So am I the only one going "WTF, Dini?!" when I see Dick beating up a man he could've just restrained while he went through his files?

Although that version of Damian is pretty tolerable and funny.

re-read the narration. he had to. this guy's a fixer for the Gotham freaks. if batman comes to his office, and a few days later he'shitting the freaks in their cozy new lairs, the rest are going to know the realtor's playing both sides. and gotham ain't kind to rats

but because bats "beat the info out of him" (note the damage looks nasty but is superficial enough that he can have a drink), they'll shrug, since that's the price of business as usual for white-collar guys like penguin, making the realtor "on the level".

its also why Riddler hasn't been really targetted since going straight. the feaks know that while h's 'legit', he's scamming the rich and thumbing his nose at batman. plus, a probable "arkham's agreement" to not take cases that lead o his old buddies

In all fairness though, no one's gonna believe that the guy didn't help Batman, if he shows up later without a single scratch on him. So getting beat up he can at least say that he refused the Bat, when he didn't.

The ending really confused me. So the thing the guy tossed at Batman... short circuited? And Batman roughs him up hard off panel, but somehow the bottle and glass are intact when even the picture frames are broken.

He didn't beat him up to go through the files. He can be seen giving the files out. He got beat up to maintain appearance, like how undercover police in our real world get arrested with the people they are infiltrating.

But he didn't give the files. That's why BatDick beat the tar out of him because the guy refused to.

He's not maintaining appearance at least not for the criminal's specifically he's refusing to break his rule of never interfering with those he sells to.

Yeah, if he got the files I can see a little surgically applied violence to cover his tracks, but this is NOT what I want to see in Batman, it's the sort of thing Azrael might do, not Dick.

it seems to me he decided he wanted Batman to beat him up and take the files. So he went out of his way to annoy him rather than give in, which is dangerous to him or simply say no and then risk Batman tying him up and taking the files but not giving him the out of "I told him no and then he took them."

Because without bruises there's be no evidence to back it up.

That was my impression as well.

But Batman didn't get the files.

really? I got the impression he eventually gave them up and that's why Dick stopped.

If so, fine, but what about that final page suggests to you that Dick left with files?

there's the fact that the guy clear wants to give him the files.

The fact he talks about how if he was unscathed his clients would know. And here is he beaten.

His thoughts talk about bending and bleeding which suggests giving in.

And of course the fact there's no reason for Dick to just leave until he did give them.

If nothing else Dick could take him to the police. Providing hideouts is aiding and abetting.

Ah, I got the other aspect out of it, obviously. I thought by the words (I have kids too), and the thing flipped, that that was the info.

Also, Batman could've just put a tracking device on the guy's car or something. Anything!
