If Tresser had started out in the Heinboot expressing a crush on Diana that Diana was aware of but didn't reciprocate, and this was no big deal to anybody, and then three years later he had evolved from a whiny useless git who just needs to be smacked every time he's on panel to an interesting and integral member of the cast who genuinely contributed to the whole Wonder mission effort, leaving any hint of romance totally under the radar until such time as he was actually acting like a contributing adult and a genuine equal of his potential mate, you might have seen me ship Diana/Tom too.

De gustibus...

I personally find Xander/Dawn insanely creepy.

See, I'm incapable of genuinely accepting the retcon; for me, Dawn simply does not exist before the monks conjure her into existence and give Buffy's mom a brain hemorrhage. Dawn did not, in fact, ever relate to Xander like a younger sibling, and Xander did not, in fact, ever babysit for her. I know this to be truth, because I saw four years of show that says otherwise. Ergo, I fail to see the squick.

Actually I fail to see the squick regardless; Xander and Buffy didn't meet until Buffy's sophomore year of high school, so there's absolutely no way that Xander could have had any kind of formative influence on Dawn whatsoever even if she had been around for those seasons. The only thing remotely skeezy about it is the age difference, and three or four years when you're nineteen and twenty-two is just... meh?

Huh, that's a good point. Dawn's existence as well as the age difference. Is it really that small? Weird!

I know, right? I remember someone commenting, when Dawn first showed up, and was driving us all insane with her immaturity and whining, how bizarre it was that she was actually older at the time than Buffy had been way back when she started the Slayer gig.

When I was writing that first comment I started talking about how Buffy was older than me when I started watching and that Dawn was younger than me when she appeared, and then I noticed.. wait.. that's not right! Dawn debuted a year or two older than me, guessing from the US air-date of Buffy vs Dracula. Wow. She was a brat, huh?

How old is Dawn, really, relative to the others? It's always possible she's really on a sliding timeline and the Key is constantly rewriting when she was retroactively born... but still. I thought the difference was like six years.

If every season is definitely a year of plot-time, then it's a little weird:

Season 5: Buffy turns 20. Dawn's age: ???
Season 6: Dawn's 15 as of Buffy: The Musical.
Season 7: Dawn starts high school, making her still at most 15; Buffy's 22.

I'm pretty sure they just say "oh, she's finally going to Sunnydale High because the damn thing has taken three years to be rebuilt. But she's been doing High school already." She's 16/17 during season 7.
