Please don't post PAD
Just a heads up guys, PAD has made it pretty clear that he's not comfortable with our community, and that he's willing to involve the legal department of his employer, to prevent our posting snippets of his work. So no PAD scans, even under flock. While he's been more accepting of our posting older works, he's also made noises about wanting people to ask for his permission before scanning and sharing even small portions of his work.

Let's respect his wishes on this.

ETA: anon commenting is off. IP addresses are (and always have been) logged. Dissent is welcome but trolling, and disrespecting members is not. Keep things civil, guys. To comment you can create an account or log in through open id.

ETA2: apparently IJ treats open id as anon commenting. *sighsighsigh* Anon commenting is on but screened, because I can't mod the comments closely tonight.

The thing I like about [info]scans_daily is that it's *not* just a promotional tool for whatever the comics industry wants shilled, it's about what fans are excited or interested in. So anyone who wants to play "promote only what I want promoted, the way I want it promoted" can just fuck off.

PAD can practice for his whining when X-Factor is inevitably cancelled instead. Not that I think that will have anything to do with that, it's just that the audience for a Jamie Madrox solo book is probably below sustainable levels for a title, and X-Factor's sales have been in a pretty steady dive as people have noticed what they are getting. I'd give it another year, maybe.

Which is rather ironic, when you consider the likelihood of Pad's Young Justice being collected in trade. This community gave that series alot of free promotion.

Dammit, after things cooled down I was going to post some of his rather awesome work on the Captain Marvel book. Ah, well.

Combination of the two. We're going off his previous posts, our conversations with the Davids, and his more recent comments about piracy, the comics business and creator rights. He's still talking about SD and related stuff. It's not an issue he's letting go of any time soon, and it's not one on which he's likely to moderate his opinions. He's yet to come out and say we're dirty pirates who deserve to be thrown into jail. In fact he's said that he doesn't wish us ill. However, he remains convinced that our community does harm.

What he has said is that he might be ok with SD if we asked permission first, and didn't post too much. He's never made clear where the line in the sand is for him. I now think of him as a ticking DMCA time bomb. He wants his content out of our hands, but he doesn't want to outright condemn us and thereby alienate fans even further. It's easier to take the threat out of his hands.

I think this is something we can revisit in the future, but right now is just... asking for trouble.

The whole thing with PAD and the last scans daily really left a bad taste in my outh with regards to PAD.

I mean, as far as he's concerned, we got no right whatsoever to know what a story's about. Covers lie, he's expressed the opinion that we (the consumers) shouldn't be privy and he hijacks his series to just focus on the characters he likes. Captain Marvel was really "Rick Jones and Sidekick" and X-Factor's really "Madrox and friends."

So screw 'em. He ain't getting my money.

I think the only PAD comics I'll read from now on are the Dark Tower comics and that has more to do with Stephen King than him. It's a shame, as he has written some nice stuff, but this whole affair and his attitude has left a sour taste in my mouth.

You know, this is starting to remind me of how certain writers view Fanfiction.net (there are some writers who have fits if fanfiction based on their books appear at FFN - at least one of whom I refuse to buy any more of their novels because of the way they stated their attitude towards the fanfiction at a convention)

There is some beauty to a bunch of people who make time to acquire and read comic books spending that time talking about PAD's stuff (and PAD and the market) -- time that could instead be spent buying comic books, or reading a comic book (however acquired) and deciding whether its sequels or relatives are worth shelling out money for.

I totally respect the wishes of someone who wants to be talked about as a person or as a player in the economy by people who might otherwise see an annotated sample of his work and think: "hm, that overview has convinced me that this might actually be worth supporting".

Indeed, I want to encourage people to spend even more time arguing that PAD's stuff can be good, or funny -- entirely without evidence, mind you, because producing such evidence is against the rule announced here -- especially if it's time they might otherwise spend planning to buy more stuff from which PAD derives income. :-)

Tell me how great you think PAD's stuff is. I really would like to know. Just don't show me. That's not allowed.

Is it PAD who keeps bringing this up, or you?
[info]cylversaber
2009-03-19 01:48 pm UTC (link)
It seems to me PAD's point should be pretty simple for you guys to understand; don't post more than half the pages of a comic, because that's not remotely "fair use." This is something ANY author (yeah, Gail Simone, too) will say. And he's actually being extremely generous in terms of what he IS allowing (go check out his latest post on his site). Yet even weeks after you guys got caught going way beyond fair use, you're still going on whining about it and outright lying about what he said, in order to make him look mean and unreasonable.

Now, I too have done stuff in my lifetime that I knew was wrong or that I could get in trouble for, but I never had the overwhelming nerve and sense of entitlement to attack somebody for catching me in the act! Word of advice; if you keep bringing it up and drawing attention to this issue, you're bound to attract the attention of other people who don't like their work being pirated, and some of them may not be as nice as PAD who did the bare minimum he was obligated to do in giving Marvel a heads-up. Other parties may actually start tracking down individual IP addresses, and filing lawsuits for thousands of dollars. Don't kid yourselves; this is happening every day, to ordinary people just like you. So please grow up, start taking responsibility for your actions, and stop blaming others.

[info]heehaw_tng
2009-03-19 02:10 pm UTC (link)
This was posted in the comments section of his post about scans_daily on his site, and was then re-posted in this week's new comics thread:

"Well, the last time I was over there it was made abundantly clear that I wasn’t welcome, so I’m not going to make the mistake of going over there and saying this. But feel free to post the following in response:

The position espoused is not remotely correct. I have EXPLICITLY said that I have no problem with “snippets.” A few panels here, a page there. Anything that remotely falls under the realm of fair use is of no concern. And the comment about wanting people to consult with me over reproducing “even small portions” of my work is, again, 180 degrees away from what I said.

What I had said was that–giving a for-instance–if people wanted to produce LARGE amounts (such as the 50% that was reproduced of X-Factor) of work to which I own the copyright (such as Fallen Angel) that they but had to approach me and we could likely work something out. Here I was trying to put forward an example of how I’d be willing to work with Scans regarding work where I have the legal option to make that call (unlike that Marvel work) and it’s being twisted and distorted to make me come across as uncooperative. I really can’t fathom it."

Just thought hearing PAD's side might be a good thing. I know you're looking to avoid conflict, [info]schmevil, but might we be going a bit too far by banning "All Peter David?"
