Paradox knew how to throw a party. After booking the best venue in the city, the pro-mutant organization had spent a significant amount of time, and money, on decorating the location and ensuring that the best food and drinks would be available to those who donated appropriately. Perhaps going slightly overboard, the amount of food and drinks was nearing double their expected attendance; however, the group also knew that people were potentially going to be bringing guests. Along with the vast amount, the quality of the refreshments was far above average. It wasn’t five star, but it was definitely sure to please many different palates. There were various options, from omnivorous to vegetarian to vegan. Paradox did not discriminate against any who would be attending, and wanted to make sure that everyone there would be able to eat their fill. There were even kosher and halal options for any who may be participating of other religious dietary practices. It looked like an explosion of pink, red, and white had gone off both on the main floor of the event and the rooftop extension. The decorations and coloration were tasteful, but there was an overabundance of the colors everywhere. Balloon hearts, streamers, tablecloths, doilies, even some of the drinks and glasses had a pink tint to them. The decorations were kept out of the way, ensuring that traveling through the venue would be as easy as possible, but there was no way that anyone attending would be able to forget that it was an event happening on Valentine’s Day. Many of the lights had also been filled with bulbs that had a pink tint to help set the atmosphere along with the decorations, but there were plenty of lights that had been left alone to make sure that people could see with ease. Paradox had specifically set up the two floors that were reserved to make sure people didn’t have to worry about walking around too much if they didn’t want to. Attendees were able to obtain food and drinks, if they so desired, then wander to whatever it was that they preferred to focus on. On the main floor was the stage in the main event area. The stage was set up for Abstracted’s set with the intent to make removing the instruments as smoothly as possible for the auction to begin. The event area immediately next to the bar and kitchen was reserved for those who would want to sit and eat, as was the same space on the rooftop. A section of the dance floor, approximately a quarter of it, nearest the kitchen, would have tables placed for the speed dating aspect of the night. The silent auction would be held upstairs on the rooftop area. Both the silent auction and the food area would be placed under canopies. While there was no expectation for rain or snow, Paradox wanted to ensure that all people, and items, were properly protected from the elements. There was a large sign next to the stage, as well as at the entrances to the building and to the event area, that stated that those auctioning themselves off for dates were not obligated to do anything but go on the date. Once enough people had made their way into the venue the stage would be opened up for the MC to welcome everyone to the event for the night. “Good evening, New York!” Marina (known by the name Nina Marks for this occasion) gave the crowd her brightest smile. The lights lit up her silver sequined dress, flashing sparkles through the dark. The mic was removed from the stand to allow her to move, and as she stepped away from it, a stagehand in black took it into the wings. “On behalf of the pro-mutant movement and gifted people of the city thank you for coming! And thank you Paradox for providing such a beautiful location!” What her mother called her soulful look that her father could never resist was cast around to those nearest the stage. “All monies raised tonight through the auctions and your generous donations will help further the effort to gain equality and understanding in this great nation. After all, this country was founded on the idea of freedom for everyone, and I am proud to live here.” As she spoke, her long legs took her from one side of the stage to the other. “Washington. Jefferson. Lincoln. Malcolm X. Martin Luther King Jr. And the unnamed masses that stood up for the right to pursue happiness are the footsteps we follow in now. With your help, a lot of determination and maybe just a little bit of luck, all people, gifted or not, will live in harmony.” Marina had spotted the cameraman her agent had hired to stream this over her Instagram and she had turned to face him for that last sentence. It was time to move things to a lighter note. Marina’s body language shifted, a subtle suggestion to the audience that the beat was about to be dropped. “Wow, did I get maudlin or what?” A low laugh rippled through the crowd. “Let’s lighten things up. I hope you have all brought your dancing shoes. Please, welcome to the stage my good friends and amazing musicians,” Marina backed away toward stage left as she held her arm out toward stage right, “Abstracted!” With the band cleared from the stage after playing a mix of the hottest songs, and even a couple love song covers, they were released to mingle with the crowd and the event would allow for a little time for the guests to relax. At the appropriate time, the lights around the stage dimmed slightly, signaling that the auction was about to start, followed by an announcement over the loudspeakers for those who may not have noticed. With that done, attention was turned to the stage as the emcee took their place. During the band’s performance Marina had changed into scarlet colored silk gown that clung to her in all the right ways. The neckline plunged to her sternum and a slit on the left side of the skirt went up to the middle of her hip. It was racy, but it was Dolce and Gabbana. On loan, but it was the height of decadence for her. She sauntered to the middle of the stage, mic in hand. “Are you having a good time?” Marina’s smile was just a little more edgy than before. “If not then let me assure you things are about to get a bit more interesting.” Knowing smiles and chuckles were passed around. “It’s time to get some company, ladies and gentlemen!” She smirked as she pointedly caught the eye of a young man near the stage then gave him a wink. “I’m not suggesting that any of you here can’t get a date on your own. We’re just giving you the opportunity to not worry about hearing No.” Marina struck a pose with her free hand tossed up in the air. “It’s time for the auction!” Good-natured catcalls mingled with the applause. Marina let it work itself out then lowered her hand. “First on the block tonight is….me! Nina Marks!” She gave a graceful twirl that ended with her handing the microphone off to the auctioneer. A lipstick stained kiss was placed to his cheek then she took her place for the spotlight to focus on her. “This docket is for a single date with the lovely Nina Marks. Let the bidding start at…” It was certainly an amusing beginning to what would prove to be a very entertaining segment of the night with the kick off of the skill and date auctions officially underway. |
