappy should be just as illegal as the Unforgivable Curses. Ironically enough, his life had both begun and ended on the one day of the year devoted to love.

Eleven years prior, Severus had returned to his quarters after detention to find the requisite chocolate and wine waiting, along with his lover.
“Happy Valentines, Severus!” greeted Harry.
“In all the time you’ve known me, Potter, how many times have you ever seen me intimate that I hold anything but disgust for this farce of a holiday,” spat Severus.
“You know, Severus, sometimes you make it hard to love you.”
“So why are you still here?” queried Severus turning away from the younger man.
“Because despite your snarky attitude and your automatic defensiveness against anything romantic, I do love you,” said Harry softly as he hugged the older man from behind. “And, I’m determined to make you see that Valentine’s Day, when spent with someone you love, isn’t as bad as you think it to be.”
Severus snorted, before turning to give Harry a gentle kiss. “And just how are you going to do that?”
For the rest of his life, Severus would always remember what Harry did next.
Reaching into his robes, Harry had dropped to one knee. “When Voldemort was finally dead, I felt so adrift. I had fought him from the time I entered the wizarding world and suddenly it seemed that my life had lost its purpose. You helped me see that my life was just beginning and with your help, I regained my purpose… first by helping me find my passion in healing, and then later through the love you showed me. Without you, my life would be meaningless and I want to show you everyday for the rest of our lives just how important you are to me. I love you, Severus Snape. Will you do me the honor of becoming my husband, my partner for life?”
Severus had stood there for what Harry had later told him had ‘felt like an eternity’ before responding. “I cannot claim to even begin to comprehend what someone like you – young, handsome, and with the rest of your life ahead of you – sees in an old, washed up, ex-Death Eater like me. But…” Severus held up a hand to forestall any objections from Harry, “But, I’ll try my best to not make you regret that decision for the rest of our lives.”
One year later, the two had been wed – much to Severus’ consternation – on Valentine’s Day. And so, a day that Severus had always despised was suddenly a day that he joyfully celebrated.
Five years later, Severus had brought Jamie home on Harry’s birthday. The arrival of their son had made their relationship that much stronger. And they continued to celebrate every Valentines Day with more passion and love than they had done the year before. But here he was on his tenth anniversary, his life having come full circle.
“It’s time, Severus,” said Dumbledore softly.
“I don’t think I can do this, Albus,” said Severus, taking a deep breath and closing his eyes against the pain that was threatening to drown him as his heart broke.
“I know it seems that way, my boy, but know that everyone who loves Harry, Jamie, and you are here for you. While your burdens threaten to overwhelm you, let us be your support.”
Swallowing hard as he fought to hold back the tears, Severus turned and walked out of the cottage he’d spent the last ten years in with his family.
Through the haze of grief, Severus was faintly aware of several people giving his shoulders brief squeezes in comfort. But for Severus, who had always hated Valentine’s Day – although never more so than he did right at that moment – there was no comfort to be had. Taking slow, measured steps in an attempt to keep his legs from buckling, Severus made his way to the cemetery where the coffin holding his husband and five-year-old son awaited burial.
