I don't know, it works for me. If somebody says "this Japanese company wants to create a line of toys using your likeness," and you're used to American toys while your familiarity with Japanese culture is almost entirely formal and academic (book signings and treaty negotiations don't lend themselves to a personal understanding of maquettes or karaoke bars), you're probably going to assume "oh, standard action figure, no biggie." It's not like there would have been a "here's a picture of exactly what we're going to churn off the line if you say yes" photo and an explicit translation of the title and price in the original legal request.
Peter and Rachel need a smack upside the head, though. They at least should have known better.
