Re: Official Warning
Ok, I said I was done replying to this thread, but since people keep piling on a week after it was dead, I guess I have no choice but to respond.
Here's a little secret: it's actually not fun to have to warn or ban people.
But you didn't *have* to. You *chose* to.
I agree with your sentiment: it's not fun. But don't say "have to" as if somebody had a gun held to your head.
The moderators actually do want people to get along, have fun, have exciting debates, and want this place to be where people can rant and rave about comics, make fun of them, enjoy them, and learn about them.
Fair enough.
They are actually not out to get you, or suppress dissenting opinions.
... except for this particular dissenting opinion, which was suppressed.
But when people walk in here and start trying to tell people to shut up or quit whining about the things that concern them? When people make threats or insult each other? That's pissing in the community pool, my friend, and nobody wants to swim in that.
Shut up. Quit whining. You're ugly, and I'm going to spit on your face.
There, now I got the royal flush going.
Which is why we need the community ethos to avoid that kind of crap.
No, you need the ethos so you have some kind of institutional excuse to suppress free speech. Which is what it's being used for in this particular case.
I mean really, do you really want to defend people who make fun or are hateful toward people with disabilities?
Defend the people? No.
Defend their fundamental human right to say whatever the fuck they want, even if I personally disagree with it? Fuck yes.
Would you really want to hang out in a place that condones that?
Yes. I do every single day. Voluntarily. In fact, I pretty much only hang out on Internet sites that assign an extremely high importance to freedom of speech, specifically Slashdot and Fark.
Ableism is real
It's not even a fucking word, except according to Wikipedia. Tell you what, get the word in a dictionary, and I'll start believing it's a real word.
and scans_daily is a better place for not tolerating it
Possibly, but it could not tolerate it *without* censuring speech. Then it could embrace "ableism" *and* free speech at the same time!
just as it is a better place for not making light of rape.
Ditto.

Look, my main complaint here is that you are taking yourself WAY THE FUCK TOO SERIOUSLY. It's a messageboard on the Internet, so just fucking relax and have a good time. I'm sure it's important to *you*, but let's get a sense of perspective: what does this mean to the world at large? Jack dick. You're a moderator on a forum that means jack dick, you're not Grand Emperor of Dune or whatever the fuck inflated opinion you have of yourself.
Posts like this do very little to change my opinion.
The correct way of dealing with trolls is to ignore them, you know, how every other forum on the Internet does.
Of course, I guess the oldest rule of the Internet, or indeed mankind, is the one at play here: the instance somebody gains power over somebody else no matter how trivial or petty, they instantly become a complete asshole.
