Even so, you can tell that in order to make Peter and MJ's break-up plausible, Marvel had to seriously regress her character, as JMS pretty much tackled and resolved MJ's hang-ups over feeling second best when it came to Peter's life as Spider-Man in ASM #50 volume 2.
This is one of the biggest, if not THE biggest, sticking point in my mind over OMD (at least, it was until all the sexist and racist shenanigans of the actual BND storylines came into play). The male protagonist's new status quo comes at the expense of several female cast members' character development -- not just MJ's, but Aunt May's and arguably Felicia's as well. (And yes, male supporting cast were also affected, but mostly those guys were in limbo, like Harry and Flash.)
