So who was the dial-user?

Is Joker quoting from something in the first panel? Font and diction suggests yes, but I have no idea what it might be.

And those last few panels... I can't see Batman just saying "yes, MURDERING A RANDOM STRANGER is perfectly acceptable, well done laddio!"

That, and if the dial "turns you into a hero for whatever's needed," one would think the bloody thing would make you an EXPLOSIVE-PROOF flying dude, rather than a flying, easily-exploding dude.

I think the font is like that because he's speaking as though he was reading.

The guy chose to become a hero, he chose to sacrifice his life to save others. The dial gave him a superpower, but it didn't make the choice to be a hero for him, that was down to his own admirable choice.

I can see Robbie feeling like shit over what he did, and in come ways it could, I suposse, be viewed as something like conspiracy to arrange another person's death, but if you knew that a firefighter would die saving another person (never mind three innocent victims), would you stop him choosing to go into a burning building? Tough call.

Loving the art on this BTW.

Travers was very, very lucky. The dial produces some REAL STINKERS from time to time. Once upon a time, people could even submit designs for his heroes. That gave us characters like (and I'm not making these up) The Flying Buttress and Candy King.

And that's not what Batman's saying, here. He's saying that Robbie shouldn't feel bad that Travers is dead, since he died a hero and CHOSE to die a hero. Robbie didn't kill him, he chose his own fate and died happy, knowing that he had done so. Robbie feels bad that he's a coward and the subsequent news that someone faced the challenge he failed to devastates him.

Batman, an expert on childhood trauma and death, tries to comfort him and point out that he's already using his powers for good when he didn't have to and that's he's doing good and should be proud of the fact.

There's a bit of Oedipus going on here (in the sense of a self-fulfilling prophesy that comes from the gods, with the role of the gods played by he H for Hero dial.)

I not sure I think that JMS really has the Joker down. This entire issue, the Joker seemed a little off, to me. A little too calm and rational. On the other hand, I guess that's more true to the character for the silver age, rather than the total lunatic he's ended up becoming.

Joker's statement about choosing the battlefield really seems odd to me.

I mean, yeah, it is a great tactical advantage. But hasn't that *always* been Joker's advantage? Hell, that's an advantage nearly every big time rogue has exploited.

Sure, Batman's great at avoiding their traps, but they've almost always had the homecourt advantage. JMS is trying a little too hard to be clever, IMO.

Joker isn't talking about "choosing" the battlefield. He's talking about "controlling" the battlefield. The former occurs before the battle begins. The latter occurs during the battle, and is much harder to do--especially if you haven't chosen the field.

Ugh, I never liked that dial. Who would create a dial and why?

I'll never again be able to see a young blonde woman dressed in purple without thinking, "What the hell are you doing here?"

I think the Joker wouldn't take out the Batman in such a uninspired, pedestrian fashion. Each attempt should be a grand spectacle in front of thousands of witnesses.

This art is awesome. "I'm being rhetorical" would make a great icon -- without the pugly lackey in it, of course. And the Star was hot.

The powers of the dial are potentially far, far more than what we've ever seen, since there are way more than four characters, and if you knew the alien language you might be able to do any number of remarkable things.

Robbie was a polymath genius and even he was only able to translate one word "HERO" (The Silver Age event suggested it was possibly partly because of his desire to FIND a hero to take the place of his deceased father, rather than to BE a hero).

Or if you want to be more straightforward, consider the series that borrows so heavily from the concept it might as well be "Dial H for HERO: The Animated Series" EG "Ben 10".

In that show, the aliens are all sourced by the alien DNA donated to the Omnitrix project from all across the galaxy. Possibly the heroes the dial creates are all derived from heroes from other worlds, filtered through a human's DNA potential.

Yes, I can overthink things, why do you ask? :D

Haven't seen the rest of the issue yet, so I don't know if they're identified as anyone in story, but in my take on this story, the Joker appears to have kidnapped the Hardy Boys AND Nancy Drew to tie up with the bomb, just for the hell of it. (Yes, I'm shallow and a perv, I can live with that :) )

Why's Batman giving him a pass as a child? Didn't Robbie grow up some time ago... there was even a miniseries where he was seeking to reclaim the dial from a series of losers, IIRC.

Depends WHEN this story is set, and to what extent "DIAL H" or whatever the series was called is still in continuity.

1)Brave and the Bold takes place in whatever continuity the writer wants it to, so if JMS wants Robbie to be a kid, still, he's a kid.

2)Batman's giving him a pass because he knows what taking on too much responsibility as a child does to a kid.

They drew him like he was 17 or 18. THey talked about him like he was 8 or 9. I think they were going for somewhere in the early teens.

I think the Joker is quoting himself, in the third person.

Is this Bruce or Dick under the cowl?

I think this would read a lot more like the Joker if a few more quips were thrown into the dialogue and he chuckled a bit. I have absolutely no problem with him having a lucid moment - after all, he may be a maniac, but if he were never anything BUT a maniac, he never would have achieved the stature he currently enjoys - but one of the things that defines the Joker is that he sees life itself as one big joke. This is why he peppers his dialogue with gags and wordplay - it gives his voice a uniquely distinctive flavor. I'm not getting that flavor here.
Also, I have to say, I would probably make the same choice were I in Robbie's shoes. I would probably feel just as guilty about it, but in the end, that's probably the choice I'd make.
