Summary: He had to find a way to be with Severus. Death be damned.
Disclaimer: The Harry Potter world belongs to JKR.
A/N: The tattoo (that I drew on myself with pen and ink - it's not permanent) is an Ouroboros, an ancient symbol of the cycle of life, death, rebirth, and immortality, much like a phoenix. Also, I do not know anything about reincarnation, other than what I quickly researched, so please don't hurt me if I got something wrong. I'm harmless and mean no offense. :)
A/N 2: This was not my original idea for the Revival Fest, but that fic is going to be long, so I'm still working on it.
Reviving Severus from the dead was out of the question - from everything he'd ever read or heard, what's dead should stay dead. And when it doesn't, what comes back isn't the same. It wouldn't be the Severus he knew. The Severus he loved.
So he stopped researching resurrection spells and started looking at reincarnation.
Not surprisingly, every major culture - whether magical or muggle - had legends, beliefs and theories that dealt with being reborn into a new life. The next life. Most had a moral code built into it; what you came back as depended on how well-behaved you were in the previous life.
Those didn't interest him.
But there was a centuries-old text written by an unknown wizard which included a couple of pages with mostly nonsensical scribbles about the love of his life, and how he lost her. In the midst of that was a question with tear smudges in the ink.
"How will I ever find her again?"
In a neat, flowing script, completely different from that which had asked the question, was an answer. The wizards' lover had found him, and together they had found a way for all lovers to be together, regardless of where life and death might take them.
It turned out to be remarkably simple. A tattoo that represented both rebirth and his lost lover, a potion that would put him to sleep permanently, and, like most faith-based, unprovable things in life, an unwavering belief that this would work, and he would be reunited with Severus.
Closing his eyes, he drank.
He slept.
And when he awoke, it was to the sound of Severus calling his name.
