Blue Beetle's Enemies, Part the HE IS A CHAR: Carapax the Indestructible Man
so yeah, I'm also skipping Mento and the Hybrid because... well, I just can't pick what to scan.
Be assured, though, that it was a pretty neat Titans team-up, and consider it incentive to search if you're that interested.
sadly, Ted would never get to saving him, and Curt evidently would go on to die in one of Roulette's little metabrawls. Sad, really.
but hey, atleast he was the DCU's first Prometheus.
while Ted cuts back to KORD Industries, Chicago PD Lt. Max Fisher charts Josiah Sledge's boat to Pago Island to follow up on a lead in the death of Dan Garrett.
Except there's rumors the island's haunted.
But we all know there's nothing there except those death robots Jarvis and Ted Kord worked on, wittingly and un- respectively.
And archaeologist Conrad Carapax, who was apparently the Rene Belloq to Dan Garrett's Indiana Jones.
...say, what happened to Conrad, anyways?
the following two're from BB 13... even in the midst of a crossover, Len Wein still found the time to work a subplot in. Amazering.
why yes, he just found Jarvis Kord's evil laboratory of evil.
oh. oh god, that's kinda terrible a fate.
but now, back to BB 15 and Lt. Fisher. surely Carapax couldn't still be around, right?
... oh.
Oh crap.
Sledge takes his crew onto the island with Fisher, so that they can find out who grounded their boat. They split up into groups, but that won't help 'em:
Oh crap, redux.
meanwhile, Ted gets chewed up for the responsibilities he's been ducking via his BB career:
and more subplots come into play: the machinations of Doctor Klaus Cornelius regarding a mysterious compound KORD chemist Jeremiah Duncan developed while working for the former, Murray Takamoto's firing and search for a job, the above-shown fraying of Ted's normal life...
the pressure gets to Ted, and he finally decides to go hunt up Lt. Fisher regarding a girl Melody saw kidnapped (that ties into the whole Hybrid thing... it's not important, don't worry), only to discover he's taken off for Pago Island in his ongoing quest to prove Ted guilty of Dan's murder.
Ted follows him there:
ooh, blood. or ketchup.
it's probably safe to assume captain sledge is among the dead.
also, once again: Conrad is craaaaaaaazy.
Ted goes looking to find out what exactly's going on, meeting up with Fisher in the process...
and, oh yes.... Carapax.
nice job with the secret identity, Ted. especially since Fisher'll go on to, one page later, realize that Ted is the Beetle.
also, nice job helping improve the mobility of the death robot for your crazy uncle, Ted. I'm sure Conrad and the former ship's crew appreciate it.
Fisher and Beetle try everything- their guns, burying Carapax in an avalanche of mad science crap, even setting some found explosives and running.
However, not for nothing has Carapax called himself the Indestructible Man:
and so it's time for Ted to have a Bugfight with Carapax's mechaform:
... shit, Ted, you and your uncle built those things WELL.
realizing, however, that Carapax could easily unground Sledge's boat and make it to the mainland if he chooses:
I love Conrad's NOOOOOO
anyhow, he gets on the Bug, punching through the cockpit window...
so Ted and Fisher duck out, lowering a solid steel wall to block Carapax's progress.
While the robot's smacking the barrier, Ted opens a service hatch.
He and Fisher then use suction cups to navigate out to the outside hull and climb around back to the cockpit, where.. (why did he have the suction cups? Just for this situation, I guess.)
lasers, Ted? nice.
judoing the robot out the window, Ted? NICE.
but alas, Carapax ain't gone.
next time: Overthrow, jai alai player of evil! (we saw him in a bit I didn't post, along with future foe Catalyst...)
