Supergirl and Flamebird:Secret Files

The story Starts with Kara questioning Thara about where she was when her father was killed. Thara says she can't tell her. (because she was playing Flamebird I guess) Thara thinks back to when they were kids on Krypton.

They finally get to the fire falls and Kara wants to show thara the flammable juice inside the blood blooms but the one they find is dead and the juice is dried up. Thara kneels down to pray and Kara goes looking for live blooms but as she reaches for a group the beast from the path returns.

Oh, and Kara joining the science caste totally makes sense, character-wise. SEE! SEE! She was all into science back on Krypton. You know this, because we're making a point to show it . . . after the fact.

I didn't draw that conclusion at first at all. Zor-El was a scientist but he was in the artists guild. It seemed plain that she was just joining the Science Guild to understand her mother. Hell, I think she even apoligized to her father for it in her journal entry.

This story does that, AND it makes Kara just as obnoxiously judgmental toward Thara as Lois is being toward Kara over the death of Lucy (Superwoman) Lane. Kara and Kal are both there when Zor is killed, and have tons more experience (well, Kal does anyway) having superpowers than Thara did at that point, and Thara is also Kara's age, and has no business being 'head of security', and Kara's being unreasonable about accusing Thara of being negligent. This is published after Lois has the same reaction toward Kara who 'killed' Lucy accidentally and only in self defense. I think DC wanted to say "See? Kara's just as bad."

Thara is older than Kara and made a point to say she had worked for the role when we first see her. Its a completely different situation between the unexpected 'death' of a murder and Thara not doing her job then giving no explanation as to why she didn't. The difference is being active and passive.

I thought Thara didn't really age much physically in Kandor, but she's obviously aged mentally. So in the weird world of Kandor, where time was mostly stopped, there was no problem letting her work her way up to head of security.

It's made a point in one of the recent stories (maybe Action Annual?) that Thara got the job through nepotism-by-proxy, as Kara's parents saw her as a replacement. Granted, Thara might think she earned the gig, but there's two sides to every story. I'm not defending Thara here, necessarily; I'm just saying that the insertion of Kara's condemnation seems to work as a balance to the similar attitude of Lois.
