Tales of Suspense

Four scans apiece from Captain America: Reborn #3 and Invincible Iron Man #18.

First off, in Reborn, Steve is still floating around in time.  Meanwhile, the nerd squad races to gather all the pieces of the puzzle:  Reed Richards heads to the North Pole to get Steve's body from Namor (how he knows about that, I'm not sure; maybe Tony told him at some point?  Might make sense post-SI, since Skrull-Pym and Jan were dead).

I quite enjoy Brubaker's Namor, from his brief appearances here and there. He clearly feels tremendously dishonoured by being unable to protect his body against temporal mechanics by engaging it in a fist-fight.

Hank tells Reed about Norman spilling the beans to the public about Sharon.  Sharon wants to turn herself in to save Bucky, but Hank and Natasha say she shouldn't, and that they'll get Bucky back themselves.  Sharon thinks they don't understand how she feels about the prospect of more people dying/whatever because of her.

Falcon raids the Thunderbolts transport taking Bucky to Thunderbolts Mountain, and proceeds to kick the shit out of most of them; Bucky, in the cell, gets a visitor:

Brubaker's doing a great job of integrating all these other characters into the story (he also seems to have appropriated Matt Fraction's caption-cards for them, though he just uses them to supply basic motivations, such as "Eric O'Grady: Regretting being a current Thunderbolt").  Bucky and Sam make their escape.  Hooray!  Except Sharon's gone and turned herself in.  Oops.

Meanwhile, as Steve journeys through time, he ends up in the Kree-Skrull War, and decides to make a tiny little alteration to the timestream to try and escape:

Over in Invincible Iron Man, the climax is finally in sight, and I can honestly say I didn't have any real complaints about this issue in terms of pacing.

First, in my favourite moment, Norman prepares for his upcoming performance:

The techie there is really good at his job, and has been instrumental in locating Stark and his allies in past issues (and now), but he really wishes he wasn't, because he's a holdover from SHIELD and isn't really evil or anything.

Hand is called away to watch as they cut open the remnants of the Crimson Dynamo armour they found at Tony's Russian lab, which turns out to contain Madame Masque.  Pepper, impersonating her, downloads some kind of virus into the computer system and all the armours stored on the Helicarrier (except, I think, the one Norman is wearing).

Is Osborne masturbating? It really is a good thing I've managed to corrupt my love of Iron Man into a jeering hatred or this might bother me.

I think he's just practicing his delivery of that line. I mean, he's fully suited. Anatomy's WAY off there, but it looks like his helmet is glued to his elbow and his hands are clasped behind him.

He should go to Doom for tips on how to master that villanous elocution. As I'm sure Victor has spent many hours perfecting his 'Richards! cry of disgust!

Still not all that sold on the Iron Man storyline, but that nameless techie and his "Gotta do my job... but crap, it's Stark... but Osborn might kill me... but-" is kind of adorable.

I will buy every Marvel book coming out the following week if Tony is totally getting his ass handed to him by Osborne and then gets saved by that guy having a change of heart.

Brubaker's Captain America is the one book that never disappoints me. And that's going back to #1 of the current run. Iron Man on the other hand ...

What suit is this? A new-built Model 1 variant, or an archived one? Because the first thought in my head was 'The Mod1 didn't have palm repulsors.' (or a frowny face: see the M1MarkII 'Golden Avenger' for why.)

Iron Man's collection of armours has been destroyed and rebuilt so many times it's really impossible to say.

True, true. It's just like seeing a P-51 with a jet engine. Everyone knows that belongs on a P-53A. (The prototype for it still exists, by the way... they're rebuilding it, and it may fly again.)

Can I get the Cliff's Notes version?

Oh, the reason Tony spray-painted the Model 1 Mark 1 Grey Armor gold was because it terrified people at the circus. He figured gold was a more heroic looking color.

I wonder if this will lead to a transference of supervillains, like how Kingpin used to be a Spiderman villain before dealing with Daredevil mostly.

Such a shame that they dumbed down Stark during Dark Reign. Of all the heroes, I really think Stark could have at least had a nice battle of wits against Norman before this setup ran dry.

I've wondered if Norman being a little more on-the-ball is a result of not knowing Spider-Man's identity anymore. So even though he still hates Spider-Man, he doesn't have that "my son's best friend" angle to obsess over.

I'm guessing Norman's obsession isn't *just* from the fact he has Tony's old job. It's also the whole "nano-controlling Norman into attacking some Atlanteans" from CIVIL WAR: FRONT LINE. If anyone remembers that revelation was in FRONT LINE #11 (not just Sally Floyd's "Americans use their freedom and liberty for NASCAR and YouTube" speech).

*blink*

You know, I suggested to someone maybe Pepper scalped Madam Masque and impersonated her, but I thought I was kidding.

Also, Steve is being smart, go Steve.

He clearly feels tremendously dishonoured by being unable to protect his body against temporal mechanics by engaging it in a fist-fight.

He so does! It reminds me of Ult Steve getting sad because he couldn't punch Gah Lak Tus.

Also, why on earth a glass coffin? He's not Snow White. I hope. If he gets woken by a kiss I'm going to facepalm with some force.

Actually, given Sharon is 'the constant' I wouldn't put it past some kind of physical contact with the body being required.

I think Tony built an updated Mk1 with the frowny face on purpose.
