Marvel Adventures: always appropriate
For Martial Arts Week: the deadly art of Savate!

But Batroc ze Lepair is never down permanently!

Wait, no, there he goes again. He really needs to pay more attention to that shield.

Ze Lepair is a fighter, not a lover, apparently.

Two observations:

1. I really should start buying Marvel Adventures.
2. Someone who's REALLY GOOD at kicking people can hold his own against Spider-Man, Captain America, and Wolverine at the same time?

2. Yes. Apparently.

Well, do note that he's got them in close quarters the first time, with the additional advantage that everyone but Cap is vastly underestimating him, and they've got the crowd of women to try to navigate during the second fight.

Also, he's Batroc. Ze Leaper. ^_^

Indeed. To give the guy credit, with his mere footwork he can keep Steve Rogers on his toes and give him a solid fight. He's being doing so for years. The guy should not be underestimated.

It's Marvel Adventures. Imagine Gail Simone writing comics for pre-teens and you have a pretty good idea about it.

The writing is in kind words nothing special. It's simplified to the point where it's almost spelling everything out loud for the reader. None of the Avengers think about attacking Batroc in pairs (or in the case of Luke Cage, at all), preferring to take turns getting whipped while they make hilarious quips like you would see in "Welcome to Tranquility", "Gen13" or "All-New Atom".

Some time I want someone to try to pick on Batroc because he's "The guy who always loses to Captain America" only for Batroc to COMPLETELY wipe the floor with him and basically go "You zee... EVERYONE losez to Capitane America!"

actual Wolverine quote, regarding a super-prison where all superhuman abilities are neutralized via some kind of field: " "It doesn't matter how big you were on the outside. In here, combat experience is everything. Thugs like Wrecker and Thunderball might throw their weight around, but they'd never even dream of touching the big shots. Guys like Batroc and Kangaroo. Yeah, I know." "

Reminds me of the line in Frasier when he comes back from the movies. It was his Dad's turn to pic the movie and it turns out to have been Jean-Claude Van Damme. Frasier rather acidly notes that he has, at least, learned that "bullets mean nothing to someone who can kick really high!"

I was pretty stunned to see the man act, and the irony that he's playing a version of himself is not lost on me.

I thought it was really very good. Maybe it's the subtitles letting me invest more into it, but I thought it was some really decent acting, plus some hysterically ironic action scenes contrasted with some really gritty violence and menace.

I'm not too surprised actually, I've thought for ages that he's been honestly underused. Alas, I think his accent has been a hinderance to his perceived acting skills because in one of the mad, mad movies where he plays two main roles (Replicant: a serial killer and his government-grown clone!) and one of those roles is almost mute, I kept thinking to myself "no, see, that really was good. I knew it!". That jibes with your mention of subtitling at least.

I'm so glad you reminded me about JCVD! And that I have a recommendation for it now even. Thanks!

See, the "mon capitaine" guarantees that in my head, Batroc is always voiced by John de Lancie, and now I have his voiceover on Van Damme's acting and it's breaking my brain, damn you.

Anyone else notice that when Bartoc hits someone, the sound effect has a little "le" in front of it?

It's like he's so french it bleeds into the nearby reality.

spider-sense goes off, yes.

but when the kick's done by someone right behind you, after you just came down from a leap... even if he leapt, he'd probably still be brushed by it.

(Anonymous)
2009-08-26 11:02 pm UTC (link)
but how does that explain the kick on the wall?

And isn't it supposed to work as like a pre-cognition based on his opponent/threat's movements or actions or position...ie like it reacts so that he lands in such a way (possibly less heavy a landing) so that he's able to chain it together with another quick dodge or something in response to the waiting kick?
