I blame Moonlighting personally. Starry-eyed kids who grew up to be comic book writers are unable to divorce how the real world (actors' careers, men in suits and ratings graphs, etc.) can affect a show, so they blame two characters hooking up for the reason the show lost steam. As for why Moonlighting is apparently the center of the universe in terms of fictional writing...you got me.
