WHO Lily Evans, Emmeline Vance, Professor Dumbledore
WHAT Order stuff
WHERE Dumbledore's office
WHEN TONIGHT AFTER DINNER

It was with great hesitation and some particularly fluttery butterflies in her stomach that Lily Evans approached the headmaster's office after dinner. She bade her friends goodbye very shortly after the meal began, excusing herself with a stomachache. That wasn't very far from the truth since Lily was nervous about this meeting. She had never been in serious trouble, and therefore had never been called to the Headmaster's office; there was just no explicable reason behind this request, and yet Lily felt as if she had done all the wrong in the world as she walked to the gargoyle that hid the professor's office. Lily rapped on the door leading to the office of the old man with the twinkling blue eyes, and then waited.

"Come in, Lily," Dumbledore's voice echoed beyond the door, where Lily stood waiting. She pushed open the door and as she walked into the office, Lily observed the moving portraits of past Headmasters and Headmistresses, some who sniffed their noses at her most disdainfully. Strewn about the room was a vast collection of magical artifacts unlike anything Lily had ever seen before, and it was only the Headmaster's commanding voice that called her back to attention. "I suppose, Miss Evans, that you have no idea why I called you hear tonight?"

Lily looked, and saw a familiar figure seated in front of Dumbledore's desk. She had seen that person before. Emmeline Vance. "Er--" Lily's gaze shifted from Emmeline to Dumbledore, and Lily felt a sharp sting of annoyance. Had Emmeline gone to Dumbledore and told her of Lily's involvement in this Order? Was he going to stop her? Lily steadfastly ignored Emmeline's gaze. "No, sir. I don't."

It took a few moments before Lily finally made the connection. "Oh!" she stuttered in surprise. Albus Dumbledore was in charge of the Order. Albus Dumbledore? Lily could barely believe it, since she had pegged the Head of the Auror department, or maybe little Barty Crouch's father, for the man in charge. And it was that grandfatherly old man who presided over the school and its inhabitants.

Lily fidgeted on the spot, fingering a lock of her hair nervously before moving forward, closer to the adults before her. Dumbledore's usually-twinkling eyes held an unnatural sternness to them that she'd only ever seen when he first announced the names of the dead following that horrible Death Eater attack. It was rather frightening when he got that hard look in his eyes. Lily held still now, making sure she remained calm. "Yeah. I mean--" She flushed a bright red, very nearly as red as her hair. "I remember."

Dumbledore watched the Head Girl over the rim of his spectacles with a hint of amusement as he watched her make the connection. Lily Evans was an exceptionally bright young woman, and she came to the conclusion quite easily on her own. He pushed his spectacles up his nose slightly and gestured at the chair next to Emmeline. "Come," he invited, "sit."

"Now, Miss Evans," he crossed his fingers in front of him on the desk and spoke slowly and deliberately, but still wearing his same good-natured smile. "what is it that you would like to know about the Order of the Phoenix?"

There was a lot that Lily wanted to know about the Order, like why they hadn't seen the attack coming from miles away and hadn't done a thing to stop it, but that seemed rather impertinent considering this man was letting her into his revolutionary movement, so Lily paused to think before speaking. She shuffled forward and seated herself in the offered chair, clasping her hands in her lap. "Well, sir--Professor," she amended herself, looking him in the eye. "I'm wondering what it is that you've been doing to stop this wizard, and how long you've been working against You-know-who?"

Sharing a look with Albus, Emmeline replied to Lily. "The Order was created in 1972, when it became clear that the disappearances and deaths were related, and not just random occurrences. Albus could tell you more about the beginning of the Order, I wasn't a member yet. I joined almost two years ago."

She remembered her initial reaction, when Fabian had told her about his involvement in a group fighting back against the Death Eaters. He hadn't been a member very long himself when he brought her in, and that was one thing she would always be thankful to him for. She might be bitter about many things, and it might be hard to fight alongside with him now, but she didn't regret joining the Order. She couldn't imagine she ever would. She needed to fight back, to defend what she believed in. As she looked at Lily now, she hoped that the young Head Girl could say the same, a few years down the road.

Dumbledore sat quietly as Emmeline answered a portion of Lily's question. Once she had finished speaking, he cleared his throat and continued with the rest of the answer. "When people think someone holds great power or is capable of great things, it is remarkable what they will him do out of fear, respect, or both. It takes a courageous few to stand against him to show others that he is nothing more than a man, albeit a very charismatic man who is capable of persuading those who are misguided and lost to perform the most unspeakable acts."

He was certain that Lily understood, more or less, what it was that the Order of the Phoenix did, but he continued on to stress the importance of their existence. "We do what we can to gather information to undermine Lord Voldemort's authority, as well as Death Eater operations. Of course, we cannot learn of and prevent all Death Eater attacks and they will have their victories, but this is, unfortunately, a war."
