A/N: Setting is Jan 6, 1997, during HPB.
Snape gazed up at the twinkling lights overhead so like that of Albus’ eyes. It was a chilly night--the winds whipping up shards of ice--but Snape didn’t notice. He was too busy contemplating the old man’s demise. People died. That was a fact of life, but most didn’t ask their protegees to perform the evil deed. “Mercy killing” was just a fancy label. In the end, it was still murder.
Twelfth Night.
Feast of the Epiphany.
Snape had come to petition the heavens for a way to circumvent killing his mentor, his only confidant, but he knew deep down he could never escape this horrible destiny. Although people would read their roles reversed, it was Albus who led Snape up to the cliff’s edge, and it was Snape’s job to step off the precipice to his doom.
He wanted to do it privately, have this whole affair finalised without any witnesses, but with his luck, inevitably, something was bound to go wrong. He wished to garner some wisdom from the stars before that happened. Unfortunately, they gave loose no more of their secrets than Albus did.
With a heavy heart, Snape returned to his quarters, colder than ever.
